I don't know too much about this person, except I saw her in the one "White Lotus" and, like Glen Powell, she's both pretty and weirdly ubiquitous/talked about a lot, at least to me, considering how little of their works I have seen. But I do recall Sweeney's mom or grandma or something having a party, and people wearing what looked to be MAGA hats, and how Team Sweeney scrambled to say, no no no, that was just a gag, we're not all a bunch of Republicans. And now it's been reported that, pysch, actually she is a registered Republican?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 August 2025 14:08 (two weeks ago)
I actually liked her in Everything Sucks, the short-lived Netflix teen comedy set in the '90s. Otherwise I've only ever seen her in Handmaid's Tale and White Lotus and she was just kinda there in both. Never seen Euphoria, but I guess that was her breakout role.
― better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 August 2025 14:33 (two weeks ago)
I've seen White Lotus (agreed on her not being v memorable there) and Anyone But You, which was deeply mediocre though I wouldn't blame her alone for that.
would be cool if being a republican and signing up as the poster girl for white supremacy* killed her career but I doubt it
*as much as the "EUGENICS!" accusations are a little ott, am I the only one who now primarily associates the phrase "good genes" with Trump?
― rob, Thursday, 7 August 2025 14:52 (two weeks ago)
She’s good in Immaculate. Everyone is being very weird about the politics they want / imagine her to have.
― ShariVari, Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:03 (two weeks ago)
The optics are bad but I really do believe this is exactly what the ad agency thought they were doing:
https://clickhole.com/addressing-the-backlash-american-eagle-is-clarifying-that-their-sydney-sweeney-ad-was-only-intended-to-make-people-masturbate/
― Evan, Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:07 (two weeks ago)
lol of course that was the main concept, but I don't think it's completely off to see the ad reflecting, broadly, a cultural shift. like I'm not suggesting AE was consciously evoking the fact Trump talks about "good genes" all the time, just that it's out there in the atmosphere.
ShariVari: she registered as a Republican in Florida, which moves it out of the imaginary, no? I'm open to this not being even slightly important in the grand scheme of things though, but registering as GOP in Florida in June 2024 is going to rile people up
― rob, Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:14 (two weeks ago)
I do remember that she played up the idea that she was having an affair with her co-star in some romantic comedy in order to get media attention, so I assume everything about this is pretty calculated.
― Iza Duffus Hardy (President Keyes), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:15 (two weeks ago)
I don't know anything about her, but what an awful position to be in. Assuming she's not a terrible person, imagine being made an unwilling MAGA avatar, and the instant backlash that speaking out would entail.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:30 (two weeks ago)
She was very good in the Handmaid's Tale, which is ironic since she's now a Republican (she registered as such in Florida prior to the general election last year). This entire thing is annoying and exhausting and I think there is truth to both sides of the discourse: that the ad is wink-winking at very problematic cultural and political trends, and that the reaction to it is a little overblown, but I'm pretty certain that was the intention behind the ad. At the same time, people stating that 'no one on the left/dems/liberals actually cares about this' is also false. It's possible that she is dumb and doesn't understand any of this, which would explain her being a Republican in the first place. I doubt she is going to make a statement one way or the other.
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:37 (two weeks ago)
Tbh, the first time I saw the ad I thought mostly that it was just an attempt on a new version of the icky Brooke Shields jeans ad, but they chose really poorly in the ad text. At least Sweeney isn't underage in this one.
― better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:37 (two weeks ago)
She was one of the secondary Manson girls in OUATIH.
I saw on Reddit what I believe was a fake screenshot of an Acyn post featuring a clip of Jesse Watters proclaiming that the endgame was Sweeney marrying Barron Trump and creating the ultimate (White) Power Couple.
I couldn't find a real link, but with everything being what it is, it's ridiculously plausible that Fox News would spin this in the direction that would get BT laid.
― Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:38 (two weeks ago)
just an attempt on a new version of the icky Brooke Shields jeans ad
it is that, with added white supremacy sprinkled across the top. in the end this speaks to how people view culture. I understand that there are people who will watch this and not pick up on the implication of talking about 'good genes'; such implications have become more problematic in recent years due to weird shit like pro-natalists, Musk and Trump etc. If AE had rolled out the campaign with more diverse models I don't think it would have raised such a fuss. The fact that they didn't tells me that someone was probably aware of how this could be received.
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 7 August 2025 15:47 (two weeks ago)
I think the fact that Buzzfeed had to go digging around in the voter registration rolls indicates how little she’s been willing to engage with politics to date.
No spoilers but producing, financing and starring in perhaps the most pro-abortion, anti-religious extremism genre film of recent years doesn’t really suggest she’s a MAGA lunatic, but it’s not really anyone’s business when whatever views she may or may not have are kept entirely to herself.

