I was on a panel today where one of the questions was about personal/professional credos. Like, what are the words or ideas that sum up your approach to life or work. I took the professional tack and said that as a journalist mine were to "cultivate curiosity" (remain interested in the world, basically) and "fight the bullies" (which is what a lot of my journalism boils down to, especially these days).
I'd have to think longer about non-work-related principles, although they would have elements of both of those I'm sure. Anyway, it was an interesting question to be thrown, so I thought I'd pass it along. What guides you?

Have a reason for everything you do.
Maybe seems simple or doesn't make sense outside public sector jobs, or maybe it does idk, but that is mine.
On a number of levels really, from each tiny piece of specific work you do to big projects, to meetings to elements of design or whatever. I formed this when writing or designing things as a way of justifying one design over another, or even one word over another. But it's bigger than that now in my general work.
Another way I think about it is "you can't do this job without a belief system". And that ties into the source of reasoning and is about morals and motivation.
I feel like in public sector/government work it's not a given that everyone has both a reason for all they're doing and believes in it, and if you do you are already one step towards manoeuvring around those people to help the public.

At work it's "solve more problems than you cause." Overall it's "the quality of your life is determined by how closely you pay attention," though the wording on that one changes a lot.

After some moments of thought, I'd say my all-purpose credo would be along the lines of "pay attention".

I like the line attributed to Arthur Ashe:
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
