Frustrating NY Times article about Roberts and his summer Maine vacation home that glosses over some of his longtime evil and racist hack ways and kinda wants us to feel bad for him now there are boat protests. Boo hoo

“As a lawyer, he had been regarded as one of the most talented courtroom advocates of his generation, with a gift for explaining concepts simply. He still has flawless aim with toasts and eulogies, winning over room after room, friends say.”
But no mention of his nearly lifelong role since his time in the Reagan justice department trying to tear down the civil rights act

I mean the voting rights act but he has gone after other ones as well

it wouldn't work because there would be this giant "NOOOOOO" bezerking buzz sound whenever the conservative majority did anything

alito would be like, "uh, i hate anyone who isn't a white male chris---" BZZZZZZZZZZ
it would be too disruptive, too real for this court

Legal news journalist Chris Geidner notes re NY Times article on Justice Roberts :
(His “chief defender” in the Maine community, Kevin Lipson, just happens to be a Venable partner based out of D.C., though The New York Times’s report doesn’t mention that fact — or that the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association is thrilled to have Lipson on its board because he helps the fishermen fight “overly-burdensome regulations.”)

Good news: Alito was making noise about retiring soon, which made people think he was going to do it immediately after the midterms if the Democrats won the Senate, so that Trump could jam through a replacement while Republicans still held control. But now he's saying he won't retire before the end of the court term next summer:

Seems like a bad plan for him and Republicans

i hope he loses his spot to a democratic-appointed judge, too, but from the crest of the "blue wave" that appears to be coming in 2026, i'm trying to remember that americans really do have selective amnesia and that who knows is going to win in 2028 - everything that is happening now will be but a distant faint memory when the new big shiny thing happens and it's time for decision 2028 and somehow we are dismayed that once again 48.1% of americans are voting for the fascist
― z_tbd, Tuesday, 6 October 2026 18:38 (three weeks ago)
in other words, yeah maybe he should ride it out, 2028 is not a given outcome, and if he did it right now, i think even a couple of the fucking worst people of all time (gop senators) _might_ prevent it from happening

I know, I hate the merger and I think it will have bad effects but I also wonder how long til they turn around and start selling it off anyway.
