I can't find any nice shirts, I mean shirts with collars. I always wear t-shirts because I own only 2 nice shirts, they are short sleeved and non shiny. Why is it so fucking hard to buy a shirt which is not disgusting and shiny, they all look like they should be worn with huge black shoes and skintight black jeans.

Also long sleeve or short sleeve? I personally prefer short.

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I empathise. Perhaps shirts are only meant for certain people. I used to wear short-sleeved shirts, but now I wouldn't go near them. There indeed only seem to be shiny shirts, white shirts, and an awful lot of BLUE shirts for the office and the country public house.

My real bugbear is trousers, though. You can't find good trousers anywhere anymore.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't laugh, but Marks & Spencer. Lots of good (matte) shirts. Very much NOT 'sharp'. Also vintage type shops I guess for hawaiian/bowling style short sleeved ones.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

shirts r dumb

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You try being a BURD and trying to wear a shirt! (I'm sorry but I can't type the word blouse more than once due to a mental deficiency which makes me find that word hilarious). If they fit in the arms, then they don't fit round the BUST, if they fit round the bust, the sleeves are too short - GRR I ph34r I will never find a shirt that fits me.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"I personally prefer short."

Me too. I have two very nice short-sleeved shirts. The rest of my shirts are only ok, but not "disgusting" either. I've never had difficulty finding shirts i like. Any short-sleeved shirt which isn't some hideous colour will do me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, I can't stand guys who dress up to go out by putting on shirts. It just seems really boring and seems to be a signifier for "having made an effort", rather than actually making an effort. And it hardly ever looks good anyway.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Mm I thought Marks and Spencer or somewhere is probably the best bet, I must go along this week. I also need new trainers but that's a whole other nightmare where I'll just buy plain white converse ones again which cost too much.

I want the normal shirts cos I don't really have non going out clothes or very dressed up going out clothes, just an eternal middleground.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I like wearing shirts and no-one has ever accused me of making an effort with my appearance.

Archel is OTM, also Uniqlo is pretty decent for shirts, but I may be being a trifle London-centric.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with you there 100%, graham. plus, shirts r dumb. especially if they are BRIGHT orange or BRIGHT green. like, eww.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A gentleman of my acquaintance has bought some rather handsome shirts in Zara. There isn't one in Dublin but you could stock up the next time you're in London - there's one right next to the H&M on Oxford Circus!

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard Zara shirts only look good on thin men.

I have Starry's problem. If I wear a shirt I have to safety-pin it together over my boobs to stop it gaping between the buttons.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Miaow.

Can I mention that River Island should be avoided at all costs?

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them Gap dark blue ones - they're non-shiny enough and kind of casual enough not to look like you're making an effort. You can prolly get them in other colours.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

In my selfless quest to 'Find a Shirt for Ronan' I forgot all about myself. That won’t happen agin let me tell you…

Shirts are possibly the *most* unattractive garment a woman can wear. Especially those starchy, cotton ones. They crease in an unbecoming fashion across the waist-line when you sit down and they always gape across the cleavage. I will only wear a shirt in the most dire moment of need.

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The other girls are right, on occasions I have been known to stand chatting to my boss then turn to leave his office, look down and realise that the mighty strain being placed on my shirt buttons has proved too much and one has popped open. Shirts are rubbish. And you have to iron them.

Emma, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

madchen, those trousers you made a [czech='70s] joke about are from zara.

my favourite ever shirt is going through at the elbows----I will never find another like it. : (

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, I can't stand guys who dress up to go out by putting on shirts. It just seems really boring and seems to be a signifier for "having made an effort", rather than actually making an effort.

But... but... you don't HAVE to be remotely imaginative or actually make an effort in order to look like you've made an effort. That's one of the great things about being a bloke! Case in point, every bloke dressed identically at the Oscars.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i've only worn a dinner jacket/tux once in my life ever, and thats starting to piss me off now...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

B..but what about pretending to be foxy 1940's film noir bird? You need a shirt for that.

(You could just ignore me, when I'm not wearing identical clothes to my mates I get dressed in some kind of fantasy land)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not a "bloke". I also live in a fantasy land.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna - only if the material is crease free. Or you are wearing industrial underwear.

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Now where can you get a nice shirt with a detatchable collar? That's what I'd like to know. Thomas Pink used to sell them but, alas, no more.

Gordon (Gordon), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The world's gone mad!

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

they should do clip-on shirts. like yo get clip-on ties & bow ties, you should get fake shirts that clip inside your jacket. that would be awesome*.

