now w mixed doubles gimmick

johnny crunch, Monday, 18 August 2025 16:35 (six months ago)

I missed that they made mixed doubles really weird, wow

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Tuesday, 19 August 2025 13:32 (six months ago)

such a huge fuck you to actual mixed doubles players. one of the big 4 events of the year turned into an exhibition where top singles players already rolling in cash can have some hits and giggles.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 19 August 2025 14:42 (six months ago)

clearly a fuck you to doubles players (only moreso if/when other majors adopt this) but honestly ppl by and large dont go to tour events to see doubles, doubles is subsidized by singles & this gives fans a chance to see the top players in a quasi real setting w/o paying an arm and a leg

honestly what they shouldve done was dramatically increase the mens and womens double purse per round to offset this a bit and appease doubles specialists.. idk maybe that happened not sure

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 19 August 2025 15:57 (six months ago)

defending champs errani/vavassori cruise into the semis, maybe theyll take down the $ and theres some justice in the world

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 19 August 2025 18:37 (six months ago)

as an aside i didnt get round to posting about it in the general tennis thread but victoria mboko's whole run the other week was certainly something and some of her play vs osaka in the final was astonishing.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 19 August 2025 19:01 (six months ago)

yes! between her and atmane, it's been an interesting lead-up.

andrew m., Tuesday, 19 August 2025 20:28 (six months ago)

other than returning vs iga serve, draper has played terribly this match

johnny crunch, Thursday, 21 August 2025 00:42 (six months ago)

This stuff is a gimmick -- as the one proper doubles pairing won -- but globalised sport is about bums on seats, so its here to stay until ppl get bored.

Kvitova interview. Funny how Osaka is basically on track for a Kvitova like career after her four slam titles.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 21 August 2025 06:32 (six months ago)

another gs final loss for ruud, good for the resume

johnny crunch, Thursday, 21 August 2025 12:00 (six months ago)

early going but a lot of 3-0s on the mens side today

johnny crunch, Sunday, 24 August 2025 22:51 (six months ago)

Ok @ Medvedev. Just feels done.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 25 August 2025 20:07 (five months ago)

lol it is fraught being a Coco Gauff fan. I'm glad she pulled it out, but not a great sign. On the other hand, she also just does this a lot.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 27 August 2025 02:16 (five months ago)

She's reconstructing her serve rn, which is kinda crazy since she won the French Open.

Don't think she'll make a deep run but we'll see..

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 27 August 2025 05:59 (five months ago)

coco will be fine long term.. this tourney i cant really see her getting too deep but last nite ajla was playing pretty dang well also

similar to venus the night before in a way.. it is wildly impressive to get back in that form to take a set off muchova after being off the tour for years and being 45 like that just isnt something that happens

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 August 2025 15:44 (five months ago)

Women's draw is coming on nicely, with Osaka and Rybakina producing some serious form.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 29 August 2025 18:01 (five months ago)

shame for shelton, forced to retire due to a shoulder injury; mannarino advances to the 4th rd

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 August 2025 20:49 (five months ago)

i like mannarino a lot but he is devoid of personality, this on court interview is painful

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 August 2025 20:53 (five months ago)

Shapovalov a set up against Sinner!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 30 August 2025 18:46 (five months ago)

In the end looked like an easy ish win.

Osaka playing Gauff in the next round!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 30 August 2025 21:18 (five months ago)

rough seeing tommy paul absolutely hit a wall in the fifth set last night

kind of amazing that he even got it to a fifth tho, considering he was coming off a previous five-setter and never broke bublik

bublik is pretty fun: big serve, double-faults, drop shots at weird moments, backhand winners down the line. maybe he'll win a set off sinner tomorrow

mookieproof, Sunday, 31 August 2025 20:15 (five months ago)

Loving this Taylor T run but she’s just blown eight match points in a 90min+ second set vs Krejcikova. 13-15 t/b

Michael Jones, Sunday, 31 August 2025 20:55 (five months ago)

tough for townsend, impressive for krejcikova

johnny crunch, Sunday, 31 August 2025 21:52 (five months ago)

And that's that: 16 76 63. Tough loss. I watched the last three points in the very odd 3D tracker thing on the USO website.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 31 August 2025 21:53 (five months ago)

Great to see Osaka back

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 September 2025 20:05 (five months ago)

lol, lmao

mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 September 2025 00:38 (five months ago)

1-1-1 in 1hr 21 minutes my god

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 2 September 2025 00:38 (five months ago)

ffs bublik had won all 50+ of his service games in this tournament before this annihilation

mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 September 2025 00:42 (five months ago)

*kendrick voice* i am a sinner, who's prolly gonna win again, lord forgive me

petey, pablo & mary (m bison), Tuesday, 2 September 2025 00:45 (five months ago)

The Musetti match-up will hopefully be more interesting..

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 2 September 2025 08:29 (five months ago)

I play so much tennis now, I've been slowly working my way back to watching it. Big deal here that Felix won today. Felt like a lot of unforced errors and double-faults, but also that he could pull out a big first serve whenever he wanted to. (Can I love watching a sport without complicated statistics? I think so...)

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 20:22 (five months ago)

I'm convinced, by the way, that Felix's fiance and her sister have been time-travelled in from the "Addicted to Love" video. (Am I allowed to make dumb Clemenza jokes in a tennis thread?)

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 20:50 (five months ago)

Animisova is toe to toe with Swiatek..

