Taking Sides: Pigtails v. Ponytails

Which is best?

apparently eagles in Canada attack people with ponytails because they think they are squirrels. But don't let that influence your choice.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

piggies

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well, what definition of pigtails vs. ponytails are we going to take?

ponytail is singular, it is one bunch on the back of the head. i can see how this could look like a squirrel. i don't like ponytails.

pigtails are TWO bunches, one on each side of the head. these are often curled, hence why they are called pigtails. pigtails ROCK.

however, best of all is... BRAIDS!!! i'm going for the medieval goatherd hoxton look. yes. clerkenwell was once full of dairy maids and all...

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always known pigtails to be plaits (or braids if you're American) and a ponytail to be one bunch that's not braided. A ponytail on each side of the head I know as bunchies. Bunchies win for me.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

pigtails or bunchies as defined by madchen. yup.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me of the bizarre secret language of hair styles I used to use with my mum. I usually had a pony tail, so somehow it became known as a 'this' when I was explaining how I wanted my hair done. A single plait was a 'that'. Bunches were 'these'. One of those things where you put half the hair up was a 'half-this', shortened eventually to 'hathis'.

God, it looks even more weird now I've written it down.

Pigtails! Yum! Ponytails can look sterile, utilitarian (which I guess they are), and often take away the lovely framing effect on the face. Pigtails don't necessarily do that, and they also look cheery, cheeky and sexy. Regardless of the paedo inferences.

Caitlin to thread?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a single plait technically called?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A plait?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

A pigtail!

smee (smee), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

a single plait is called a cue, as in the sort that chinese noblemen used to wear.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Pigtails don't necessarily do that, and they also look cheery, cheeky and sexy. Regardless of the paedo inferences"

Yes, yes, yes! Pigtails! Hooray!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hair currently in two plaits, but that's only because I want it dry wavy.

I go for ponytail with bits falling out (to provide face-framing/ conteract sterile thing and also because that's just what my hair does)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the schoolgirl look, pigtails.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm for ponytails. Pigtails are for little girls. Ponytails are for every woman. They have this half-assed, thrown-together, practical appearance but at the same time are very youthful and pretty I think. I like the little tendrils that fall around one's face.

But I'm not crazy about guys with ponytails (or pigtails - yikes!)

So sue me.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

pigtails

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna with pigtails??? The dreaminess quotient of that is behind my feeble brain.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't do ponytails for the same reason that i can't really do shaved head either - my EARS are two totally different sizes and shapes. i mean, i suppose whispy bits might cover this, but i still feel self conscious. pigtails provide ear camoflague in a way that ponytails don't.

oh, and you can wear a cowboy hat with pigtails that you can't with a ponytail.

ok, here's another question. how high should pigtails be on the head? schoolgirl look, i.e. on the sides or top of the head a la bubbles ppg, or grown up cowgirl stylee, i.e. towards the bottom, at the back of the head behind the ears. i like the latter look loads better.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i prefer both looks with pigtails. mmm good.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

man, i had such fun with hair when i was about 8 and had superlong hair. i mean, i used to be able to do princess leia headphone buns and everything. i wonder if i could still do those... will have to wait until my hair dries and experiment.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a French plait? I think it's bread, but I've heard it bandied about in hairstyle situations.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

A French plait is one that starts just above the forehead - you take in a bit of hair from each side every time you bring a strand into the middle. Perhaps this illustration in the style of Jackie magazine will help to explain:

http://www.rencrafters.com/Hairsticks/Styles/frenchbraid2.gif

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you. Looks a bit like a Klingon's spine.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The hippie boys in my town have taken to wearing pigtails, especially if they have curly hair, then they can do the white-boy-afro-puff thing. Needless to say, this is dud.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

a single plait is called a cue, as in the sort that chinese noblemen used to wear.

actually, everyone in China had to wear it. It was a law the Manchurian Qing dynasty brought in, to show the Chinese who was boss by making them all wear mullets.

In the late nineteenth century a panic swept China that a demon was going around cutting off people's queues, thereby getting them into trouble with the government.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe it was actually Der Schneider, and they'd been secretly sucking their queues.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What about me: Ponytail or pigtails or not?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

get a bludy haircut, yer st-you-dent ;)

i fear this thread may become like the bra one, ie girls talking about stuff and boys drooling...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

how high should pigtails be on the head? schoolgirl look, i.e. on the sides or top of the head a la bubbles ppg, or grown up cowgirl stylee, i.e. towards the bottom, at the back of the head behind the ears
It depends how long your hair is. I love the schoolgirl look one, just because I have a secret ambition to look like girls out of kiddie anime cartoons/the powerpuff girls, but my hair is too long at the moment, and it just looks silly. So shorter hair = high up, long hair = cowgirl look

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i fear this thread may become like the bra one, ie girls talking about stuff and boys drooling...

and the problem is...?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Jellybean you can loop the hair back through the hair band to give the illusion of short hair in pigtails. You also get a lot of volume doing that.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't stop there, keep talking

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, i was writing some ... erm ... smut the other day, from a male POV, where the character was perving on pigtails, ponytails and braids, and i thought i'd gone too far with it... this thread makes me realise that i haven't gone far enough!!!

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

HANG ON A SECOND...

didn't the St.Pauli Girl used to have braids? i SWEAR that i remember her with braids. and when i googled her, there are all these girls dressed up like her WITH braids, but when i look at the official logo, she has NO BRAIDS. is my memory failing me, or have they changed the logo?

fun lovin' beeeeeeeeer... mmmmmmmmmmm...

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i stand corrected. what i thought was braids is actually a sort of floaty scarf sort of thing.

http://www.stpauligirl.com/TheBeer/images/breweryPic01.jpg

fuck, fuck, fuck... the first time i've tried to write an erotic fantasy from a male point of view, and i can't even get the hair right. sigh.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

are you ever too old to wear pigtails? i do ponytail and plaits, and sometimes pigtails at home but feel a bit silly if i go out in them. im not a tall person so i worry that i look like a kid! or just plain stupid.

donna (donna), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the older you get, the lower your pigtails should go. having pigtails above the ears past the age of about 35 is totally unacceptible. (we'll see how i feel about this in five years...) but so long as you keep them low and cowboy style, i think it's fine.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing with both pigtails and ponytails is they expose the back of the neck. Backs of necks = rowr.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like bunchies best, secured with huge fluffy dice. What I like worst is that young lady who used to advertise Playstations. I'm sure she's very nice though.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

there appears to be a very hairy chicken on the side of that picture up there with the bikers.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hate ponytails.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a plait (or a ponytail when lazy) for years and years. My hair was receding, and I knew that someone going bald with long hair looks an arsehole, generally, so I brutally switched to a #1 about five years ago. It was the right decision.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't pippi longstocking have BRAIDS in the books, not bunches? and they were supposed to stick perpendicular out from her head cause they were braided too tight.

kate, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear Julian braids his ass hairs.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A single ponytail, high or low, looks nice and fresh. High pigtails/bunches only work if you have above shoulder length or shorter hair or else it looks too scary. The word 'plait' is nice, makes me think of ponies and ribbons.

Genevieve, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I am desperately trying to find that picture of Fairuz be-pigtailed. That would settle this.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

dakatin that is exactly why long hair is wrong for high pigtails. Also makes me think of the junior's section at Sears and scrunchies. Two low plaits are pretty though.

Genevieve, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get me started talking about french braids! We'll be celebraiding until MORNING!

ModJ, Friday, 3 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but it's all about that moment when they let it down and do that little sway back and forth in slow-motion.

but nothing can replace the spot in my heart reserved for pig tails. no. nothing. ever.
