Bah - that was my joke (except I used the UK spelling).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 December 2002 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"maths rocks" doesn't have the same ring to it tho

geeta (geeta), Monday, 9 December 2002 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, actually it would probably be "maths rock", i guess

still it's not as good

geeta (geeta), Monday, 9 December 2002 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway, math stories. i posted a [fake] personal ad once that read "hobbies include: integration, differentiation, listening to merzbow, and drinking windex"

damn that parallel construction!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 9 December 2002 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

But did you get any response? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a grebt proof of this claim but the margin is not big enuff to contain it

mark s (mark s), Monday, 9 December 2002 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

maths 0Wnz j00

DG (D_To_The_G), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

triple large sparse matrix multiplications in efficient parallel computation... rocks. not elegant, like integration/differentiation, but a brutal black-metal type of rock.

cprek, Monday, 9 December 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, actually it would probably be "maths rock", i guess

No, it wouldn't. We're very free with our grammar over here when it comes to plurals. We'd never say 'Sum 41 is set to set your pants alight' either.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah!

I didn't even notice the twin set!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I was actually a math major for a semester in undergrad. Well, technically I was a math major for the whole year but I only did music and English courses in the second semester. Statistics to be exact. I was a biology major the previous year.

We've already discussed that in this here bitch.

sixteen years pass...

they say :

MATHEMATICS INVOLVES THE DESCRIPTION AND MANIPULATION OF ABSTRACT OBJECTS THAT CONSIST OF EITHER ABSTRACTIONS FROM NATURE OR—IN MODERN MATHEMATICS—PURELY ABSTRACT ENTITIES THAT ARE STIPULATED TO HAVE CERTAIN PROPERTIES, CALLED AXIOMS. MATHEMATICS USES PURE REASON TO PROVE PROPERTIES OF OBJECTS, A PROOF CONSISTING OF A SUCCESSION OF APPLICATIONS OF DEDUCTIVE RULES TO ALREADY ESTABLISHED RESULTS. THESE RESULTS INCLUDE PREVIOUSLY PROVED THEOREMS, AXIOMS, AND—IN CASE OF ABSTRACTION FROM NATURE—SOME BASIC PROPERTIES THAT ARE CONSIDERED TRUE STARTING POINTS OF THE THEORY UNDER CONSIDERATION.
