I met one of my dearest friends 6 years ago through computer stuff online.

Now "e-dating" is definately not as good an idea!

All my friends are internet friends.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

GROUP HUG!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what BBS stands for.

I feel that I'm making some friends through ILE, gradually, so certainly classic.

And there is nothing wrong with internet dating! I've had some great times from that, but I've talked plenty about that here before, so I won't go on about it again on this thread.

people make friends in a variety of ways, making friends on a message board is not stranger than, say, making a friend with someone you've met on the street, as i've done a couple of times

*hug*, DAMMIT!

I *hug* dan, even though he likes b***** m**...and even if he won't let me.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a total classic.

The thing about the internet is, when you're online, you're not you; you're only what you want to reveal of yourself. So you're not fat, thin, tall, short, ugly or pretty; you don't even have to reveal your ethnicity or gender until you feel comfortable doing so. It's a blank page, without all the prejudices that we all carry around- at its most extreme, on the internet you are nothing but your own ideas, opinions, viewpoints and experience. It's a wonderful feeling, and from my experience the deepest friendships that I've had have been net friendships, because you really can't hold any of those small talk relationships that can go on for years in real life; you have to talk about interesting stuff, or people just stop IMing you. As a result, in recent years when I've actually *met* ppl I've known through the internet, it feels like I know them much, much better than any of my real life friends!

(sorry if this sounded horribly pretentious)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yep classic, but i dont know what bbs means either.
i have too much to say in relation to e-dating, so i wont say anything because i dont have time!

donna (donna), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I *hug* dan, even though he likes b***** m**

Dan is a fan of old Arsenal manager Bertie Mee?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

if b***** m***** stands for what I think it does, RJG has deeply hurt me.

ron (ron), Thursday, 5 December 2002 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Baron Muenchausen.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i wasn't completely serious. (more like inferiority complex?)but sometimes i really do feel that way. that section of daniel's post rings so true to how this year has gone for me. during the spring/ summer (online communication was for me still a novelty) i was really enjoying the time spent talking to a lot of different people. much of that talk was not very 'deep' - i don't necessarily see that as a negative, but it may be true that it can't last at that level, i dunno. in any case, that social life has largely dissolved for me, which i regret! and i don't fully understand all the reasons why it has. the main thing is needing to take more initiative in terms of writing to people etc. but challenging in terms of also needing to limit computer time.

(hm, probably better off explaining what i'm really thinking instead of making a jokey, oblique comment, thanks ally)

ron (ron), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my post wasn't aimed at you but it did make you open up so in the end it has caused only good. Like all of my posts, naturally.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

argh, ok :-) but yes, good result in any case,

haha ok i get it now, more b..... m... speculations! d'oh!

ron (ron), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You know I'm going to call you Baron Muenchausen from now on.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ron (ron), Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fo' sheezy.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, esp. when you meet someone in person then realize *after* that you've actually met/conversed online before. That seems to happen to me a lot.

Jen (nstop), Thursday, 5 December 2002 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)
