Duane has those! Yum.

I never associated these with Christmas, particularly. They are the last thing on the shelf in one of the aisles of my local Sainsburys and as a result I've often been standing right by them in the queue and have been curious. Close inspection revealed the jar to be brown and almost opaque, like that of Marmite. Closer inspection revealed the jars to have white bits inside, which are presumably the walnuts themselves. Unfortunately, it all reminds me rather too much of the pickled animals and body parts in formaldehyde on the back shelves of laboratories. Maybe they are not selling too well and the wily supermarket staff have placed them in this prime location to enable people's curiosity to get the better of them. Doubt if it will work for me.

My sister could potentially pickle walnuts as she has walnut trees in her garden. I've seen some of the walnuts from it - they look a tad small and manky.

Christmas mince pies are "the shit" as the young folks of today say.

gazza, Friday, 6 December 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't imagine that pickling walnuts improves them, they are so delicious as they are. But roast chestnuts are even better! And Christmas pudding and mince pies and roast potatoes and Terry's chocolate orange and... all of it really. (Not goose fat though.) Oh look I seem to back on my food again. Hurrah!

Archel (Archel), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, roast chestnuts might be a cliché, but they are best. I've been lucky enough to have always had a family home with an open fire, I can do it all myself.

Christmas food is great cause I wouldn't want to be eating mincemeat and fruitcake much more than once a year.

Satsumas used to be the most evocative Christmas smell but now they're in supermarkets all year bah.

Mouldy cheese is the bees knees. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, stilton. With fruitcake if you know what's good for you.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I like mouldy cheese, it's the bees knees I hate. Are you from Yorkshire btw, Madchen?
