Help me design a flyer for my label.

I wasn't going to ask on here (as it's cheating y'know) but I'm all blanked out and I need some suggestions. So, me and some friends from Manchester are setting up a record label. It's called Affect Records. Is this a shit name? I need to design flyers to print out at work tomorrow - I finish my job on friday and am not willing to pay a proper shop to print my stuff.

I need help on how to design a decent flyer that will attract the new Sexus. We're based in the North-West, Manc - Liverpool and the scrotey little suburbs in between. I want to avoid any of the baggage associated with this area, no nod to baggy; 60s beat groups or Joy Division. I know the most important thing about a label is establishing a niche so lets say I'm aiming for sparkly well-dressed erudite pop, preferably without guitars. How can I sum all this up in a few mean phrases without sounding shit?

Also, if anyone has a cute little picture of anything that would look good in the corner of this flyer then please please please give a link.

Kate's always hitting the street for modelling jobs. i think she's free. hope this helps.

doom-e, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Ian, I'm not sure if you'll think it's any good but I found a v.nice image the other day. I shall mail it to you because I am lame at posting images on the interwebnet.

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh great. Doom-e. All I need now is some waffle about Casablanca's arse and I'll be the proud owner of a stone dead thread.

Cheers James, I'll check it now. I think you should post to the Shirt thread, btw. There're people claiming that t-shirts are the only way!

*ignores in order that it might go away*

Ok, just found out that Affectrecords.com has gone. Some show-off american kid with a fancy site has nabbed it so I need a new name. Any offers? And is 'New School Of Pretension' really better than 'Affect'? Is it?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the more you ignore me, the closer i get...

kate, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

That's really fucking creepy you know?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, I physically shuddered when I read that. So don't.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i find it really hard to believe that a person who comes from MANCHESTER, who has pretentions of starting a label for "well-dressed erudite pop" would not recognise a morrissey quote when you read one.

you know what? do your own work and your own research instead of trying to get ile to do it for you. hire a fucking artist. show some originality. don't just take cheap shots at other posters for daring to be flippant on YOUR THREAD.

kate, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I don't think Affect is too bad as a name. One word is a good length for the name of a record label and Affect is better than ie Mute, Nude, Food etc etc etc

(Though I think you should be aiming a little higher than looking for 'the new Sexus')

(Haha but if you DO find the new Sexus, please tell me)

(ps Kate, this IS his own research)

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

(pps Morrissey has never been well dressed)

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

FITE/FUCK

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the logo should be a cartoon butt

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the label should be a rotating ian spack head or a rotating julian casablancas ass. same diff.

doom-e, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

a spinning javine head would rule.

hope this helps.

doom-e, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't use Affect. Everyone will pronounce it in the verb way, which would make the label name an awkward verb phrase, "Affect Records," which prompts the question of what will affect them and how. And then some people will go around using it in the noun-y way, like "Affect Records" in terms of emotional and cognitive state, and they'll either be pedantic about it with other people or they'll say it that way thinking they're right but then worrying that other people, who are all wrong, will nonetheless think they're wrong so long as the issue isn't addressed.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

For this reason I think Effect would be clearer! Obviously if you did any IDM you'd be obligated to make it "Ephexkt."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

pps Morrissey has never been well dressed

That is so blatantly untrue as to be absurd. The outfit worn on the inside of The Queen Is Dead featured a Body Map top, designed by David Holah, one of Leigh Bowery's mates. In late 1985, when this was shot, was absolute Hyper Hyper height of fashion! Morrissey also did the big-E Levi's fetish *years* before others, and was rumoured to have been asked to do catwalk for Comme des Garçons in the same kind of time frame.

Although it has to be said: my friend went to Beverly Hills to interview Marilyn Manson and Morrissey was at the hotel wearing nothing but a tan and some horrible Speedos. My friend was unhappy about the Speedos, very unhappy.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I would call it javine recordings. people will tie it into pop rivals and think that they are buying the star's recordings!

hope this helps.

But none of this suggests even for a second that Morrissey is well-dressed!

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

if it's idm it could be japhxne

doom-e, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow.

*blinks*

I umm, got the Moz ref. BUT ANYWAY

Well secretly I want the new OMD but I'll settle for Sexus. I dunno if to take affectrecords.co.uk and risk chumps mixing it up with the .com one.

Pin, suggest some more Eno-y wordy words for me. New School Of Pretension is growing on me but Pretension is a bit of a rubbish word.

I don't like Stephen Patrick's dress sense at all. Bare chest and flowery shirt? Ugh.

Nabisco, I like how Affect will confound people. I also like how Affect will be near the top of the alphabetical list of labels, which means people will see it first on a list. And that's gotta be good right? Effect makes me think of Special Effects which is a bit pap.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

the new OMD is Other People's Children. go here

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

how's about Ahfeckoff Records? Sounds vaguely...maybe not.

Betcha the .com won't be taken though.

not terribly helpful, Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

re: OPC. That Transatlantic song is pretty good, nice synthsound but his singing is a bit feeble. Not so keen on the other track on the site - is that a FLUTE I hear?! Some of their song titles are well ropey too, 'Mood music' and 'Autumnal Radio Static', erk. I want my OMD to wear fitted suits and sound like Enola Gay 14 times.

I could always use Ahfeckoff Records if I was gonna make the ultra-northern alternative to Affect, and stick these guys on it. Don't think I will though.

Moz doesn't look half bad there actually, though he is with fowl and it looks a bit like he's wearing one of those awful frilly shirts.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a great photo of madonna dancing at the hacienda
before she was famous. it's black and white and i always
thought it would make a great flyer. either way it's
*surely* time somebody revived situationist slogans
for flyers, so how's about

"underneath the pavement: the beach "

always loved that one.

piscesboy, Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

That Madonna pic sounds great, any idea who took it or where I might find it?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 12 December 2002 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

it was taken by kevin cummins in about 1984.
there was a picture of it in that dave haslam (?)
book 'the hacienda must be built'.

piscesboy, Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrissey looks scarily like Peter Gabriel in that turkey pic

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

is Affection Records taken? i think thats sortof better, best to avoid crap puns on it tho e.g. Paffection, Affaction etc.

i had plans to start a label called Audient - i might still do this but the name itself does exist (its an existing label and also a make of mixing desk, bah)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want to be at the top of alphabetical lists, go for Aalto records - then you could use lots of images of buildings by the great architect Alvar Aalto.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

or you could be AAAAARGH and use images of people screaming
