Summary - Jake ran around for 4 rounds while AJ pulled punches, kept diving at his ankles, then AJ broke his jaw in round 6 after he was done playing with his food. It was embarrassing.

Didn't realise this was last night. Assumed Joshua would be well paid to at least stand the cunt up for a few rounds, but maybe Paul is deluded enough to think he didn't need to stipulate that in the contract.

I was disappointed when Tyson didn't kill him so this is nice. In an ideal world he shuts up and fucks off now but if he's too addicted to the attention he should up the stakes next time, maybe wrestle a Grizzly or something

AJ has always been a plodder, if Paul’s plan was just to run for 24 mins and lose 8-0 it kind of makes sense, but he’s clearly nowhere near conditioned for that. Anyway, was funny when he got his face busted I suppose, but even in the context of professional boxing the whole thing was so unedifying.

It's horrible for the sport. Obviously AJ was pulling his punches and not going full out until the later rounds, Jake at one point had his gloves down while against the ropes and Joseph had a clear shot and he just stood there and did nothing.

Jake clearly wanted a "quality loss", he knew he couldn't win but wanted the narrative to be "holy shit Paul lasted 6 rounds", and the announcers were happy to foster that narrative as if he actually did anything to earn that as opposed to delaying the inevitable by running away and lunging at dudes legs.

But I mean ain't no way he can book a huge event like this after this, all of his fights have been crap but him "winning" them kept the allure going. In this one he embarrassed himself and the sport and got loudly booed throughout and showed he can't compete with real fighters.

Obviously Joshua could have beaten him in the first round if he'd wanted.

xps I’m not sure that’s true, the ring was extra large and AJ isn’t quick/doesn’t really cut the ring off that well - anyone who has a reasonable level of fitness and knows how to tuck up/clinch would be able to go rounds if they had no intention of actually fighting - which was clearly the case here. Once Paul was knackered he actually threw a few punches, caught AJ clean with one and saw that it had zero effect, he was too tired to run away and AJ broke his jaw with the first clean punch he landed.

seems by far the most likely scenario.

the only other explanation that has a remote chance of being true would be that he understood he would be in for a massive beat down, but was cashing in his ephemeral 'minor celebrity' chips for one big payday before those chips lost all their value. in which case he also was counting on a lot of people hating him enough to want to see that spectacle.

A real top flight boxer like Joshua would know he could kill Paul if he wasn't careful and who would want that on their conscience? According to the quote from him after the fight (posted upthread) he carefully battered Paul for the first five rounds until he reduced him to a hollow shell. Then he finished him with one punch, because he wanted him to know what it means to get in the ring with someone with real skills.

tbf aj had perfectly good reason to slow walk it a bit one you want to give the fans a lil something to watch and two he was being super cautious just cause he didnt want to randomly walk into a big punch even if it was super unlikely, and then paul extended the fight too with his various shenanigans, tbf aj kinda looked like shit out there obvs he was never an amazing fighter but he might be cooked cooked, guess hes fighting fury next so we will see

particularly aj just not adjusting at all to paul doing the same exact run roll clinch routine seems like he couldve caught him on the roll pretty easy even if youre not trying to fuck him up couldve given him a lil something there

in conclusion i think aj did slow walk it a little but also paul extended the fight longer than aj wanted which is embarrassing for him, knocking him out in 3 or 4 wouldve looked a lot better

AJ wasn’t carrying him or pulling punches. He isn’t some sort of killing machine, he’s obviously 100x the boxer Paul will ever be (and he’s a lot bigger than him), but he’s also slow, stiff and relatively ‘basic’ in his technique. He’s not been a world champion for ages and in his last fight, which was over a year ago, he got knocked out extremely badly.

Jake ran away from him for as long as his legs allowed, then he spent a couple of rounds just falling over whenever AJ was in range. AJ didn’t really have an answer to this because it’s a really fucking weird situation which he has obviously never experienced before. He probably should have sparred against random passers-by to prepare. Then Jake kept getting told off for not fighting and everyone started booing, so Jake threw some punches and then he got knocked out.

idk if you've ever had to do a perfunctory obligation after boxing a few rounds but very few people have a good enough head on their shoulders to say "ok now here's the shit I'm going to say to look cool" after a fight.
