Generic Christmas Present Ideas Thread

Here is where you give us all some cheap and useful ideas for Christmas presents that could be given to pretty much anybody - you could specify gender maybe but nothing more specific than that. And this is also the thread where anyone nicking the ideas expresses their undying gratitude.

(This was Tim H's thread idea but he doesn't start threads)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Shredded paper. Hours of fun for a guinea pig or other small rodent.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Picture frames, possibly with pictures of yourself in them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Pictures of yourself. Poster size.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Candles.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

A brace of pheasant. Always appreciated by all ages.

alix (alix), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

home made shallot marmalade (its dead easy)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

you need to go into them hippy type shops and look for stuff, candles is usually what i rely on. Or sand-pictures.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shallots.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this like a thread for Kris Kindle presents for people you work with?

Kris Kindle presents are weird... it's almost like you are obliged to give people shite.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

damit i was going to say candles and picture frames! i have a Secret Santa and i have no idea what to get, so those were my ideas. i suppose also: nice olive oil, posh pickles/olives, nice organic spices (hmm i can't think of anything not food related!)...

um...

a plant? or BOUZE.

katie (katie), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

What's Kris Kindle, DV?

Katie, I find the Gadget Shop to be the ideal place for Secret Santa pressies. The key with secret santa is always to take the goofy option. No-one is expecting anything *really* decent, and there's generally not enough cash to buy anything classy, so a cheap laugh is a good choice.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It wasnt really for secret santa stuff.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

If anyone got me candles or picture frames I would be mildly pissed off. Bouze OTOH is always a good option.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason I started this thread is because it occurred to me that the reggae lover in your life is likely to be very pleased with "The Studio 1 Story", a nicely put-together DVD / CD / book package on Soul Jazz. Haven't watched the DVD yet but it would make a fine present (cost = about £17).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris Kindle = Kris Kringle = Secret Santa.

Book tokens. If they don't like book tokens, how about a lethal injection of detergent?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Isotoner gloves.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

And Harry & David fruit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Micropets!!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

a bottle of wine.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

HMV Gift Certificates = all-purpose gift from the Gods.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Book tokens, even better than HMV vouchers if you ask me.

Whisky.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn. I was hoping ducklingmonster might have written something, as there is a birthday and xmas coming up (hint hint) but plants or booze, well, neither can fail.

isadora (isadora), Thursday, 5 December 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Booze-filled plants. In a picture frame.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Prettily lit up with candles.

Celeste (Celeste), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

food, photo albums, goldfish, gift vouchers, calendars.

donna (donna), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Poison's greatest hits

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I read with much interest as I am secret santa-ing one person on this thread and being secret santa-ed by another. Things from over-prized kitsch tat emporiums (emporia?) always go down a treat, I find. Or booze. Or books. Or a nice crisp tenner.

Madeleine (Madeleine), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to buy a secret santa thing at work. Last year it was for a guy who I barely knew, but he was a project manager so I wrapped this book and labelled it as the division's new project management manual. It was 'How to make your dreams come true with FENG SHUI ASTROLOGY', which produced some amusement.

This year I have another guy who's not been with us long and I hardly know, who is another team manager. I am tempted by the 'New Age' section (if I were in charge I'd label it 'Drivel') of the discount bookstore again.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Several of my friends are chocoholics. Last year I spent ages typing out chocolate recipes from various Celebrity Chefs, then I printed them out onto decorated paper and put them in nice files. I packaged them up with bags of home made chocolates and fudge, and gold coloured plastic teaspoons which I had dipped in chocolate/Kahlua (for stirring into your coffee). All very cheap and cheerful, but well received nonetheless.

I still have the sleb choc recipes in a Word document and will happily send it on to anyone who might want it. It's about 50 A4 pages.

C J (C J), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love some booze for christmas, seriously. I mean just once in my life to have a bottle of vodka or a crate of beer which wasn't bought for a specific occasion, it would be amazing.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

A handful of change. It's more exciting than cash because it takes longer to count up.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ch-ch-ch-chia!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 6 December 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed - recipe for said shallot marmalade, please?

Ellie (Ellie), Friday, 6 December 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Ceramic hair straighteners are cheap of you are well off and will transform the recipient's life.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

of = if

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

They're seem to be suddenly lots of shaver adverts on the TV now, don't they. Aren't shavers a too much about personal preference to give as presents?

Graham (graham), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing like a shaver to say "i prefer you w/o a beard, my darling"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

A dead baby

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

You can get some nice wines for cheap, a bottle of wine is always nice.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

A handful of change. It's more exciting than cash because it takes longer to count up.

Every Christmas my sister and I get to make like Scrooge McDuck with a great big box full of change that my grandparents have saved up all year. We spend Boxing Day counting cash and January trying to persuade shops to let us pay with a handful of pennies.

Don't you love the way the ILX Machine picks out the errors of your html ways?
