A case against free webmail addresses: I just got this in my inbox. It came with colour photos of penes being forced down the orifices of teenaged girls. I don't know why I'm posting other than out of a sense of disgust and frustration.

A few employees at my workplace get spam like this because we once made their e-mail addresses public on the company website. And it's absolutely embarrassing, because sometimes I have to access these employees' inboxes for whatever work-related reason, and this spam is there and there's nothing I can do about it. I don't want these folks to believe that *I* think they're a bunch of perverts for being sent this shit, but I also don't want to say anything about these e-mails either, not even out of commiseration for the poor schlep who got them, because even to acknowledge these e-mails exist is just too AWKWARD.

I don't tend to get ra*e spam as much as I get underaged girl spam, and in spite of all the hours I've spent in AOL chat rooms, I still far more straight-identified spam (or bogus IM messages) than I do gay-identified ones.

I just love how some spam is totally innocuous, even looking like non-spam, until you open it in a public area and see

"HOT XXX SLUT ACTION" or some such with glaring lurid photos. I know I erase email I actually want sometimes because I'm afraid to open it.

If you have a website and use S1te M3t3r and have given them an email address I am pretty sure you'll start getting these things - they seem to have sold their lists on to some dodgy customers, or to people who have resold them, etc etc. but a S1te M3t3r account is the common link - I've used addresses for them I've used nowhere else online and those addresses get this spam in much greater proportions than my ILX one does.

Since I've been added to our web directory corrections email group, I get loads of spam at work, including plenty of porn stuff. And the African civil servants who want to pass millions through my bank account, and have carefully chosen me, Mr Directory-Corrections, as a trustworthy person.
