discuss whether she is preppy

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That's Lilly Pulitzer, pal, and yes they are TOTALLY preppy.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

im sorry, can you tell me more about her ?

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i know nothing of this fashion designer nonsense.

my clothes come from the LL Bean catalogue (via my mum) or else they come from the Lending Library. The end.

I think preppy indicates upwardly striving (regardless of current economic status), whereas the woman who wears Lily has already made it and doesn't give a hoot. Plus her stuff is just not tailored enough to fit in the classic preppy look.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no, no, no, no, no! yuppie = upwardly striving.

preppie = great-grandfather got there about 300 years ago and doesn't give a hoot

anthony, I didn't mean the correction harshly *cracks whip*. My gym teacher wore Lilly Pulitzer swimsuits to teach swimming.

LP did sportswear for country club women, all big bold florals in ACIEED colours, eg fuschia and Midori green. Really big in the 60s and 70s, you can imagine characters in The Ice Storm wearing the stuff all summer long.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 2 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Shouldn't this be on the Preppy thread?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

You are correct of course Kate. I didn't have any preppies where I grew up so I confuse them with yuppies. So I guess I say Lily is preppy in tradition/culture but doesn't go with yr standard preppy 'look' (like, say Tommy Hilfiger works). We need to have more threads about fashion.

Her clothes are for people who live in the Hamptons on Long Island.

three months pass...
She's back. Lily is back with a vengence! Ah yes, love that Papagallo pink and green...remember Papagallo?

MARANO, ROSEMARY, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They are beyond preppie. Felicity can wear them, with her psedo-J-looks, and I cannot, bah.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I would wear a barrel if Mary said it was preppie. She is the Authority on this.

I actually was browsing the Lilly Pulitzer tennis dress in the "Love" pattern yesterday.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to see Mary mix a Bloody Mary to gauge her true preppiness.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! I've never done that before!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Measuring cups?"

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Ace" dress:

= 2 weeks of not smoking

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Felicty racked up the LP at Tokio 7, she somehow manages to make it look mod.

This store is actually in my home town
