I Really Need A Pint

This is not a fancy a pint thread as I will not be able to have one.

It is merely an expression of exasperated desire.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm totally with you. Being at work for the next few hours, I wouldn't be able to have one even if I had the $5 to spare. Thank goodness payday is coming soon.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight, I celebrate for you.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"Need A Pint"

Does that mean you have a craving for the taste of beer, the pleasant effects of alcohol or good company & the atmosphere of the pub?

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

In order:

1. Good company and the atmosphere of the pub.
2. It would mean I wasn't here at work.
3. The relaxing effects of alcohol.
4. The refreshing taste of beer.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, does anyone fancy a pint?

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I do, but I

a) have little cash; and
b) need to cook some of my STOCKPILE of sprouts!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Starry I'll swap you beer money for sprouts and we can go to K____'s!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I had my first ever pint of IPA last night.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

What should I drink next O ale-quaffing ilxors. (I am a bored lager-user.)

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry Tom I'm not trying to torment you. Why can't you have a pint? I bet you could if you put your mind to it.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam - Boddingtons, Adnams Broadside, Young's Waggledance, Black Sheep, Moorhouses Pendle Witch, Theakston's Old Peculier, Old Grundy's Trouser...... I could go on.

Oh, and the last one is made up, before you ask.

lol p xx, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Badger 'Champion Ale' is nice. Tesco's have it.

Timothy Taylor's Landlord PA, Kelham Island Pale Rider, Adnams SSB,

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam you made me believe in myself again and I DID have a pint! I will pay for it tomorrow in not-done-work hassle but too bad.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 28 November 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a bottle of Fuller's ESB last night which was very nice although it did not make my headache go away. Thanks for your suggestions - I have a new hobby now!

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I am increasingly of the view that the stronger beers of a brewery's line are the worst, even though they seem to be the ones which get the ale-head love. Fullers are a great example: I like Chiswick and Pride very much, but ESB is nowhere near as good. Similarly Waggledance is no match for the weaker Youngs brews.

I haven't thought this through, fairly obv., but I'm all about the weaker beers these days. (He says, having recently devoured and loved a bottle of that 12% Westvleteren which is impossible to get in this country as far as I can tell).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

do you like Mild, Tim? Wychwood Brewery do a very good Mild called M4.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree. Stronger beers tend to be sweeter and more cloying and therefore harder work (strong IPAs being an honourable exception). Saying that, isn't Waggledance's own particular style of gooeiness more to do with its honey origins than anything else?

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I love mild but one has to darken the doors of dreadful specialist pubs down here to get hold of it.

I have a long-term obsession with tasting Bateman's Dark Mild but I have never yet managed to get hold of it (after many falsely-raised hopes).

Honey beer = morris dancing: OK(ish) for those who like it but nothing to do with me.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the best sort of thing to drink as kind of stepping stone from lager? I am very ignorant of the terminology, but some beers taste more "accessible" than others. Some things I have tried have a real dishwatery taste which I can't imagine getting used to. Would these be the realer ales?

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The Head Of Steam does Highgate Dark, which is a really nice dryish mild. And if you buy enough of it it only costs 79p a pint takeout.

Honey beer is grim and sticky corner of the beer world where I venture not unless it is by mistake.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but the Waggledance Shandy!!!

I second the love of Highgate Dark. Mmm, beautiful. Rick what say you to a team-up on the Highgate Dark bulk purchasing?

Accessible stuff from lager Sam, er smoother things like Caffreys maybe? Sam Smiths Old Brewery, Nut Brown Ale, Wadworths 6X, London Pride?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

although the waggledance shandy is a fine refreshing brew.

HAHAHA MINDMELD ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Waggledance shandy = mentalist Morris dancing involving hitting onesself around the head with a stick.

Sam, I'm not sure it's sane to get into gradations of realness in ales (the realness or otherwise is determined by whether it's a live product or not).

I hate advising people on which beer to drink because it never works out. But if you see Robinson's on anywhere then buy one of those.

(Best advice: get yourself down the Clock House and work your way though the selection, then do the same at the Crystal Palace Tavern, where they serve a tremendous pint of Burton as I recall... NB I've moved back to that area so if you need any help, shout).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

COR!

I must state that after several pints of 6X last night my BRANE was most REFRESHED. Thank god I did not go on to the WHISKEY eh?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

We need to buy 36 pints, Sarah, which I fear is too much even for our combined thirsts. Maybe get some for a buffy fest?

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

AHEM i hope RickyT and S-RAR that you are not thinking of leaving ME out of the combined beery goodness!?!

katie (katie), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ricky T, in what manner of infernal container are these 36 pints delivered?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim I haven't dared go into the Crystal Palace Tavern since its refurbishment. What's it like?

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

With Ktee involved that is a MERE 12 pints each!!! But Tim has a good point. Where on earth wd we STORE the beer?

Ans!!! In our CELLAR!!!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Sam I've been away so long that I didn't even know it was being refurbished. Must hobble up there over the next few days.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You can get them in those poly pin milk container wotsits, but I think that ups the price a bit. Otherwise I assume it's in a wee plastic barrel.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Wee?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, yeah. Not the best word to use that.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Time it's now called the "cpt" I'm afraid. They've done a similar thing to the Uplands down the road as well. But I don't mind that too much because I never liked the look of it anyway.

Trendification of pubs - classic or dud?

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

That post addressed to Father Time Hopkins.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam(e): dud, dud, a thousand times dud. I assume the Clock House is still OK?

Ricky, even setting aside the "wee?" / "don't mind if I do" aspect, how large / heavy is a 36 pint plastic barrel?

If a number of us went in and ordered 36 pints of mild would they give us a discount? I've always wanted to order a table full of beer.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The pints themselves would weigh about 20 kilos which is a bit over 3 stone. Barrel couldn't be more than a few pounds. No clue if you'd get a discount if you drank it in pub. We could always go in and ask.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a long-term obsession with tasting Bateman

I hope I've not done Tim H a disfavour by cutting his post slightly short. It's just that my old friend Tim Bateman drops in here now and then, and I couldn't resist.
