gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 December 2002 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is it exactly? Is it just near the canal? I think I recall seeing a Russian 'pub' or bar just there. Not been in it though.

David (David), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

just south of the canal, on the west side, by, um, orsman st? i think its yellow, but memorys a bit hazy

i've walked past it dozens of times, but i'm shit scared of it. i mean, those PAINTINGS of carousing animals on the outside of it. scary as fuck.

Someone I know hired it for an event and it turned out to be double-booked with a Russian birthday party. They tried to combine turntablism with a Russian family gathering but had to make some serious concessions when they clocked the looks that some of the hard as nails Russian men were giving their choice of music. I think they scarpered after a while.

clocked... hard as nails... scarpered

N., have you turned into a cockerney geezer pearly king since you moved up to Glasgow? Maybe you have been hanging out with Gav too much...

It's the same old ex-pat story. Leave your homeland, cling to an outdated parody of its culture. Irish Americans etc.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it is much better than the spanish bar

gareth (gareth), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Pissing yourself is better than the Spanish Bar.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the late night 'jazz cafe' just off Kingsland Road?

I like the Spanish Bar, btw.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the irish bar upstairs from the spanish bar...

Heh heh, Nick gone Cockney. Do you think I talked this Noo Yawk when I still lived there? Nah, I was as British as Damon Albarn. (this is indeed open to interpretation...)

one year passes...
ended up there on friday night, baggy suits, ostentatious moustaches, hardman stares, barmaids struggling with english, 12.5% baltikas, couple hoxtonites showed up later on, but mainly east europeans, dre and snoop rather than east euro trance though this time.

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 8 February 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh Fraser, Gill and I ended up at Paradox on Westfield St - some fit birds there but didn't get anywhere - they went and stole someone's Merc while i crashed out in a ditch

three months pass...
there is something about this thread that I really quite love a lot.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i am ready for Russia. i hope they love their boozy children too.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

?! u are going to russia then steve?

so, when are we going to 'Nu, Pogodi!' (for that is its name) next time then?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not that bad as places on kingsland road go, have ended up there a few times. there's a russian supermarket at the top of my road. in ther interest of culinary adventurousness i went and bought a ton of food there yesterday. i don't know what any of it is bevcaue the people in there speak very, very bad english. let's just say it involves sausages and great black bread.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

aw man some kind of bread/black pudding fusion i hope

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly no, but the sausages are fucking massive, you know the ones, tied in a loop, but about the size and shape of a toilet seat. the bread is amazing and they do wicked polish beer, too.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

is this place in a basement and really small? i've been to a dodgy after-hours russian boozer in that area, but i thought it was on (or just off) leonard st. lots of russian posters on the walls, russian bouze, and the dj played dub and reggae when i was there.

i am usually quite pissed when i've been there, so i may not be totally accurate here...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the phrase "ostentatious moustaches" - its got a great rhythm to it.

I went to a Spanish bar on Kingsland Road not long ago. It was upstairs though, and much bigger. They were playing Monstertruckdriver as we went in and I got very excited. Everyone there was Spanish except us.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

no it's on kingsland road. where is this other one?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I need a new toliet seat... Dave can you give me the address please?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i just figured it out - it's on ravey st off of leonard. called 'swersh':
http://www.fluidfoundation.com/venueDetails.asp?BarRef=1909

not really a 'russian' bar, then. just a lot of communist/eastern bloc imagery'n'shit...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought that might be it. nah it's not russian and it's not dodgy

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ravey street

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

swersh=smersh, right?
