gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i have hiccups

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good idea, however i never bother to do it.

michael bourke, Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm just starting #4

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

you should also take 2 panadol or similar drug before you go to bed. my ex swears that used to prevent really bad hangovers.

donna (donna), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i used to take a couple of aspirin or whatever with the water. however, pain relievers and alcohol together = not recommended for your stomach.

ron (ron), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

well its 6am, and i've just finished number #5 now, so i'm going to waddle off to bed...

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Bless.

chris sallis, Sunday, 1 December 2002 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth's gonna wet the bed!

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 1 December 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

pain relievers and alcohol together = not recommended for your stomach.

Paracetemol based painkillers would be OK.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Very bad for your liver though

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh pish, not unless you overdose. Whereas a normal dose of aspirin or ibuprofen is not good on an empty stomach, as Ron says.

I can never be bothered to drink more than a pint as I know I'll be up at 6 to go to the loo. The painkiller trick does work though. My dentist was telling me about new research into the efficacy of preemptive analgesic strikes.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a hangover

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you overdosed on water.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 1 December 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I can second (third, whatever) the taking of paracetemol before going to bed. It doesn't reduce the evilness of a hangover on most levels - you still feel slow, dim-witted, dry-mouthed, incapable etc. - but, unless you've really gone mad, the headache part should be negligible.

I also know that I'll be going to the loo all night regardless, so I usually have 1-2 pints before bed - I know it should be more, but a) I can't be bothered, and b) - and this is thee bit that really, really works - I try to have several non-alcoholic drinks throughout the evening. This latter bit reduces the nastiness by maybe three quarters. It is SO worth it.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 2 December 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

But do you get the non-alcoholic drinks on *your* round (opening yourself up to murmurs of cheapskatery) or on other people's (meaning that you don't get your fair share of the pot)?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

am i still the only person who has a pint of water with each pint for the first two or three pints? generally seems to help a lot, even if you have to put up with pete's mockery.

also: have a big bottle of water with you (like, a litre and a half or something) and drink it on the tube on the way home. as long as you've had a piss just before leaving the pub this is a painless way of getting more water down you.

i will have to try this paracetemol trick.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

For heaven's sake. Hangovers aren't *that* bad. I refuse to have any part in this obsessive water tomfoolery.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

you've clearly never had a proper hangover, nick.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still not fully acquainted with this hangover mularkey.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

You've never had a proper hangover until you've had PERRY.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

um, joei to thread?

ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I very rarely drink more than a cup (some small fraction of a pint). This is largely because Oxfrod tap water is scuzzy.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Arrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *shoots self*

Sarah (starry), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The amount of glee Dan will have upon reading this cannot be described.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

*bleeds copiously*

Sarah (starry), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all paracetamol addicts. I have a baran gene in this respect as I seldom get bad hangovers, I find the worst I ever get is a slight headache for an hour or two after getting up.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone tried "coating" their innards with olive oil/yoghurt beforehand? i've heard that works too

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

vitamin b you ninnies

jones (actual), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a pint of milk beforehand and a pint of water when I get home - or more milk if there is any. Nutritious!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually follow toby's path, a few heaping waters throughout the night and one before bed. works ok. also aspirin before bed if I have truly raged that night.

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

A chance to quote from my favourite hangover song, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down by Kris Kristofferson (I recommend the Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash versions). The first lines are:
"I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that it didn't hurt.
The beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i recommend a dirty great chip butty
