A good joke from Bluesky:

"Soon, all the films in close proximity to it will also be THE THING. Within the year, all films in the registry will be THE THING."

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Thursday, 29 January 2026 17:29 (one month ago)

Tramp & The Dog and its not even close, the dog bites that guy's butt so hard and just does not let go, cinema is a miracle we come to this place for magic

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Thursday, 29 January 2026 17:29 (one month ago)

somehow, a dog biting a tramp on the butt feels good in a place like this

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Thursday, 29 January 2026 17:30 (one month ago)

Well I was gonna pick something but One Eye Open has given the definite take imo, lock thread.

Haven't seen any of those silents, so between one of these:

“The Thing” (1982)
“Before Sunrise” (1995)
“Clueless” (1995)
“The Incredibles” (2004)

Gonna go with Linklater.

cryptosicko, Thursday, 29 January 2026 17:33 (one month ago)

Good year for Denzel and Texas (a Linklater and an Anderson, plus a good bit of Say Amen... was filmed in Houston).

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 29 January 2026 17:37 (one month ago)

Clueless, definitely. And please not the Wes Anderson film.

Strange, given that I was an Ebert kid, but I've still never seen Say Amen, Somebody.

You should really catch it on the big screen but needs must:

god there's a lot of barrel scraping going on here

Boomkat Dildo (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 January 2026 19:26 (one month ago)

yeah, only two movies from between 1926 and 1981 is an alarming trend.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Thursday, 29 January 2026 19:32 (one month ago)

i was about to click for High Society and then I noticed Clueless

I did a quick calculation of movies in the NFR by decade (for decades-spanning series I used the earliest date):

1890s 11
1900s 15
1910s 51
1920s 89
1930s 117
1940s 109
1950s 114
1960s 108
1970s 125
1980s 93
1990s 63
2000s 22
2010s 8

So, movies from the 1920s-'70s are already pretty well represented compared to more recent stuff.

Someone's pointed out the lack of films from (as opposed to aboit) marginalised communities as a potential worrying sign.

I think Wes Anderson's work is going to continue to be appreciated through the decades and GBH is def one of his most acclaimed films, though it wouldn't be my choice, but - 2014 just seems way too recent. Gotta give it 20 years at least imo.

Daniel R: In May Trump fired Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. Sources at LOC-Culpeper say that the NFR process was delayed because of this leadership vacuum (and the October-November shutdown).

As for the many recent big-budget major films added to the NFR each year, the LOC solicits nominations from the public (https://www.loc.gov/programs/national-film-preservation-board/film-registry/nominate/). Fans have been known to organize and stuff the virtual ballot box.

During the Hayden years the NFR added a number of films from and about minority communities.

In the meantime, the National Gallery of Art just announced a program of films on the NFR...Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard, The General, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Even more than ever I miss ex-film curator Peggy Parsons.

That all makes sense, thanks for the info - and yeah, the worrying development bit was very much from a pov of "everything belonging to the state now has to contend with Trump".

The ballot stuffing thing is funny, reminds me of when the Buffy The Vampire Slayer and I Love Lucy fandoms went to war over a "best tv show ever" poll from tvguide.com or something.
