Channel 4's 'Club X' Vs. Channel 4's 'Switch' (replacing The Tube, after Jools Holland said 'fuck')

Anyone remember anything about ... ?

Isn't Club X usually regarded as one of the worst TV shows ever?

oh come on, why no Network 7???

that kicked ass :)

club x was certainly a poor person's N7

But I loved Victor Lewis Smith's Buygones on Club X. The rest was pish.

Victor Lewis Smith's bits in CLub X were incredible, and were later repeated on their own a year or so later. ("Bye bye, little space doggy. Bye bye.") Club X itself, as has been said, was pish. I remember a bit where some women used their naked bodies as paintbrushes by slathering themselves with blue paint and rubbing up against a big canvas - as this contained tits it's the part of this programme that tends to get shown again on clip shows. That and the hilarious bit where the fey presenter shat himself at a massive off-screen explosion during a "tribute to futurism" (i.e. annoying art students dress up in cardboard costumes and wail a lot, while they're all clearly thinking that they're the 80's answer to Luigi Russolo).

I have much of that VLS stuff on very old videos which are probably falling apart. The "Dan Dare Interplanetary Space Communications Kit" segment was awesome.

I remember this making it to the Sunday afternoon repeat, which made me think 'Steady On!'

i also remember this on the sunday repeat, i can't imagine why this had such a large impact on teenage boys...

just glad i wasn't watching it in the front room...

But no one at all remembers 'Switch'? I used to miss it, to go to Cubs, so it would be nice to be enlightened.

I used to have VLS' 1993 BBC2 series on tape - "Inside Victor Lewis-Smith". VLS was supposed to have had a motorbike accident, and spent the entire series wrapped up in bandages in a coma, while his subconcious mind broadcasted television programmes. Me and my sister have memorised the sketch about dubbed Eastern European children's programmes.

More Channel 4 stuff: Who remembers "The Groovy Fellers"?

Wasn't that naked women and blue paint thing an Yves Klein happening from the '60s?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. They were recreating it for a teenage audience.
