Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Have been half-arsedly talking about going to Oban. I shouldn't be half-arsed - I like the idea. I will be whole-arsed and text the man concerned now.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate New Year's Eve. I might get a job in a bar this year, so at least I can earn money while being miserable.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

May or may not be going to a house my friend Dave's parents own on the south coast. Dave not world's best organiser so not sure.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Will be in Ottawa because it's not cold enough here. Plan to be at a party of some sort but don't know where yet. Staying in would probably depress me.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Usually in Wales, but this time staying in LUNDON and will be in the pub.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This will be my first NYE in a club, in some ways I feel I should do something different to what I do every week but then I remember how abysmal New Years Eve's in the past have been.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I always go to parties on NYE.

er, is anyone I know having a party this year?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll probably be here, begging for a cyberkiss at midnight.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Crying.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

What are we doing on New Year's Eve, NYC??

We're forcing bnw to go to Times Square. And then we will all go do something that will be undoubtably sexy. It involves DRINKING.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i will be staring hard at the television, waiting and praying for dick clark to short circuit.

kephm, Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll probably be somewhere in New York City. God, I hope I'm not stuck in Connecticut.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur, does this mean I get to meet thee of the Gilmore insights?? Let's hang! With Ally! It'll be hot!

We're going to have an orgy!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally what are you doing up? Don't you have a job to get sleep for?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'll try and drag my tired old hot ass out on the town at some point over the holidays. It'll be a snorgy! I wonder when that fucker Jess Harvell's gonna hit town? Hi, Jess! I miss you.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 5 December 2002 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

listening to Abba's "Happy New Year" and crying (as always)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 5 December 2002 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

"hey NYCers, pick a good bar"

But a bar on NY Eve is kind of a nein, anyone want to invite us over to their swinging digs, hint hint Tracer Hand.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Arthur! Bring on the GG spoilers! I didn't even watch or tape Tues -- first time ever to blatantly skip proceedings. I think they have oh no! JUMPED THE SHARK! Wait where in Conn. will you be?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be in a cottage in West Virginia, cut off from the world.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I will probably be at the same party as DV. However I have no idea where this will be, as our previous hosts will be in Colorado.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary--I'll be in Groton, the Submarine Capital of the World. In Southeastern CT.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be cybersnogging (with tongues) Melissa, at Graham's parents house on the South Coast.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be in Groton, the Submarine Capital of the World.

Heaven on earth! (My dad was in the submarine service, so I have a sentimental affection for the place -- visited a couple of times back in the eighties.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

But a bar on NY Eve is kind of a nein, anyone want to invite us over to their swinging digs, hint hint Tracer Hand.

He's got a coke table, TWO floors, and a backyard. He can't keep us away forever, away from his decadent Playboy mansion.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

That settles it -- NYE ILXplosion at Tracer Hand's!
(And if there's that much room I can crash there, okay?)

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Groton, CT. Maybe Ian from RI can answer this, if he's reading this thread. Did Arab on Radar really form in Groton, while waiting to be interviewed for a job at the sub factory? It's such a good story, it can't be true.

Also, I can't believe Tracer's got two floors! Wow!

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur, is Groton by any chance near Stars Hollow?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be shut up in a small apartment with my family on vacation! As long as we have plenty of food I'll be happy, though.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Very, very far away, I'm afraid, Mary.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 30 December 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm also djing a smallish party in williamsburg just off graham avenue near daddy's, email me for address/details. I may have a party during new year's eve during the day as u of l is playing in the liberty bowl at 3:30, and I might have cava and tapas for people to eat/drink.

also, a friend has 2 extra tix to that wilco/fl/sk show at msg, if anyone wants 'em email me and I'll put y'all in touch with her (they are hefty at $65 tho).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 30 December 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

gaaaaaaaaaaah.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 1 January 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Exceeded all expectations. Enormous house party off Brick Lane, accompanied by a small army of friends and strangers, including several Ilxers. Three massive houses, three sound systems around a communal courtyard. People jumping off balconies at midnight. 'Body Language' played about three times. Green lasers in one house. Cute girls appearing from nowhere to take me by the hand, then disappearing minutes later. Looking at my phone and realising its only 1am and there's still hours to go and just thinking "yes!"

