this might reflect more of a hope than a reality, but this is a thread for documenting any trends that feel like a shift away from the centrality of the mobile internet in everything. it's kind of an extension of the 'technological backwards steps' thread. i've noticed that more people seem to be annoyed with the mobile internet in everything, at least on ilx lol. it seems likely to me that this extends outward into the general population. so: will there be examples of product manufacturers who move away from generic touchscreens on everything back to physical buttons with dedicated functions? it feels increasingly luxurious to me to have physical buttons that do dedicated things, bypassing a million software layers and just connecting to the thing that happens in a much more direct way. obviously the smart phone screen experience continues to rule everything right now and i don't think the mobile internet is going away, per se. but i think maybe it might start to be dialed back to more discrete uses if there is enough of a trend away from its hyper saturation. car design is definitely on my mind re: this topic. the tesla is like the apotheosis of this trend, a computer on wheels, a mobile tesla app. maybe it's cheaper to let constant connectivity to some awful organization be the driver of everything, but the user experience feels increasingly like an enslavement, to use a dramatic word. automatic functions assume use cases that don't apply to me. manual options give me control. they exist permanently, they don't disappear into a different menu with every update. anyway, i hope to see examples of a move away from the app model in everything. i feel like it could happen that people who live through their smart phones could be seen as uncool and passe in the near future. that's what i hope at least.
