Disneyifying

So David and I went to the space science center today. It is designed by Douglas Cardinal and i remember it as one of the only places i remeber enjoying hard science. It made me feel awe. So do you know what they did. They added this lurid carbuncle to the side of it. They replaced the interesting exhibits with these uberkitsch candyland disney games. The only science is bulleted on the huge wall boards that really do not tell you anything. So anyone else have one of their beloved child hood monuments raped.

How's it raped if you love kitsch? AHHHH.

That is a crime against science.

I do not like kitsch. I like camp.

Our Museum of Science & Industry is the same way. I used to love it when I was a kid, but now it's just one big ad for corporate technology. The agricultural and medical stuff is okay, but there's not much of it. Plus, every time I go there, I get a cold because kids are running their snotty hands all over everything. So, if you're ever in Chicago, don't waste your time here - go to the Field Museum instead.

Is this Science Center which you and David visited in Edmonton, Anthony?

I loved to visit the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia when I was a kid. It was a science museum that was highly appealing to kids -- you had buttons to push, levers to tug on, a big "heart" through which you could walk (with signs explaining how each part of the heart worked), a gigantic Foucault's Pendulum in the stairwell. I last visited in 1985, though, and I understand that there have been "changes" to the Franklin Institute. I hope it isn't now like the place where Anthony visited.

Oh, damn, we have the Big Heart, too. And here I thought we were being original....the heart is a big selling point at the museum.

I dunno, but I thought it was quite tragic when Disneyworld replaced Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with a lame Pooh exhibition.