Then myself and my friend went home, sat in the front room drinking Corvoisier and watching a Kraftwerk DVD until 9am. I kind of want to do it all over again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 January 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

we played monopoly, I won. Then dominoes, he won. Watched Volcano High. Watched the ball drop. bed.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 1 January 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

worked at the liquor store until 9:30, bought some champagne, got on the slow as shit njtransit/path ride to nyc. popped the champagne on the way to my friend's, went to bklyn for pre-party, went to some bar/club/party thing in manhattan, got lost with people i didn't know. not the quality of night i was expecting really bt it got the job done

nervous (cochere), Sunday, 1 January 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

I had to give a box of records to a store guy, get a haircut, cop party favors for the unhookedup, and rent speakers for my friends' party. By 6pm (I woke up at 3pm). Got the shit did, miraculously. Get to the party, turns out the whole show is running from a home mini-system, the speakers are useless. Go with friend to his house to pick up some home speakers, get back, then this girl I think I recognize (apparently a 'friend of Jen') says her friend is in bad shape (she is) so we have to get her home, and since I'm a nice guy, I go okay, long as it's not too far - at one point I realize these hoes is bullshitting abt knowing Jen and I kick them out. Drive back to the party, clock strikes, the girls get supicious abt 'those two girls' (for fucks sake I thought the lyin bitch friend was ODing), etc etc, go to another party, nothing but RANDOMS, everything gets depressing from there. Last NYE I was getting sloppy with one of the finest hoes I had ever seen on a suede motherfucking couch - this NYE was mostly ANNOYing, stressful, cockblockers and party fouls everywhere...next year I'm organizing everything and charging double

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 2 January 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

matt, your night sounded brilliant! where was my invite, beeatch?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 2 January 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

This year was OK. I woke up at like 4pm because the night before we were all out partying until 8am. But I started early. My friend asked me if I wanted to go early to her ex-boyfriend's loft party. I didn't really want to, but she said he's super-rich, has a gorgeous SoHo loft, and that there would be fine champagne and cheese. So I went to that, downed a couple glasses of champers, then walked over to Happy Ending for my friend's party. Bunch of pals were there, but also lots of hos and frat dudes. I heard one guy trying to pick up some girl with a cheesy line, and she slurs back to him "just because i'm a single girl, doesn't mean I'm fucking stupid" - but then I saw them making out on the couch later, so I dunno.

About 4am, left Happy Ending for this party that goes on in the basement of a Chinese restaurant in an office high-rise right off Wall Street. It's an afterhours thing, went until about 7am or so, and its pretty fun. By then everyone is already really drunk and everyone's either dancing or doing bumps of coke somewhere. Then went to some girl's hotel room in the LES, but it sucked. Two Norweigan dudes sitting on the couch watching TV, and a couple of really drugged-up girls, and then 2 people I was friends with were already there. Stuck around for a minute, then went back to Brooklyn, and we tried to go to this after-after-hours thing at the Wolf & Lamb at about 8am, but they weren't letting in anymore people, so I went home, had a bloody mary, and thought about taking a valium that one of the girls at the hotel randomly gave me, but I just played some Grand Theft Auto instead until I passed out.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 2 January 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

How did I end up doing soul-handshakes with the film students?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 2 January 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

DC is such a GEEZer!

the bellefox, Monday, 2 January 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

In the end I got invitations to six different parties, but I had already decided a week ago to go one a couple of friends held in the other's apartment. I arrived at her place at 5PM, did some preparations, guests started arriving at 7PM. Not too many of them, which was nice, it didn't feel to chaotic. One of the guests took a series of photos of everyone's cleavage. I signed a contract (with two witnesses and all) with the other friend promising I'd "grant my seed" to her, should she want children by me. Can't remember what made us do this. Sometime before midnight we did this ritual I had come up with the day before. Everyone wrote on a piece of paper a special wish for the next year that no one else was allowed to see, then all of them were attached to a rocket which was - after an impromptu speech by me - shot the sky with all our wishes. After midnight the memories become fuzzy; dancing, boozing, a bit of friendly snogging and touching of breasts. By the time I passed out every guest except one had left. When I woke he was gone too. Me and the two friends lied in beds 'til afternoon, farting and telling bad jokes.

A rather typical New Year's, I'd say, though lots of fun.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

i went to that party matt dc was in, got drunk, talked to a bunch of strangers, was feeling a bit tired at first but got in the mood a bit later. and then went home later on with loads of losers on the bus chanting arsenal chants, which reminded me how enormously rubbish arsenal were vs aston villa that morning, and it made me giggle and grin. fun!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

I *love* that your typical New Year involves fondling breasts, photographing cleavages and promising to father children. Beats a night in watching Chewing the Fat anyway.

xpost to Tuomas, but I bet Ken did some of that too :)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

So, Mimi was at Times Square, according to this 3D VR 360° Quicktime thingy.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 2 January 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

I went to Boston with a guy whom i may or may not have been dating and hung out with his friends. It was really fun, except for the may-or-may-not-be-dating bit (which we sort of resolved today but if he wants to he needs to prove it!). We drank a bit and sang Auld Lang Syne to "bees" (bees beees bees bees, bees beeeeees be beees, bees beeeeeeeeees....etc.) By midnight I was sleepy though, I had to dance to stay awake. Was more fun than if I'd just stayed in my hometown though.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

I received one invitation, but it was all the way up in Hackney, and with the transport strike looming, I really didn't fancy it. So I stayed in my lovely new flat, made a giant curry, drank loads of sherry and watched all six hours of To The Ends Of The Earth back to back. That was an excellent idea.

