Laurie Pike vs. Katie Puckrick

It's 1991. Duh, *Hello?*

Rover, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Puckrick all the way. I suppose in 1991 I might have said Pike, but Puckrick really came into her own once she settled down on The Word, and especially the Sunday Show. Whereas Pike was merely a presenter showing us them wacky 'Meercans.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd go with Puckrick too. She had a quite enjoyable rival programme to the appalling Girlie Show, "Pyjama Party", which I'd watch shortly before my night long listening-to-the-Fall-and-Pulp binges. Katie and guests would arse around for an hour inbetween segments of a weird old 70's cartoon which I believe was called "The Magic Ball".

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

HEL-lo!

I was sure this was going to be a steadymike thread.

Their spiritual heir is that American woman off of 'BITS'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie Puckrick- hot
Laurie Pike- hosted that weird "United States of Television" show, which was basically Tarrant On TV two years previously.

Thus, Puckrick

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Katy Puckrick. I even have her autobiography in hard back. There's a certain red-head identifying thing going on.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Katie Puckrick mention Laurie Pike in her autobiography?

Rover, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not a whisper.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ima little bit disappointed that Puckrick has an autobio. She's a bit young ferrit.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Even more disappointingly it appears Puckrick recently helped present the US TV version of the risible Dot Comedy - which then got cancelled after one show...

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

She's nearly 40 (which, yes, is still young for autobio), maybe older now.

It's interesting reading, she's had quite a strange life.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't she a ballet dancer at one point?

JTN OTM re woman on bits :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them both, but Pike wins for being a heartthrob.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Lived in Russia and Berlin as a child since Dad did something high up air force wise, was going to be a ballet dancer until spine problem forced her into a full body plaster cast for a year, slept with bass player from un-named new romantic group, wrote for a year, moved to Britain, married him, toured poland with them, he drank too much, messy break up, did lots of contemporary dance inc. It's A Sin tour with Pet Shop Boys, went back to America to be an actress, came back to UK, The Word. Phew.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's time to slow down, Anna.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them both, but Puckrick wins for being a heartthrob.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Laurie Pike famous in England? Wow. My friend Josh used to go out with her. She came to my moving-to-LA apartment sale in New York. I can't remember what she bought, some snazzy shirts I think. She's very chatty and sweet.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie Puckrik was always great on Mark Radcliffe's graveyard shift. I've only just realised that my brain has her narrate every time I read an Ally post. (I wonder if she'll hate me forever now...)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pike all the way!

My friend Fiona once made Puckrick eat cookies made out of insects.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 5 December 2002 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought about this again today and reckoned: Puckrick wins on looks, but Pike was really the better TV presenter by a distance.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of it the other way around.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

not exactly famous, arthur: she was presenter on a culty series or two (mostly abt bonkers US cable TV shows) for a year or so abt ten yrs ago

haha i remember her being on one of the predecessors to LATE REVIEW, and they were reviewing Wayne's World, and this pompous academic-oid guy waxed at tedious length how eeevil and worthless it all was, and just when he'd finished she sang out "Not!", and it was the most perfect piece of comedy timing and meta-conceptual crit i ever saw on that prog, at any stage.

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually yeah, you're right. Laurie Pike wins on both scores.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Anyone?

Tim Cop, Monday, 22 August 2005 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Still Katie, I love that funny eyebrow of hers

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised by how much people like Puckrick! She was far too annoying for teenaged me on The Word, although that Pyjama Party thing was probably OK. And I am deeply in love with her voice now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Who was listening to her?

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

I spent six months being told I either looked or sounded like Laurie Pike when I first moved to London, which should provide some helpful clues as to when I arrived here.

Whisper it: Katie Puckrick rumoured to be very nice person.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think one of them is quite sexy but I can't remember which one it is.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Whichever one wore the shortest skirts.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

It's Katie, believe me!

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Good God, how did I miss this thread?

Puckrick. She's laaaaverly.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

six months pass...
was back on radcliffe's show last night, talking about LA.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 March 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

"It's a documentary of sorts but it portrays a Bill Gates actor lookalike getting shot and brutally killed. In these times, is that really the right message to be sending?"

Fox News interviews Laurie Pike.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 March 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

(that was Katie i was talking about up there btw)

that http://www.nothingsostrange.com/ site is annoying me now because

a) websites that have music and words that launch the moment you visit their site are bad
b) i know where that 8 note loop is from but can't quite remember it. seefeel, disjecta, aphex, autechre, isan? argh.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 March 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

It's Aphex, from SAW II.

Fox news is funnee.

This fite has a new contender. Aleks Krotoski!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 March 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

"New"? Bah, how long have we been swooning over AK? 5-6 years? I fear my complete lack of interest in computer games means we're doomed as a couple.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 March 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

She was a guest on Monday's Woman's Hour, talking about making websites more female-friendly. The item ended up in knots about knitting.

Listen gain!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 March 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

That's "Listen Again", or "Listen, Gain!"

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 March 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

She's doing a PhD at the University of Surrey - "examining the relationship between communication patterns and group processes in the diffusion of information through an online community." I wuv her.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 March 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

(i think she may be wrong on various levels in that podcast though if she thinks women either have problems with new technology (look at how many females are quite happy with their mobiles and their ipods) or have problems producing content for said ipods (look at any tv / radio programme production credits). maybe i'm misreading what she said as she is normally spot on. and i like her orange hair.)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 March 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

I am shocked by Steady Mike's ardour.

It must be having a baby that has set him off.

I don't know this Aleks lady, but I think I do remember Steady M mentioning her, 5-6 years ago. Possibly 10 years ago, out of my hearing, also.

I am glad that Koogs has revived the thread, because I wanted to when I heard that KP was going to be on Radcliffe, which I missed, alas.

I can Listen, Gain, when Bob Harris has finished, maybe!

But talk doesn't seem to come across as well as music, on the computer, maybe.

I suppose I am fonder of the memory of Pike than of Puckrick, come to think of it.

I wonder if I say as much, upthread.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

When JtN says

Their spiritual heir is that American woman off of 'BITS'

in 2002, is he talking about the same computer lady as you are now?

the bellefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, he must be.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, he was. I missed that.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Years ahead of the pack, as usual.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

rebecca OTM about puckrick = Ally

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I am listening to Puckrick now. She is boasting about seeing Scarlett Johansson who just looked like a pretty high-school girl. I dare say I am just envious.

I don't think Ally talks anything like Puckrick, really.

the bellefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Crikey, I can see why people compared Suzy to Puckrick.

the bellefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

They didn't! It was Pike!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 March 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Puckrick, nice as she might be, sounds a lot less like me than Pikey. Innit.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 March 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Is it? I have not heard Pike for a very long time.

I was thinking really of the way that Puckrick talks on the programme about riding around in a car with Goldfrapp, in Hollywood.

I like Alba's archival precision.

the bellefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

What about Laura Kightlinger? Wasn't she the same person too?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Pike all the way.
