How Much Is Five Bucks?

Nick Kaman, video game creator, on pricing:

In a player’s mind, what does it mean to spend five bucks? Well, that’s five bucks. But six bucks? Well, that’s still five bucks. Four bucks is also kind of five bucks. Three bucks is two bucks. And two bucks is basically free.

So we’ve got these tiers: You know, twelve bucks … that’s ten bucks. But thirteen bucks is fifteen bucks. And we found that eight bucks is still five bucks. It doesn’t become ten bucks. Seven ninety nine, that’s five bucks, right?

Eight bucks going to five bucks is the biggest differential we could find in pricing, so we found it very optimal.

not enough to buy you lunch anymore, but sometimes still enough to see a local show

6.66 cigarettes

acceptable tip on bills under $25

one bag of potato chips

enough gas to get you through the next two days

Four bucks is the answer that makes the most sense to me, though, since that's roughly the buying power now compared to pre-pandemic

This makes me want to go find a list of all the $7.99 games on the App Store

For good or ill, my mind loves precision too much to accept the idea that anything should round off to $5 outside the range of $4.80 to $5.35.

same kind of thing with time, my wife very much thinks of anything past x:35 as being x+1 o'clock. Even after all these years she still gets me every once in a while when we have to go somewhere or do something before a certain time. She'll say "it's already 5 o'clock and we still haven't _____" and I start lightly panicking until I look at the time and it's actually 4:38.

Sadly I also do this with my age. In my mind, I'm already 40. It ain't fair

Agree with this one, but my wife will sometimes round up to the half-hour, like "It's 5:30!" (it's 5:12), which annoys me.

I think six bucks is five bucks, but beyond that I get into grumpy-old-man "That's how they get you!" territory.

5 bucks is 4 bucks when buying food but 7 bucks when buying anything else

You’re lucky if you can get a pint on draft for $5, or two tacos

I have found it is better to tell my son that we are leaving in 300 seconds instead of 5 minutes, for some reason that seems to motivate him.

this is hard.

I can think of many examples where the difference between 4, 5 and 8 is significant:
- Kilo of fresh fruit or vegetables. Often the difference between normal and organic.
- Drinks at the restaurant. Wine or a good beer are often 7-8 per glass.
- Meal prepared at home (one portion). Maybe the difference between vegetarian and meat.

I don't think I can find an amount threshold where I really start considering my spending. If I have a fair price in mind, even a one-buck difference can stop me from buying. If I'm buying a car, nothing under a thousand difference is going to matter.

I'm sure many people treat five bucks as zero, meaning, not an amount worth saving or really considering. Snacks, drinks, ice-cream, renting a film, all the small pleasures you're not going to deny yourself. I'm sure half the economy runs on this.

I’ll have to think through whatever my answer to this question is, but I vividly remember, as a child, that $5 was a fuck of a lot of money. Once I round a five dollar bill just under a parked car outside of Roy Rogers (after dinner with my mom) and felt like I was richer than King Midas.

Hell yeah $5 when I was a kid meant a splurge at 7-11 and then an hour or two hours of arcade games.

I literally did this for an appalling number of Saturdays: finish taking out the trash, collect my allowance, then Big League Chew gum and Galaga or Asteroids.

go home mr. businessman, you can't dress like me

you'd lose clients and people would call you "gay"

jimi hendrix called himself "gay" but only when he needed to get out of the army

after that he called superman a "faggot"
