Search: Food, totally unique language, great last names, Eastern Orthodox church, close network among Armenian-Americans.

Destroy: frequent invasions throughout history, assassination of government leaders, tendency to be overlooked in favor of bigger countries.

Djivan Gasparyan is Armenian, right? If so, Armenians rule.

Aram Khatchatourian, Cher -- search.

The Armenian/Azeri border war -- destroy.

Oh yeah, one of my state's leading real estate developers is an Armenian (Hovnanian) who builds the most ugly-ass, poorly-built yuppie roach motels that plague both the suburbs and now the Jersey City waterfront. Hovanian = ass.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, like I know about Armenia.

I've had a variety of Armenian-American friends -- it's a lovely language, actually, when heard spoken -- and yes, last names ROOL. Much of the diaspora after the genocide ended up in California, where there's been some generations of increasing influence economically and politically (the governor of the state in the eighties, George Dukemajian, was the prime example). Took a couple of classes in Armenian history at UCLA, where there's an endowed professor in the field; his son became one of the initial ministers of the country after independence from the USSR. Currently have a good friend living in Glendale, where many families dwell; her family came over from the Soviet Union when she was twelve or so. The Armenian-American network on campus here is small but strong; you can usually hear them offering passionate arguments amongst themselves out on the student plaza at around 5 pm at night or so!

That's great. There are almost no Armenians where I live, and my mom's sort of second and a half generation so she doesn't know the language. We have...food. Lots and lots of food.

"I was born an American... I was raised an American... and I'll die an American, too, in America!! With...Armenians!!!" (Name that quote)

William Saroyan?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taboo?

I've got a thing for Armenians. I hang out at the Glendale Galleria *a lot*.

You naughty man, Arthur. Then again, a serious amount of the Armenian- American women I know are fine.

Supposedly, the Armenian countryside is sublimely beautiful. Beautiful, ridiculously ornate and ancient churches high in the Caucusus mountains. Also there's supposed to be a whole lot of excellent Armenian churches, monasteries, and ruins scattered throughout Eastern Turkey (which tourists can't visit now because of the Kurdish uprising in those parts).

Re Armenian chicks: there was one Armenian girl (from California, a USC grad) who went to my law school. A real breathtaking beauty and very sweet and on Law Review to boot. Of course, she wanted nothing to do with me :-)

Cher? (nee Sarkisian)

Duduk music = best ever.

Armenian for "meerkat" is "schnoorrvoorrr". At least phonetically. Or hang on. It might be "penguin". I currently am annoyed with the British-Armenian community as my "homie" who "representz" me in their midst has BLUDDY NICKED OFF WITH MY DDR MAT. ARRRRGH!! I know lots of rude words in Armenian though. Heh heh.

Sarah, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Teach me rude words in Armenian, please.