*yes, i live in a fantasy world, too.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

But there'd be no *warmth*.

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite shirts are my bright-orange one and my electric lime-green one.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it actually electric?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That'd be warm.

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's electric when I put it on.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i ate an electric lime once. it had a shocking taste.

yes, kill me. go on. do it.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

shirts with collars and buttons = ACE. (see preppy gone bad thread...)

our drummer has a near legendary collection of shirts, all of them amazing. he gets them all over the world, every time we tour, he has to go shopping for sharp shirts.

i like cowboy shirts, myself, but MY GOD is it hard to get them for girls. they never fit in the bust. i mean, where does freaking DOLLY PARTON get her shirts made? honestly...

lately, i've been favouring the psuedo-silk stripey shirts from africa as found in the hoxton market for about £1 each.

kate, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is it so fucking hard to buy a shirt which is not disgusting and shiny

Because there's an entire industry & structure making decisions as to what the non-rich punters are going to have to choose from - somebody, somewhere, decides what your options are going to be 'this season' or some such shite.
You have to keep an eye out for a window of opportunity, then jump through it - eg for what seemed like at least 15 years the only shirts readily available were basic white, light blue, and some horrible insipid 'pastel' colours - then about 4 yrs ago the High St chains were all temporarily full of dark blues/reds/greens. I promptly grabbed my opportunity, and over a period of months bought about 20 shirts in these various darker hues. Of course the frequency at which I actually use them probably means I'll be wearing one for the first time inside the lidded box as it's lowered/incinerated.....

And I'm still waiting for somebody somewhere to decide that ties can go back to:
(a) plain colours with no textures/patterns/cartoon characters
(b) less than 3-4 inches wide, without putting you into C&W bootlace or Mod revival territory.

(Another bugbear - trying to get men's overcoats/raincoats that are longer than knee-length. You have to get those 'Aussie Outback' dust sheet things that make you look stupid if you're less than 6'2", or go Army Surplus (which is fine, but not smart enough for certain occasions).
If you're quite well-off, you can probably find lovely long black overcoats at Swankers or Tufti or whatever - but High St Punter Scum can usually just forget it....
(haha I actually found one from 'Next' in winter 97-98, and thus bought 2 as insurance while they were around. Clothes storing as squirrelly behaviour...)

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got loads of shirts. You can sometimes find good ones in TX Maxx amongst the garish shiny no-no's.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a great shirt

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

stripey shirts = cool.

i was suprised to find them even at H&M. it's like, when shoegazers grow up, they flip their stripes vertical and add collars.

mod revival ties = THE BEST KIND POSSIBLE!!! I inherited a whole collection from my father, many of them in amazing Liberty print floral/paisley/psychedelic patterns.

kate, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Colours like 'Fern' and 'Twilight Blue' are not going to attract Ronan, methinks. Am I wrong?

Lara, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

stripey shirts = cool. i was suprised to find them even at H&M

my scarf is stripey (not tripey like i originally typed) and from H&M. dark blue and dark red and light blue and ickle white stripes. ie. fantastic.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

when shoegazers grow up, they flip their stripes vertical and add collars.

Is this a rip on me? Its true.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

no, chris, it was actually a rip on myself...

oh, and paisley shirts, a la steve kilbey on the cover of Heyday. i found the last vestiges of my collection of purple and green paisley button-downs when i unpacked. mmmmmmm.

sing along with donovan... i like my shirt, i like my shirt, i liiike my shirt...

kate, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish girls' shirts came the same way boys' do; with neck and arm measurements, tho we should get bust measurement too for optimal tailoring. I am too tall and skinny and have monkey arms; always 3" of arm hanging out from shirtsleeve.

Kiplings Kim has nice shirts

kate, Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, so does this mean you all often walk around without shirts on!?

Dan I., Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I love shirts. The problem is, these days all of the designs and cuts have been fannied around with so much that most of them are completely unappealing. Occasionally I find a nice subdued paisley short sleeve shirt and I wear it til it falls off.

Black shirts, dark blue shirts, those work for me...

Or, judging by present options, a Circus Clown.

(I think Ned implies that turkey might benefit from one too)

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 12 December 2002 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Shirt today actually. Um and it doesn't gape or crease and it's a lovely inky purple colour and it was only £2 from Camden Market.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummm, what exactly is a "shiney" shirt? I am now paranoid that the shirts I wear might be "shiney."

I wear only solid-coloured shirts (esp green, which I have mulitple shades of).