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:07 (five months ago)

And she wins the first set!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:12 (five months ago)

She's looking really strong.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:17 (five months ago)

...at least until she immediately gave up a break in the first game of set 2.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:18 (five months ago)

Is there a tennis term for the psychological challenge of maintaining momentum from winning one set into the next one? I feel like I see this all the time, like it's hard not to get a little relaxed, lose a little focus, when you've just come off winning a set.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:19 (five months ago)

Could be quite the story.
Navratilova double-bageled Manuela Maleeva at the USO in '89; the following year Maleeva knocked Martina out, and the year after *that* (or was it '92?) the youngest Maleeva sister (Magdalena) beat Navratilova. Family business.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:23 (five months ago)

You see it in sports all the time, when there is a break -- as it happens between sets -- momentum does seep out...

But in tennis an early break can mean v little xp

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:23 (five months ago)

Animisova has broken back: 2-2

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:36 (five months ago)

And if the glitchy 3D animation is right, a huge net cord to win it!

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:56 (five months ago)

Yep! Good match.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 September 2025 21:58 (five months ago)

xp Michael is there a stream you're watching this on?

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 22:00 (five months ago)

tennis is amazing to me in that sometimes one player will seem utterly dominant and destined to steamroll their opponent, and then five minutes later it's completely gone the other way

sad to see that (american broadcaster) cliff drysdale is retiring after this tournament -- he's still very good at 84 and has a great voice

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 22:32 (five months ago)

Czechs had a rough time in the quarters. Four of them across women and men's and none of them are through.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 4 September 2025 08:22 (five months ago)

this pegula/sabalenka match has been very high quality

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Friday, 5 September 2025 01:03 (five months ago)

Don't know if the comparison scans to me. Djoko still has the timing of the shots, a great serve, the incredible returns and intelligence but he just doesn't have the legs and stamina.

I saw that comment from Dylan and felt like he was bullshitting a bit..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 18:34 (five months ago)

As I say, just getting back into watching tennis, so I'll defer to you on that; but I'd almost guarantee Dylan wasn't.

clemenza, Saturday, 6 September 2025 18:56 (five months ago)

(Also, I think everything you say about Djokovich was implied by what he said--which was that he can stay with those guys for a set or two, but not for an extended match.)

clemenza, Saturday, 6 September 2025 18:58 (five months ago)

Saba already faced two bps in the 1st service game

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:22 (five months ago)

Just holds it. Anisimova firing bullets on that backhand.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:25 (five months ago)

Sabalenka breaks at the first bp lol.

It really is the first target for Anisimova. Win a game in a slam final

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:29 (five months ago)

She has done it! BH and FH DTL for break back!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:33 (five months ago)

anismove being able to dictate to sabalenka is something else

johnny crunch, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:41 (five months ago)

Anisimova is hitting Saba off the court. Three games in a row xp

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:41 (five months ago)

Don't think Sabalenka has the variety needed to throw Anisimova off her game. Not sure she can do anything other than pray.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:43 (five months ago)

Breaks to love lol..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:45 (five months ago)

Saba is serving for the set! Errors flowing from Anisimova, just like a switch has been flipped.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:55 (five months ago)

Saba has the 1st. Just wow @ this. The match is so on what Anisimova does..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 20:56 (five months ago)

Saba breaks with some excellent tennis. In control.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:11 (five months ago)

Anisimova absolutely destroyed Saba's serve: 3-3. But can she be consistent?

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:23 (five months ago)

No, is the answer..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:25 (five months ago)

5-3..one more for Saba

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:29 (five months ago)

Anisimova gets through her serve so Saba has to do it once more.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:33 (five months ago)

Oh dear that smash into the net..one bp

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:37 (five months ago)

Breaks. 5-5, amazing game.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:38 (five months ago)

Solid tb from Saba: 5-1..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:50 (five months ago)

Plenty of CPs

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:50 (five months ago)

And Saba does it..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 6 September 2025 21:52 (five months ago)

This was fun to watch, wish there had been a third set

our beloved RIFF LORD (DJP), Saturday, 6 September 2025 22:01 (five months ago)

Yeah, shame, not really the classic their Wim SF was.

Not crazy about the non-stop celebrity crowds shots--I guess that's been standard for a while now?--but I did find myself reflexively bellowing "That's what the money's for!" every time Jon Hamm was on screen yesterday.

ashe still half-full…

brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 September 2025 18:35 (five months ago)

nightmare start from sinner. alcaraz is playing well, but sinner has made some truly shocking errors

brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 September 2025 19:31 (five months ago)

yea sinner needs to step up or this will be straights prob

johnny crunch, Sunday, 7 September 2025 19:40 (five months ago)

they showed a stat that in 5 of their past 7 matchups, the first set loser had gone on to win the match

brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:06 (five months ago)

couple of really boneheaded decisions by Carlos in that last game of set 2 (trying a drop shot from three feet behind the baseline, going for a swinging volley inside the service line on a slow, high-arching slice from sinner when letting it bounce would have produced an easy sitter) and we’re even

brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:14 (five months ago)

ashe still half-full…

is this due to extra security faff re Trump's attendance?

nashwan, Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:25 (five months ago)

yes. the grounds outside Ashe were thronged with thousands of people 45 minutes after the match was supposed to start

brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:31 (five months ago)

ok, how about one set when both players play well

Bp in the sinner serve in the 4th

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:45 (five months ago)

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:47 (five months ago)

Beautiful exchange at the net for Sinner to save the bp!

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:49 (five months ago)

Great game from Sinner to hold.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 20:52 (five months ago)

But Sinner is broken in the middle of the set. That's probably it. Sinner just can't get into Alcaraz's serve today

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 21:10 (five months ago)

Immense serving..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 21:20 (five months ago)

Alcaraz to serve for it all

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 21:24 (five months ago)

Had to soak it up to an UE from Sinner

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 7 September 2025 21:27 (five months ago)
