AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH i just FINALLY got off the phone to a woman who is exceedingly nice but just kept on talking even when i said i had to go!
she ignored that and simply asked another question, another pointless one designed trap me on the phone for an extra 2 minutes.
she isnt lonely, she just doesnt LISTEN!
-me " ok well i must go now, i have a lot to do and my son has just woken up" ( she must have been able to hear him )
-her " oh..and when exactly do you move? "
Nooooooooooooooo!
this went on for ages, til i said " ok, going now, sorry, bye" and hung up.
was that rude?
i think she was more rude.

My friend does not get the message either, he'll be like "I gotta go, I'll talk to you later. Anyway, as I was saying etc. for 20 minutes"

Sometimes you just have to say "Great talking to you, gotta go" and hang up.

a good thing to do that is to hang up on them in the middle of one of your own sentences.

sometimes, in face to face conversations, i put my headphones on. but then i realize the person (it is a specific person) is still talking, and doing it because he just loves the sound of his own voice.

just say you gotta go pee really badly, and can't hold it in any longer.

better still, tell them it's too late and you just peed

my mum's brother and his wife are horrific when it comes to this - for this reason, you must only enter into a conversation with either of them when it is utterly inescapably necessary. they both have this morbid fear of ending conversations, ending visits, bringing social contact to a halt. they are also rabid catholics, i don't know if this is related.

Are you peopel still talking? I really have to leave now. Huh.

I used to have the reverse problem with some co-workers at a previous job; they used to think it was hilarious to unexpectedly end every phone call with anyone else who worked at the store by just speeding up whatever sentence they were saying and yelling "K BYE!" and then hanging up within a second of saying that. You could tell when they were about to do that because they would start hunching over the phone like a vulture in anticipation of the hangup. Maybe this is what you need to implement in order to get rid of those pesky phone clingers.
