''I don't see how Australia can be an island. It's got Tasmania as well and plenty of other little ones. It's a collection of islands.''

It's kinds of why I posted the q? I saw these def type things coming up.

but also I was thinking abt the bali bombing and how the indonesian police were going to search for the culprits but of course there are so many islands round there (i think the number was a couple of thousand but correct me if I'm totally wrong...but anyway, this is an 'ultimate thread' type scenario if that's the case).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd count Australia as an island (it has water all around it) PLUS all the other smaller islands as individual places too - after all, they have separate names. Which reminds me - I've been to Great Keppel Island and Magnetic Island too.

N cited Sark and Jersey in the same sentence - same difference - or do they just count as "Channel Islands"?

C J (C J), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the whole point. I didn't type 'Channel Islands'. That's also why I went 'hang on' after typing 'Great Britain' and 'New Zealand'.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Australia the country obviously includes Tasmania and probably other offshore islands. But how do you refer to the main landmass alone? It has to be still 'Australia' doesn't it?

The larger of the two main islands of the British Isles would be 'Britain', wouldn't it? (not 'Great Britain' - that's the country).

ooh um. Murano? and the islands that make up Japan, have they been mentioned? The lost island of Atlantis? that tiny one off the coast of Africa that the Spaniards were laying claim to a few months ago? ooh and ALSO there is a submerged volcanic one off Sicily that re-emerges every few centuries or summat (it was in the metro this morning) and they reckon it'll be re-emerging son what with Etna erupting, but i can't tell you the name of it as so many ppl have laid claim to it that it's got loads!

The larger of the two main islands of the British Isles would be 'Britain', wouldn't it? (not 'Great Britain' - that's the country).

To be exact, the country is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. The official short forms of this are 'United Kingdom' or 'Britain' (without the 'Great'). So in fact, 'Britain' is a larger entity that 'Great Britain', as it includes Northern Ireland.

Even 'Great Britain' is not a single island, as it will include all those fiddly little things such as the Isle of Wight, Coll and Anglesey in it.

This is all political nomenclature, though. I expect that geographers might have their own specific name for the main island of the UK (yes, maybe 'Britain'), just as they have 'the British Isles', which of course includes the whole of Ireland.

Also, Denmark: Fyn (Funen), Sjælland (Zealand), Als, Bornholm, Falster, Langeland, Samsø (100% of energy from wind power), Anholt (which, according to legend, still belongs to Denmark only because it was covered by a glass of beer when Halland was ceded to Sweden in the peace negotiations of 1645).

Patagonia??

If it's one's we've been to/been on a boat around, add in Kerrera, various Orkneys (have only been to Mainland, but have been around others on a boat), Bute, and, er, that's about it (can only otherwise think of Skye, Cyprus, Majorca, Mull, Lindisfarne, Ireland and the Isle of Wight, which have been mentioned already). I'm obviously a mainland kind of girl.