― clemenza, Thursday, 7 August 2025 16:07 (two weeks ago)
When all I saw was the tagline "good jeans," it seemed like mostly a bad pun. When I actually saw the video ad, with the discussion of genetics being passed down etc., I could understand the minor fuss a bit more. It is still a mostly invented controversy though — like 5 percent actual mad leftists and 95 percent right-wing white men taking the opportunity to protect a pretty white lady (while implicitly leering at her the whole time).

When I actually saw the video ad, with the discussion of genetics being passed down etc.,
this is another aspect that is annoying, because obviously genetic traits can be inherited, but even implying that seems to set some people off and cause them to scream 'eugenics'. one wonders how these people function in high school science classes when they study mendelism. Though the unsavory aspect of it is the 'good' part being purely superficial aspects.
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 7 August 2025 16:26 (two weeks ago)
Yeah, I mean you could make the same ad with Zendaya and it wouldn't have the arguable white supremacist undertone but would still be saying "Attractive people are better" in some ways. But also that's an implied message of most advertising and mass entertainment.

Because I have passing interest in entertainment economics, I sometimes think about a quote I heard from Sweeney in an interview from probably around the time Anyone But You came out: the writer was pressing her about how well-off they felt she should be, and Sweeney countered to the effect of (I paraphrase) "I don't really have that much money. I rent a small apartment in suburban LA. I'm on a couple streaming/cable series with limited runs. I've had a few small roles in some big movies and more big roles in small indies. I'm starting to get big roles in some hopefully big movies, and maybe that will pay off."

I first became aware of her from the video for the Rolling Stones' "Angry". I remember wondering if it was a parody of the typical hair metal woman-with-car-or-motorcycle video or if I was just supposed to look at Sydney Sweeney's chest unironically. I bet there are some sad, sexist losers who went through that video frame-by-frame looking for nipple shots.
Well, the joke's on you, losers. There aren't any nipples in that video. They use a mixture of sticky tape and video editing to eliminate stray nipples. I know this because I've also compulsively checked Reddit's Sydney Sweeney subreddit - back when people in the UK were allowed to look at that kind of thing - and no, there are no nipples in that video.
On the one hand I admire her moxie, on the other hand the jeans advert was a terrible, terrible idea. It's not even a clever innuendo - e.g. "Sydney Sweeney has great tracts of land". Furthermore I thought the entire point of Sweeney's brand is that she has a fantastic balcony. Not legs. I have no opinion on Sydney Sweeney's legs. They exist to support her body, but they're basically George Harrison circa 1964. Lots of potential but they aren't Lennon or McCartney.
Jesus Christ all the stuff about... when people say you shouldn't post to the internet when you're drunk on a Sunday evening, that's rubbish. My mind is just as sharp as always. Just as sharp. Like lazor.

"Sydney Sweeney has great tracts of land"
It struck me later on that if American Eagle were really, truly committed to a completely filthy innuendo then they should have cut a deal with the US Navy. That way the slogans could have been "she has a powerful set of steam catapults", or "her stern sponsons require constant maintenance", or "her flight deck is regularly awash with seamen", and if anybody complains the company could simply point out that the captions were referring to USS Nimitz, and that Sweeney's presence in the adverts was purely coincidence.
"She has an impressive freeboard", "her bows can accommodate three shafts", "her former commanding officer was dismissed for failing to follow orders during the midst of the COVID pandemic", "she participated in PAC-EX 15", "for the most part traditional latticework masts were replaced with enclosed superstructures in the 1990s and early 2000s".
The United States isn't good at innuendo. It's a British thing, because we have a mixture of sexual frustration and self-loathing. The United States doesn't have that, or at least it doesn't have self-loathing.
