And should we be doing this more or less or is everything just right?

frequently. answered today because it's true in this case, but realistically, maybe more like twice a week

never - light pollution in my part of Belgium is horrendous and seeing 10 stars isn't very inspiring :-(

StanM, Sunday, 20 July 2025 08:52 (three weeks ago)

just lay in the garden and stared at the (overcast) sky about half an hour ago.

It's not something I'm in the habit of doing. The last time was probably exactly 10 years ago, when I lay down in a meadow somewhere while out on a walk, to relieve the sciatic pain I was experiencing at the time.

Ant bites are a legitimate worry.

The RV park that I live in has a bad flea problem--whenever the cat escapes, we always give him a flea pill after we catch him and bring him back in.

Call me a romantic (without regret) but I always think of this song when this idea comes to mind:

probably in my twenties which is well over a decade ago.

I do this on most of my hikes. When I am at the Oregon coast my view of the sky is open, but far more often my view includes the tops of dozens of towering trees, which is just as nice as an open sky in my experience.

Last time I actively skywatched was last October when we went on a road trip and I had my telescope with me, but I wasnt supine per se, I was sitting on a balcony. Light pollution also doesn't lend to good skyviewing here either, whereas I grew up in a small town and frequently spent nights lying on the trampoline looking at all the constellations.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Monday, 21 July 2025 04:04 (three weeks ago)

Haha I would do the same if it wasnt the dead of winter here currently.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 21 July 2025 04:06 (three weeks ago)

I do this whenever possible. Where I live there are international flights the fly past so even if it’s overcast I’ll guess where they departed from.

I feel bad for people in densely populated because city stargazing vs. just about anywhere else is transformative.

Haven't done this in a number of years now, but Mom and I would occasionally go into her back yard at dusk to look for bats.

If you saw one, you had to point at it and say "bat bat bat bat bat" in time to the flapping and swooping.

Hideous Lump, Monday, 21 July 2025 05:43 (three weeks ago)

did this yesterday on west coast of Mull. this morning, i am festooned with ticks.

Last year at my mother in law's place in the Alps we all got on recliners and looked at the sky because it was supposed to be a night with a lot of shooting stars. Some existential dread at wondering how many of those lights up there were satelittes. It's wrong to wish on space hardware.

I’m going to say floating on my back in the quarry looking up at the sky counts, which I did last week.

next poll: daylight sky-gazing vs. stargazing

H.P, Thursday, 31 July 2025 00:48 (two weeks ago)

both are needed

as is watching morning arrive or night arrive from time to time.

i think the reason people don't lie supine on the earth more often is bugs, lack of a comfortable surface, lack of somewhere relatively peaceful. blanket on grass is preferred for me. obviously being somewhere not too crowded is important. most places have suitable parks. we have an elementary school with a big yard within walking distance, but people have kind of turned it into a dog park. i feel like i should find a good 'lying down' park and make a point of visiting it every couple of weeks. it would be a fun and worthwhile project.

i do stare at the sky for nearly twenty minutes every day, but it's out my front window during meditation. not really the same thing. but noticing the beauty of the sky and the clouds is part of both.

the whole dome above you though, that's a special and luxurious experience.
