Where can you find Oscar Wilde, Edwina Currie, Alan Turing, David Beckham, Radclyffe Hall, George from the Famous Five, and the entire Royal Household Staff?

Well, it had to happen … and it has.

Unfortunately nominations close in ten minutes’ time. But you never know - possibly Peter the organiser has gone to bed and won’t be checking his e-mail again for six hours…

I nominate my friend Hugo Greenhalgh for being one of the four people to sue the British govt. in Europe court re. age of consent parity. Hugo and friends won their case last year. Yay Hugo!

mike (ro)bott, Friday, 29 November 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, technically the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence canonised Derek Jarman in 1991!

He died on my birthday, too, which made me cry.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 November 2002 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

no one seems to have nominated T0ny Blair.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 29 November 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

DV what are you saying? My expert on Scottish public schoolboys is due to visit, maybe he could enlighten us.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 November 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

all I'm really saying is that I think all public figures are gay. but him especially.

I'm reminded of a great conversation between two friends:

Friend One: Have you heard? Cherie B1air is pregnant.

Friend Two: Oh. Who's the father?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 29 November 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely Oscar Wilde is Irish? (Sorry to nit-pick!)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 29 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i vote dustin gee!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 29 November 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Just as long as nobody votes for Les Dennis (Go Mark!)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 29 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a *big* debate between some of the readers of Peter's blog as to whether Oscar Wilde should count as British or not. Eventually, it was pointed out that a) he was definitely born in the UK and b) the BBC included Bono in their 100 Great Britons list, and he wasn't.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 29 November 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

jimmy somerville, prince william, honorary mention for genital piercing to prince albert, and tinkie winkie

Queen G (Queeng), Friday, 29 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Alfred "Lord" Kitchener, Field Marshall Montgomery; Harold MacMillan (that one surprised me when I heard it!)

But...for a real, authentic heroism, you can't get finer than The Stately Homo of England himself, Naked Civil Sevant and part time model for deodorant ads, Quentin Crisp.

Lord Gay, Friday, 29 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed that Bono thing. How on earth did they justify that (no, not his being great, tho obv.)? At least with Oscar Wilde there's some debate.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The reasoning was something like that he had spent much or most of his career in Britain. It seemed pretty feeble and stupid, even if it's true (I wouldn't know). Wasn't Bob Geldof in there too?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Stage one of the voting for the Gay Great Britons poll has opened, here. For this bit, all you have to do is select 20 people who you think should be on the final shortlist.
