Genet redone as soap opera.

Dorothy had those ruby slippers on all the time, she could have got home when she liked.

The only major cultural artifact which is allowed to get away with "And then I woke up" as the underlying plot dynamic.

Pete, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mean the hot prison fuckfest on HBO.

anthony, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know, but I mean the books by Frank Baum and the seminal Judy Garland movie. Let the thread decide....

Pete, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Marvellous Land of Oz is better than The Wizard, because it has THE GUMP.

Tom, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its my mofo thread dammit ! Everyone mutates my threads. *stomps his feet , pouts *

anthony, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Anthony, I've not seen this hot prison fuckfest you speak of. But I bet it doesn't have a flying sofa with the head of a moose.

BONUS MARVELLOUS LAND POINT! Is the wicked witch in it not called MUMBA??

Tom, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Return To Oz the movie. Faruka Balk -hmm - in an eight year old way. No songs though, but it is distinctly dark. But bizarre if all you know of Oz is the Wiz.

Pete, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

genet was australian?

ten months pass...
"The Wizard of Oz" (singalong subtitle version) is on right now. The scene where Dorothy and the Scarecrow oil the Tin Woodsman and then he is very relieved is incredibly senusual. Now I am scare because they have just encountered the Cowardly Lion and he hasn't turned friendly yet.

(I love how the ILE contrarians insist on confounding anthony by posting all their L. Frank Baum/MGM film- related comments here and all their prison drama comments under the "WIZARD OF OZ" thread.)

felicity, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Oz" the HBO show is regularly disturbing and unsettling.

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oz from Buffy = num num. We would make a great couple. What with him being a werewolf and I being a banshee.

Sarah, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you look at the dates for both threads you will see a pattern emerge. Thread mutations are wonderful things though, doesn't seem to happen as much as it used to in the salad days of ILE.

Is there much compare'n'contrast work betwixt Narnia and OZ as they both seemed relatively similar in their genesis - and both ostentatiously spinning out of their respective cultures (Narnia is sooo English, and Oz soooo 'Merican).

OMG season 1 of OZ is, imo, the best single season in television history. Holy shit, I wish I could watch it for the first time all over again.

kate moss and heavy machinery in a dessert (Stevie D), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

hey, two guys from "oz" were on "fringe" last night. that was neat.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

How did it take you so long??? I finished it in like 3 days. Was it not one of the best-edited television seasons you've ever seen?? and OH MY GOD, THAT CLIMAX!!!!

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

whose climax?

DON'T BE CRASS.

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

this is a tv show about men in prison with sex and full frontal nudity - crassness is definitely not out of place.

sarahel, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

last night i watched s6e6 and cried like a freaking baby.

tehresa, Friday, 5 February 2010 08:29 (sixteen years ago)

*SPOILERS*

the whole mentally retarded persons being held liable for crimes thing really got to me because i have a cousin with downs who is 18 now and has been "running away" and getting brought home by the police who find him when he does so for his whole life, and who doesn't understand what is appropriate behavior and what is not, and who regularly gets kicked out of school for inappropriate behavior, and who should be in a group home by now but isn't because of ridiculous circumstances/opinions of people close to him that don't really get what's best for him and just (@#*%. that episode *really* fucked with me. when he was 13 or so he set my grandparents' house on fire without realizing what he'd done, and even though i know he is a good kid at heart, i don't think it's extraordinary to think that one day he could do something really horrible without really comprehending what he's done and the idea that people can be executed for that is just so heartbreaking to me.

Two kids, household, shop, we're also watching Homicide as well,... Busy life, dude. :-)
We've put it on hold since the download of S2 was fucked up. :-(

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 5 February 2010 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

you need to show "oz" to kids more than once before they really "get it" ime, but it's totally worth putting the time in.

the highest per-vote vag so far (history mayne), Friday, 5 February 2010 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

how unique & amazing was the incidental music on this show!! i started thinking about it after a ladyrap song just sampled it (check ilm electrik red thread if interested). i remember it seemed jarring and weirdly flamboyant to me at the very beginning but really it was so crucial to like framing everything in soapy pulp, and instantly establishing the vignettey episodic editing rhythm - the horn twirls are like danger, mocking comeuppance, twist!, shank, curtains up/down all at the same time.

haha imagine lost with oz music!! someone so needs to youtube that.

r|t|c, Friday, 5 February 2010 12:31 (sixteen years ago)

maybe not just "soapy pulp" actually - it more kind of underlines the almost theatre-troupey meta thing it all had. (also augustus greek chorus, musical episode, the tv they all watch etc.)

to this end (and i've said this before) the show's weird half-life of oz actors showing up in other stuff all the time and always seeming like alternate versions of their oz characters continues to reward.

r|t|c, Friday, 5 February 2010 12:40 (sixteen years ago)

o'reilly on "30 rock" always made me really nervous.

have such fond memories of the anticipation felt at hearing that initial "urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!" of the oz theme at like 1am or whatever ridic time it used to be on tv

anita bonghit (rionat), Friday, 5 February 2010 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

man remember those days when you could stay up til 3am watching tv and still get up for school the next morning without feeling like you're gonna die

There was an episode of SVU this season where Stabler spends the weekend in solitary, and it's basically Oz-lite.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 5 February 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

I was JUST raving to someone yesterday about how good Oz's incidental music is!! I really should just rewatch the whole thing.

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

Beecher and Keller, together again.

I think SVU is just daring the viewers to write fan fic/slash.

I still think S1 of Oz is the single best season in TV history. This is totally my favorite show. You are in for such a treat.

Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 23 April 2012 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

Wow there are a whole lot of people I had no idea were in this popping up in just the first two eps.

one month passes...

this gets really bad in season 4. the basketball sequence where the sacramento kings scout nods his head after the security guard makes a layup was the worst thing I've ever seen in an HBO series.

It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 6 February 2015 20:45 (eleven years ago)

and the 'twist' concerning beecher's parole. how can this last two more seasons? they should have quit after 3.
