Office Moves

As mentioned elsewhere, we are moving out of our current building on Christmas Eve and into the brand new one in the New Year.

Tell me about office moves you've made. Did they go smoothly? Did they lose anything?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 December 2002 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've made three moves in two and a half years, the last one RoXoR for me, as I now only work 10 minutes from home! Moving is fun, I usually get to plan out the area. Measure up all the book shelves and desks and all that, and spend ages rearranging my cut outs on a floor plan.

ow!

that's the sound of a nerver being touched.

meant to be moving offices this friday. which puts the kibosh on me taking the second half of december as holiday. and i got in this morning to find that the location on the other side of london that was all agreed last week has been ruled out and now the only alternative seems to be...

(pause for effect)

...southampton!

that's me out of a job then...

I've just been told I'm moving office on 13th January, which is the the week I wanna take off on leave. It's a conspiracy I tell ya!

smee (smee), Monday, 9 December 2002 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, it's infectious!

I am in the opposite situation from Jel. I always wanted to walk to work and when I got this job two and a bit years ago I finally got my wish. The walk is a pleasant one which takes me across a nature park and along by a river. But now we're moving to a business park 20+ minutes away by bus and I have to walk into the centre of Oxford to get on the bus.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 December 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooo are you moving to the *snigger* 'Science Park', Mark? Happy happy joy joy.

Poor Koogs. I take it Southampton doesn't appeal...? There's lots of moving of offices going on in the building, but luckily my section isn't going anywhere. That's not only literal but also figurative.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no, but I'm moving to the equally dire Business Park. In the shadow of Rover, rather than the Kassam Stadium.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 December 2002 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon after I started this job, we moved to a new office. The moving itself was a bit of a pain as it involved moving lots of computers and files, but the new office was/is brand spanking new and I have a WINDOW and lots more space to take walking trips to the copier in.

I'm switching offices again at the end of the year with my boss but the rest of the people we work with don't know about it yet. So our moving will probably be some sort of undercover operation.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

we are moving even further out of london. ever westwards...

gareth (gareth), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this would be a thread about break-dancing at work.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what moves do you bust at work dan?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Waaa we moved from our beautiful Wh1t3h4ll Place East building, which overlooked the police stables at Old Scotland Yard and HORSE, to the desolate wasteland of M1llb4nk bah chiz. OK so we have a building that actually looks vaguely modern on the inside and a fancy canteen but *sniffs*! Lambeth Bridge is nothing compared to the joy of Hungerford bridge! And park lunches!! Never more, never more.

Ah well. My bus stops right outside the building I suppose and it's closer to home... but NOT CLOSER TO ANYTHING ELSE bah bah bah *stomps feet*

Open plan eh. BAH. I miss our old office and messing about with ECWM. Which really says something cos it was crap back then as well but ah well n'er mind.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 December 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah - did you see the bus hit tha tree last week?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry you'll be nearer to the Paviours Arms, which can only be a good thing.

Koogy you'll be nearer to ... errr... France. I like France but that sounds like a sour deal.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been known to helicopter while waiting for code to compile. (This may not be true.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete - I get that bus route every morning! And yes I did see it, bloody hell. I got a later bus that morning, and it diverted along the south bank causing me no end of gripes, until I finally crossed Lambeth Bridge and thought I saw a broken down open top tourist bus... but nope... roof totally sliced off the top of the 3. It looked such a clean smash as well. This were right outside my building.

You like the Paviours Arms eh Tim?? That's a somewhat infamous pub round these ways - I can't think that I've ever been there myself though...

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be a thread about sexxing yr co-workers.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Paviours rox. On the zig zag pub crawl fersure.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Paviours = best pub in SW1, no question (unless it's not in SW1, which I think it is). It's a few doors down from that wacky place which does the Star Trek theme nights.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what moves do you bust at work mark p?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There's noone bustable!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

He should be in work attire!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha Paul, EXACTLY.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 December 2002 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The corporate office of my company just knocked out all the cubes in the dead center of the office and placed another conference room there. It's really bizarre. I mean, a) with all these lay offs and firings WHO are we conferencing with? b) IN THE DEAD CENTER OF THE OFFICE, WE BUILT A ROOM? What does it even imply?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 9 December 2002 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's important to have the conference room in the middle of the office - that's where ours is. That way, if there's some super important meeting going on and the building is attacked by terrorists, the terrorists will first encounter the regular office folk and - of course -kill them. This will buy a little time for the people in the conference room to have a longer meeting of great importance before they are killed too (or maybe they'll have time to barricade their door).

erik, Monday, 9 December 2002 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's cute.
But I hope that worker isn't hanging him/herself.
Because that wouldn't be cute.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 December 2002 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be cute if the worker was wearing bunny ears.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 December 2002 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

he wears a funny hat (not on the picture)

erik, Monday, 9 December 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
well, the move is complete! The remarkable thing is that the only thing that was lost en route is the little plastic holder with my name in it that used to sit atop one of my monitors. That's ok: I'm happy with ppl not knowing who I am, speshly as the only person from outside the dept. who needed to know was the HR bod who handed out the payslips and this function has now been outsourced so that they're sent through the mail.

There were a few technical difficulties to iron out however, like all my favorites being lost from IE on my Windows NT machine, disappearing macros ect ect, which is why I only posted once yesterday and have prolly dropped off the end of the statscock.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I switch offices today! My boss said I have to move discreetly because he doesn't want anyone to notice we're moving. Ha ha. That will be interesting. But also he said I could wear jeans and tennis shoes today. Woo hoo! First casual day in over a year with this job! So wish me luck as I discreetly move a bajillion files - AND my computer - out to the car and over to the other office. And I'm sure no one will notice that I'm wearing jeans. One time I changed clothes in the office at 5pm b/c I was playing a show out of town and needed to hit the road and the people in the office were totally shocked to see me wearing my normal clothes for like 2 minutes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you should come and work here. Every day is dress down day. I can't recall anyone getting in trouble for dressing inappropriately, although the guy who wore the "Work Sucks" T-shirt wasn't too popular.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm... Maybe I should turn up here on Friday in my 'Slacker' T-Shirt.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the big news here is that they've turned on the Water Feature!!! Right outside the front entrance, the water spurts out periodically and the lights flash all different colours. It is surrounded by decking. Rumours that Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh had a hand in our new place's design have yet to be denied. My colleague has just commented that it "looks like a latrine".
