Enlighten me, I know...Knut Hamsun, Edvard Munch "an unending scream piercing nature", Steffan Iversen, Death Metal...what else is cool or uncool about Norway? I plan to visit one day.

I'm more partial to Swedish death metal. But Norway has fjords.

Oslo was one of the nicest cities I visited in Europe. More like a overgrown suburb, but in a good way -- lots of green and forests even within city limits. Plus it had the Munch Museum (incl. "The Scream"), all the Thor Heyerdahl stuff and the really cool Viking Museum (Vikings rule). Only downside was that it has the nightlife of an overgrown suburb -- then again, I was only there for 2 days.

Dude, they have a city called "Hammerfest". Which I've always imagined must be the scariest place on Earth. Plus the Svalbard archipelago, which likely is the scariest place on earth, containing the northernmost city in the world (Longyearbyen, Lat. 78 00 N), a "temperate arctic climate" (whatever the hell that means), and a populace of mostly Russian coal miners. So close to heaven yet so godforsaken. And then there's Turbonegro, of course. Lyra's right though; Norway is more famous for its black metal than for its death metal.

Home of Roald Amundsen, who kicked Scott's lame ass to the South Pole and back. Good enough reason alone to salute 'em.

Only halfway back.

Three-quarters.

After being subjected to so much Turbonegro, you grow to hate Norweigans, fact.

they have a good standard of living, at leas t "they" say

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Aalto was Finnish, Anthony.

And any country that could produce Turbonegro has to have something going for it.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It hampered my progress in a pub quiz as we rowed over which country had the best standard of living. The answer was Canada but oh no we couldn't put that, we had to put Norway didn't we.

Emma, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hell is in Norway.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Canada is third, After Oz and Netherlands. We were first for ages though. I am sorry he is Finnish

anthony, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Only Norwegian I ever knew was a VERY petite female who liked to get roaring drunk and kick the windows out of police cars.

dave q, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well in this quiz Anthony Canada was first. Flipping Norway.
