Junior Seau and wrestlers = classic.

Samoans have anger issues.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're good at rugby.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Junior Seau, yes indeed. San Diego man, plays for the Chargers = classic, of course. If only he hadn't've gone to USC.

David Tua: Dud.

Dud: American Samoa. Warehousing and shipping spam (the potted meat product) throughout the Pacific Islands. American Samoans don't have representation in Congress, don't get to vote for the President (not that a Presidential vote means much nowadays), but get a subsistance allowance in exchange for housing the American military. Meltdown: Boo-yaa Tribe.

Classic: Western Samoa. They learned rugby then threw out the Kiwis. Queen Salote famous for riding in open top car in a downpour at Elizabeth's coronation (prompting fat joke from Noel Coward).

Teetering in the balance: the Girl Scout cookie called the "Samoa." Delicious mix of coconut, chocolate, and caramel, but has followed the path of the other types of Girl Scout cookies in getting way too cloying.

MM, girl scout cookies. Brian says they are called caramel delights now. Ugh! Next thing you know a white russian will be a milky splash.

matthew, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could eat 8,000 Samoans.

I MEAN THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIES YOU PERVERTED FREAKS.

where's hanle y when you want him to be around?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Off at Waffle House, probably.

To tie this into one of the other ILE-UN threads that popped up today, Western Samoa was once a German territory. I'm sure there's an interesting story in how the Germans got possession of Samoa, but although I am the King of Useless Information (see my lengthy discursion on the history of the Polish language) I am at a loss re Krauts in the Pacific.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Zealand nicked Western Samoa from the Kaiser during or after the first world war. How the Germans got them in the first place, I don't know, and I'm not going to look. One has to have limits.

Search: that American Samoan bloke who ran the 100m in over 14 seconds at Edmonton recently. He must have done something wicked bad to qualify. I mean, even I can run faster than that so there's no way he was actually the fastest sprinter in his whole country.
