Lloyd Cole Knew My Father

If you haven't heard this is the new 'show' featuring ex-NME journos Stuart Maconie, Andrew Collins and David Quantick telling various rock anecdotes - presumably along the lines of "I remember when Cass from The Senseless Things pissed into Carol Decker's letter box' or some such. I don't know, I haven't seen it. But I wouldn't mind!
It's at the Edinburgh festival at the mo' but should, could be doing a brief tour.
Kinda odd though, dontcha think? Are they now in a permanent retro groove or something? Doomed to forever re-gurgitate misty-eyed reminiscenses of late 80s/early nineties trivia?
Still, like I said, if they play anywhere near me I'd like to go along. After all, they are basicially doing what we are doing - only they are getting paying audiences for their trouble.

this is the most shameless attempt to get the pinefox to post since i promised him that run-dmc tape.

I miss not reading Pinefox as much as I miss not reading Hanle y.

1. Thread consisting of two posts mentioning me = Classic.

2. This thread = like honey to bear.

3. Are you serious - that's what it's called?

4. Lloyd != trivia but a great pop songwriter of last 20 years.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not so great according to your 30 greatest songwriters poll. He'd be higher up in mine! Well, probably.

Coincidentally, no sooner did this show open in Edinburgh than the second-hand record stores became crammed to the ceiling with old Lloyd Cole vinyl. Presumably C+M&c. have reminded everyone of the existence of the dreary old bore, prompting them to purge their dwellings of his morose and tuneless ramblings.

alex thomson, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cookie: no, he didn't make my top 20 - but that doesn't stop him being a great *of the last 20 years*. There is no contradiction here.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it reminds me of singer sargent. light coming through windows and all that

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you would like rattlesnakes. please listen to it.

youn, Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My original 1984 (?) cassette of Rattlesnakes had a different cover to the one on the CD I bought several years ago. I can't quite remember what my 84 version showed though. I assume the CD has the "original" cover.

Hunter (Hunter), Saturday, 18 September 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes! get rattlesnakes immediately!

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 19 September 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hunter, maybe it was the original U.S. cover?

my geffen/polydor lp released in the us in 84 has a photo of the band in a rehearsal room with light shining in from a window on the left and lloyd cole looking fantastic in black perched against a table in the center with his guitar. the other side is orange-red with yellow lines painted on the edges. the inner sleeve has a black and white photo on one side of a goldfish bowl on a table with a white table cloth and lloyd standing with his arm against the frame of a window behind the others. i remembered the cd sleeve as blue, but it is actually bluish-grey: a photo of a door by a window. the door is ajar. the wall isn't papered or painted so you can see the wood. the other side is yellow. (xxpost -- too late.)

youn, Sunday, 19 September 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

so what does it sound like? i somehow imagine lots of arpeggiated guitar parts.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 19 September 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

perfect skin was a radio hit. the sound of that song is characteristic of the album, but the songs have varied structures. i'm not sure of the proper reference of musical terms, such as 'arpeggiated guitar parts,' but i will try to describe perfect skin based upon what i think musical terms mean from the way i've heard them used. the singing is bluesy -- it opens with this woo-hoo-ooo -- but the delivery is fast. at times it sounds like lloyd has a cold. the guitar is prominent. the drums are not particularly exciting. the guitar part after the verse is twangy, country-ish, and very recognizable. during the chorus it is janglier and there are a couple of punctuating riffs. during the guitar solo, the verse part is played like the chorus part, but more rock -- fast, and the riff turns into this screaming clencher that ends abruptly and lloyd carries on cool and matter of fact.

a real amateur, Sunday, 19 September 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'll see if i can find this at reckless this week

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 19 September 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

why does every single thread remind me of some bit of business on a wu-tang album recently?

four years pass...

Lloyd Cole, golf aficionado, travel writer

Yeh, he's just ripping off his former bassist, isn't he?

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

I think 'ripping off' may be a bit strong. I had drinks with both of them and they were quite happy to see each other.

Last night it was pullulating with (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

I meant it playfully ... I used to work with Lawrence and got the impression the relationship with Lloyd was convivial enough. That said: if I was the former (ie former Commotion turned successful golf writer) and the latter (ie the former Commotion whom everyone still recognises, and ladies of a certain age still love) started muscling in on my golf-writing patch, I might be the tiniest bit aggrieved ;)

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Well, not so very oddly enough, when I had those drinks, some four years ago (?), there was a LOT of golf talk.

Last night it was pullulating with (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

Was that during the reunion tour? Lawrence did seem to see the whole thing as an excuse to try to beat Lloyd at golf. I'm not sure whether he succeeded. Which would potentially make it even more irritating if Lloyd began writing about it, too. Heh.

I bought Donegan's book on living in Ireland, though not his book specifically on golf. But I guess they both love golf and will always want to play golf, and maybe talk about it.

I was puzzled in the Ireland book by the chapter where he describes going to see Lloyd play and not daring to go and introduce himself afterwards - I'd have imagined they were still in touch. Presumably they all are now.

I haven't really met these people as you have, save that in 1996 I was briefly backstage at a Lloyd Cole concert and said something to him. I have an unreliable idea that Robert Quine was on that tour: maybe I should have concentrated on trying to talk to him instead.

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 January 2009 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

I had a friend in high school whose older sister was married to Lloyd Cole, but nobody in my (US) high school knew who Lloyd Cole was, so my friend's attempts to gain social traction from this fact were met with complete failure.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 8 January 2009 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

It's not failing with me! Have some social traction!

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 January 2009 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

Pinefox, I'm pretty sure you're right about Quine.

Lloyd's wife is a lovely lady. Incidentally, she turned my gf on to Paula Fox fwtw.
