The ILX 2002 Reader's Poll

By popular demand! This year ILX is doing a 'reader's poll' - with a small range of categories (2 music, 1 film) to see if it works.

Here's how to vote - you get your ballot to ilxpoll2002@hotmail.com (in the email text, no attachments please) by 31st December 2002. You can vote in as many of the categories as you want.

Here's the twist though - YOU HAVE TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS EITHER ILM OR ILE. To make things more interesting we'll be running two 'competing' polls as well as the overall one. Identify yourself based on preference, or where you're posting more, or a guess about other peoples tastes. The different results should make for some interesting cross-board debate.

The categories -

MUSIC: MULTI - this means any collection of tracks that was first made available during 2002 - including new albums, EPs, mini-albums, mix-CDs, and compilations including reissue compilations. Expanded versions of previously issued albums qualify too - simple just-the-original-tracks reissues don't officially but we'll throw them in.

Voting is very similar to the Village Voice poll (so as not to make extra work if you're posting in that) - you choose your favourite TEN items and have ONE HUNDRED points to split between them; nothing gets less than 5, nothing gets more than 30. If you don't indicate points it's assumed you're giving 10 each. If you pick less than 10 then you get to divide up less points - 5 picks means 50 points to divide, 6 picks means 60, and so on.

MUSIC: SINGLE TRACK - Your favourite 10 tracks which came out in 2002. Don't bother ranking, just list them. If you can't think of 10 put less.

FILM - Exactly as with the Multi Music category, pick your 10 favourite 2002 films and divide 100 points between them - nothing more than 30, nothing less than 5.

There you go! So remember -

Closing date - 31st December
INDICATE WHICH BOARD YOU'RE 'VOTING FROM'!!
Don't post your polls on the boards please until the results go up!

and results go up in January. Cheers!

Yay!!!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

As per usual Tom, you make life difficult for yourself with the points mularkey making whay would have been a simple computational exercise into a retype and fill in the blancks typoe thing. (Why don't you insist they send them in as Excel attachment?)

I shall vote though - as an Excel attachment.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we have a books poll as well?

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the difficult maths makes it an unfair poll, the kind of things boffins like will come out tops. You mark my words.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to count it.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril is gonna win! That includes the best film category.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete, as a market researcher I know that if it's worth doing a survey its worth doing it properly - points systems give far more differentiated results and allow better expression of individual preferences. Besides typing in a number and adding on a SUM function is hardly difficult.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that the points system does incease the differential etc, but not to a meaningful degree. But I'm thinking will the extra work be worth it if the results will meaningfully come out in time - and it just leaves Anthony harangueing you from his cove in Canada. I'm only thinking of you Tom.

We've been here before after all...."120 Beats What" anyone?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray! Nice one, Tom!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 2 December 2002 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with 102 is a problem of delegation though - ask 72 people to do something for you and not all of them will finish it.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

NAME AND SHAME!!!!!!!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've done my 102 beats entry!!

Have emailed it!!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

*faints*

Jeff W, Monday, 2 December 2002 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway 102 BT isnt timebound in the same way a poll is.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, not strictly true since
a) It had a deadline
b) It was to celebrate the anniversaire of FT.

Still I'll stop banging on about it and instead start moaning at Ricky T to return my CD.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ooer, crikey, I'd forgotten I still had it

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have sent my votes to Tom. It is very difficult to do, and this distribute-100-points makes it no easier. I could only think of 5 films I wanted to vote for, though I have seen several old movies in the cinema that I liked too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we please clarify what 2002-ness means? e.g. (1) bootlegs that have never actually "come out" - do we go by year of creation? (2) movies that came out 2002 in NZ but were released everywhere else in 2001 (or 2000 or 1999)? 'Cause otherwise I might have to vote for stuff like Undercover Brother, which was pretty funny but y'know...

B.Rad (Brad), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

2002-ness should mean whatever you want it to mean - I'm not invalidating any votes.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom - U&K before you run 102 Reprise, I'ma gonna fix my entry a little (do you have it?) - so wait fer me... like yr gunna run off anyway. I'll do this too, after Tax.

dwh (dwh), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

call me a dullard but can "single track" mean album track or unreleased track or is it specifically a single?

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah - Undercover Brother hasn't even come out in the UK yet!!!

Ifind the point distribution thing a bit dodgy as well, since it is done pure with the knowingness that it will affect the voting rather than as an adequate explaination of how much we like something. So if I wait Lantana twice as much as say Talk To Her does not mean that I liked it twice as much, or that I liked Talk To her infinitely more than - say - Ten which will not be making my list.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Deeds is gonna win best film.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

undercover brother, thats what i was trying to think of! they showed that on the plane, i thought that was, like, a film from 5 years ago or something?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nu answers.

I think the points distro thing is quite a neat way of acknowledging that people vote in polls in order to fix them as well as in order to say what they liked.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i too will be giving lantana more pts than talk to her, and for the same reason; but thinking about it i prob did like it twice as much as talk to her anyway.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(That was an example Toby, I may vote very differently. Though since I have now voted it makes it difficult for me to hide such a retroactive blah-di-blah).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gnu answers.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 December 2002 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it says something about my current music listening habits that i don't think i could name ten albums that came out this year, but for possibly the first year in a long while i can quite easily do the film one...

oh, and nu-answers also :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 8 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
it's not too late is it?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it's too complicated.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, why'd you have to go and make things so complicated? :) < /avril>

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I am crap at voting in these things, I just feel like there's no point even bothering cos (a)I talk incessantly and fanatically about whatever I like anyway and (b)very few others like it. It's like being in the fucking Green party or something.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What does that make Tom?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not too late no - I'm going to add it all up on Sunday.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 3 January 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, your defeatist attiude lessens the chances of cosmos making the list. come on - we can beat them.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 3 January 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

top films:

1. harry potter and the chamber of secrets
2. harry potter and the chamber of secrets
3. harry potter and the chamber of secrets
4. harry potter and the chamber of secrets
5. harry potter and the chamber of secrets

geeta (geeta), Friday, 3 January 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

actually no, that was a lie

geeta (geeta), Friday, 3 January 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

harry currie and the japanese girlfriend

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll try and do it later. I got in such a mood after doing the focus group one that I didn't send it off, I hated so many of the songs!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Scooter?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

don't remind me of what was on the list!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Even shakedown by the time I realised it was the only song on the list I liked!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)
