i am some way short in serenity to accept

think im ok at the others

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:07 (one week ago)

I think of myself as a fairly courageous (bordering on unwise, at times) person, but need to elevate my standards a bit to DEMAND change for all the things that suck / are subpar / are not fit for their true purpose. So I voted for courage despite that not quite accurately describing the real issue in my day-to-day.

― trm (tombotomod), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:12 (one week ago)

now look its just you and me here for the moment

how can you be sure that you're not lacking the wisdom to know the difference chief

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:13 (one week ago)

everyone else who responds- prepare for similar grilling

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:13 (one week ago)

I see the path as more of a package deal, not a series of separate steps or skills. Citing one as the reason for one's difficulty in progress toward serenity shifts around, depending on one's emphasis or temporary perspective.

its a poll, pick one

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:44 (one week ago)

your imperative voice doesn't move me

― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:46 (one week ago)

Aimless I feel you are missing the point of the poll’s argument, but that can be resolved at a later time.

To darraghmac - I actually feel, frequently, that I am too soft on people and try to never judge, always try to accommodate - not out of fear for my ability to withstand and win a confrontation, but because I worry whether my confrontation would add unnecessary stress or lead to the failure of an incremental change for the better. So I ask for improvements, I look for opportunities to compromise; it’s never a question of my courage to say NOT GOOD ENOUGH it’s a question of my attitude to meet my peers and colleagues at their level and find the balance that gets us all to the best place possible

― trm (tombotomod), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:52 (one week ago)

reasoned

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 October 2026 20:54 (one week ago)

Def courage: I’ve focused a lot on identifying and accepting what’s out of my control, but timidity has been holding me back, I feel like I’ve painted myself into a corner of avoidance and, if we’re not mincing words, cowardice. More than that, the exact term I landed on to describe how I’ve been feeling, how the news makes me feel, is discouraged. There are things I know I could do, but fear and resignation get the better of me. The upshot, though, is that acceptance opens space to oush back against that.

The Poll might be better to go back a step and check if people primarily want serenity. Other options for the main theme of life might give it a close run, such as: excitement and adventure, passion, deep connections, obsession or purpose, or achievement.

For serenity though, the wisdom bit seems crucial. The problem is that only partial information is available to make wise judgements.

― Bob Six, Saturday, 17 October 2026 22:14 (one week ago)

the poll isnt interested in the entire gamut of what any and everyone may want, it's based on a very famous utterance, so that's an invalid and unhelpful piece of feedback and we reject it utterly

agreed on the wisdom!

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 18 October 2026 00:03 (one week ago)

im not a student of these common prayers or whatever (id lazily been lumping this one in as one of st franciseses) but i do like this framework as an approach to manage myself at work during a busy day

obv i dont ask god for the help, its a centering exercise etc

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 18 October 2026 00:06 (one week ago)

i never liked firefly anyway

Definitely serenity. My life is full of blockheads (being nice here) who for unfathomable reasons cannot seem to understand that everyone’s lives would be improved immeasurably if they would just do what I want when I want it done.

I choose courage tho tbh I suspect it's not so much bravery as willpower and energy that's in short supply

― L'enfer, c'est les otters (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 18 October 2026 05:52 (one week ago)

Honestly this prayer basically changed everything in my fucking life and I’m voting courage because that’s still a daily battle

― a hoy hoy, Sunday, 18 October 2026 06:19 (one week ago)

pretty sure sinéad introduced me to this

― mookieproof, Sunday, 18 October 2026 08:55 (one week ago)

Need serenity this morning as I lost my glasses walking the dog and will have to wait until pay day next Friday to see again ffs

wondering if a more ambitious piece of peer-reviewed sociological research could reveal when, to some degree of precision, the “wisdom” starts to take hold

― trm (tombotomod), Saturday, 24 October 2026 00:14 (three days ago)

you impatient motherfucker, beg for sufficient serenity ffs

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Saturday, 24 October 2026 00:50 (three days ago)

TS: Serenity Prayer vs. Kenny Rodgers' advice

1) You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
2) Know when to walk away, and know when to run
3) Never count your money while you're sitting at the table, as there will be time enough for counting when the dealing is done.

I’m a month away from 4 years sober and despite having worked the 12 steps within my first year, I feel like it has only been in this year that I am starting to understand and accept, all through a lens of step 1. So… for me, 3 years to truly grasp that acceptance is the answer and beginning of all attempts at serenity, wisdom or courage?

I think it may be different for everyone though. I had to go on a proper journey through the dark night of the soul to get to giving up and giving in.
