I used to think he was too dour, saturnine, phlegmatic etc. and bought into all the bad joeks about his wooden acting– to go with his wooden leg!– but I have enjoyed seeing him recently in The Dark Angel and If You Could Only Cook and have always really liked him in Hitchcock's Murder!- maybe the first complete British talkie! iirc, depending on how you count, since Blackmail had only limited dialogue– so perhaps I need to keep an eye out for him in more films.

That could be another one of those firsts that I am wrong about, like the Asian Actress Academy Awards discussion on the Merle Oberon thread, since apparently Hitchcock himself directed yet another talkie before those two, Juno and the Paycock.

Ah, that one was after Blackmail and before Murder!.

Anyway, Herbert Marshall is also in Foreign Correspondent which I haven't seen in ages. I mostly remember the two scenes that get talked about the most, the plane crash and the umbrellas, along with the general vibe of it, but no other details.

Now recalling the scene of him in Murder! shaving and talking/thinking to himself with a full (unseen) orchestra behind him.

Figured if I made a George Brent thread Herbert should have one too.