The Lidl Shop Of Horrors (kate), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

i went to the same party as matt dc and ken (and marianna and gareth and rob and andrew and various people i bumped into and various friendsoffriends &c &c) and it was a bit mental but in the best way possible and gareth and i only left at 9am and i am still coping VERY BADLY with being a sentient conscious fully functioning human being.

can we do all that again please.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

went out, got trollied, went to a couple of houses afterwards with army of friends, curled up on chair with ex pornstar. hurrah.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

Had a nice evening out in Glasgow that I like to think could've been just any other Saturday night bar a relatively meaningless ten second countdown at some point followed by some hugs, kisses n' handshakes, and Frank Ferguson loomage. Still hate New Year's Eve though.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

My band played a killer gig and had our first experience in a VIP room - which blew. Some guy in there kept trying to tell us about how he produced a Gina Gershon movie -- who gives a shit? I only drank two beers (dignity pact) and we played a great show, one of the best experiences of my life. Then we got paid loads of scrilla. I kissed my sister at midnight.

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I went to the pub, the barman played "Born to Run" as the last song of 2005, we watched Jools Holland's pre-recorded countdown on the Hootenanny on the telly (first year I think ever that I've been somewhere that didn't use the BBC Scotland coverage of the Edinburgh celebrations), I hugged and kissed my friends that were there, texted a few who weren't, taught a Welsh person how to dance the Gay Gordons and the Dashing White Sergeant, then went round to my next door neighbours and drank until 5 a.m.

It was OK.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

i rarely witness a succesful countdown chant in a pub, this last one was no exception. Everyone started the chant, and everyone was exactly 1 second ahead of the television countdown. morons.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

I totally missed the countdown and the actual New Year and everything, because I was going by the clock on the stove (which was wrong) and by the time I minimised the DVD player, it was already 00:04 and the Refuge Temple next door was going nuts, setting off fireworks and everything.

The Lidl Shop Of Horrors (kate), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Ste: nobody in the pub knew about the leap second?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

or even worse, you get multiple countdowns in the same pub. not that it matters a great deal in life, just, yer know, people should be smarter.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

What do you do when abroad though? I was in a Belgian restaurant. Also present: two British couples.

Midnight: massive countdown!
1 AM: 4-person countdown!

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

I watched the fireworks from a sleet-y rooftop in Queens and kissed people! Then it turned into a hip-hop bump & grind dance party and I went home. How decorous am I?!?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

I was at a friends house eating outrageously evil cheese and drinking port, then going back to mine with some other friends and repeating the process till about 5. Not long after which their 18m old daughter woke up.

My friend ph1l has a story that's hard to beat, however.

He went to a house party somewhere near Crewe with the girl whose house he was staying at. At some point immediately after midnight (he thinks about 10 past), and with both of them having consumed hugely to excess, she decided to inform the hostess that her husband was having an affair with another party guest. Unsurprisingly, they were asked to leave.

In his confused state, ph1l decided they'd better drive home. In her car. Which he wasn't insured for. And didn't know where he was going. Then she passed out before giving any directions.

4 hours into what apparently is about a 15 minute drive they finally gave up, mainly because the car had run out of petrol and he thought filling it up might alert the garage staff to his condition. Luckily this was in an asda car park. Unluckily, it was one used by local doggers.

Apparently, the hostess, her husband and the woman allegedly involved in the affair flew off together on a skiing holiday yesterday so "it all worked out well in the end".

I was throwing up into my in-laws' toilet at midnight. Not the best NYE ever.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

We watched the usual crap on BBC Scotland, went to my in-laws for 'The Bells' (and to drop off the kids) then We went to a mate's house and I sang 'Our House' and 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' on Singstar Karaoke (with my singing the verdict was 'you should definitely FUCKING GO you TUNELESS TIT') then went to see my Mum and Dad and got pissed until about 6am.

After midnight we did a hands-crossed-and-joined rendition of 'Auld Lang Syne' (or the bits of it we knew the words to) and my son's trousers fell down halfway through. I'm adding this to the 'stories to tell future girlfriends' collection.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

I went to sleep early. When I drink with my sister, we usually don't have good times. That was on the 29th. But we do get along. But it would be even better to get along when we drink, not that we don't - it's just that we don't have good times. So best wishes to Mary and her sister!!

The other "Ironic" thing about this telecast is that part of it is in Puerto Rico where everyone lost power today. I know this is all preplanned, not sure if shot already, but they should cut it off because of real life. Acting like nothing is happening even if over half the population don’t even have power right now.
