what is your bag like?

i want a new one, and i dont have a mind of my own...

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's from the army surplus store and it cost £5. It's blue.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

its hairy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

had to, sorry!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My purse counts as a bag, right? It's vintage red leather with a big strap- from a second hand store.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

5{ags. One is an Anna Sui *hippie* bag in Jeans material. Or denim? I don't know what to call it - the fabric, I mean, I don't call my bags anything. The other is a Burberry bag. I feel like a bloated Kate Moss when I carry it around town. hah!

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a black handbag I got from Nine West. First I saw it in the US for £90, then I got home and saw it on Kings Road for £120. Then I KICKED MYSELF HARD. Then, a couple of months later I saw it in the sale on Kings Road for £30. And I snapped it right up.

My work bag is horrible. Mum bought it for me to replace the one that was mugged from me. But it's only for work, so it doesn't matter that it's not beautiful.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My bag was given to me free by a music production company. It is green, like my coat. They also gave me two gobstoppers and a mouse pad. Didn't give thm any business, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a lovely new wumminy hand bag briefcase type thing to take to my interview yesterday. I didn't get the job, I blame the bag.

smee (smee), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I use my laptop bag and usually carry a carrier bag round too (not intentionally really). I also have a really knackered old Rough Trade courier bag which I love dearly.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Plastic. Always. I realise it looks shoddy.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, i dont have a bag.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ask Santa for one!

smee (smee), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite bag is purple, it comes from LL Bean and it is full of effects pedals. does that count? they really do last forever. unlike their sleep shippers.

kate, Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ/record bags! always ready to cart tunes around

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I am carrying a silver Gap messenger bag. I have a black smarter bag but that is now

a) messy
b) half broken
c) looks shit if it doesn't lie flat

Other bags I have include:

1. a grey satchel
2. an army canvas bag
3. er
4. a rucksack
5. a black holdall
6. a strange burgundy tres 80s holdall
7. a DUCK bag!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have my £2 army bag, with holes in the bottom.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite bag ever was my TROUBLE record bag, which i got for free at the ad agency where i worked. but then my bassist went to work for trouble, and i had to get rid of it quick...

replaced with a canvas bag that i got on canal st last time i was home, which has so many secret compartments and zippers and things that it is great for smuggling Special into clubs, but i always end up LOSING whatever it is that's important that i need.

kate, Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have one dark blue Timberland rucksack which I got from TK Maxx, and one small grey shoulder bag thing from Top Shop. The idea was to have the smaller, nicer bag for work, but in practice I carry too much shite around with me to make that happen...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought Tom's carrier bag was part of his chic!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i love my bag, which my sister gave to me for my birthday once - it's soft dark denim with some old 70s wallpaper stitched on the front, then covered in plastic to waterproof it. the wallpaper is slightly off white with a scratchy black drawing of a gradually diminishing avenue of trees. sadly it's beginning to disintegrate a bit despite the plastic covering.

minna (minna), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

plastic bag politics are always interesting, like how ppl keep selfridges or waterstones bags as the 'good' bags for reuse etc etc. harrods bags weren't so passay back in tha dizzay. i remember someone getting GUNNED at skool for bringing in a kwiksave bag, we were all too petty then for him to shrug it off but i'm sure the same goes on thru adulthood. i'm quite taken with the red/blue stripey bags from offles or markets but the capacity + strength is minimal... gotta firm it tho, fashion baby.

also those new topshop bags drive my QPR brain mad!! aargh

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Same thing happened at my school Bob! Though I'm not sure if it was a Kwiksave bag.

I bring my CDs to work in a GOSH comic shop bag, and my umbrella is in a Forbidden Planet one.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Is 3 the Afro Keng gym bag Sarah?

I have a orangey red Nike racksack that I've now had for either 6 or 7 whole years. The corners are quite worn, one of the catches is missing but other than that it's in really good condition. I washed it in the sink a couple of weeks ago, and now it really GLOWS. Ignoring the dire warnings about not even getting it wet, let alone using hot water and detergent seems only to have removed most of the Nike logos and done no damage to the fabric itself.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

it is grey with thin da-glo yellow stripes and a Diesel logo (v unlike me). it has a largely useless detachable bit at the side that's like an oversized wallet (with card/pen holders), an odd metal hoop that might be for keys, the usual shoulder strap and two chunky plastic clips to close it (v annoying rattle if you don't fasten them)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mine's from custard downstairs at affleck's
in manc town, and it was just what i always wanted !
it's a denim-y one with a big strap,
and a winking smiley face made out of yellow rubber.

piscesboy, Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing worse than a new clean sports rucksack

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixmag record bag (thanks Anna), it's starting to rip though, but I'll get another few months out of it. At the moment there's an empty A4 pad in it which I don't know why I have and also lots of sheets, I'll now pick one out and see what it says...................................it's a Martin Amos piece called Visiting Mrs Nabokov about how he was nearly involved in a plane crash but was very drunk and took so much valium that he was smug when it happened. But a few days later the shock hit him. That's pretty much the gist of it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

to answer gareth: there are no good bags. they are all exercises in confidence

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OH I knew I had forgotten something haha ie I haf not been to the gym for YONKS.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

it's black, it fits a small paperback book but not a hardcover, it has a black cat face in a red circle and says "emily (tm)" on the front, and i colored one of the cat's eyes in with green pen. there are lots and lots of pockets. it's awesome.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Duck bag"? Can I come round shooting some day?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Current one is my Adidas freebie from Sonar this year. Its blue and has a multitude of useful pockets and also fits my laptop without looking like a laptop bag. My previous bag is my rather incongruous world economic forum bag.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you need to fit in your bag?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a pvc small bag with pictures of duck on it, sadly not one for porting around bleeding mallards!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to get one of those retro Puma ones.

(this goes nicely after Sarah's post)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's brand new!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually I use a black messenger bag with a padded laptop section & lots of small pockets under the flap. I have a white canvas bag with black handles from Lands End for carrying groceries & other random junk on the weekends, but its usefulness is lessened by the lack of a top closure-- important pieces always seem to fall out when I set it down.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Today's bag - black denim record bag from Pankya Records (I'm sure I've said this before, I was sent it, have no idea who or what the label represents - anyone?)

I also have
1) White and green bag with butterflies on (Ktee has the same in red)
2)Black cord shopper
3)Clear plastic with flowers
4)Green canvas thing
5)Squishy small black bag
6)Bottle green crochet and beads affair
7)Dull gold beady thing
8)Beaded evening clutch bag (50p from charity shop)
9)My new favourite bag - an antoni and alison one in a proper handbag shape with the sheet music to Mary Had A Little Lamb on the front.

I think there are many more under my bed.

Why do I feel compelled to list things on here?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you need to fit in your bag?

day to day stuff, a book, mobile, discman, gloves and hat, pad of paper, nothing majorly big

but then perhaps also one to chuck a few clothes in too

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My bag is cloth, dark blue with kind of retro squiggly design in lighter blue and black. It is just the right size for all the crap I cart about. Today I have a random party popper in there. I also have a smaller denim bag with a rainbow coloured strap. It is sturdy. For when I am going away there is a black record bag which I have had since school.

alix (alix), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

a dark blue small canvas rucsac made by vango. it went all around the world with me and is like my own personal tardis (apart from the time-travelling bit). now it mostly carries butties and fruit.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the sound of lyra's bag, my laptop isn't very well protected in my bag. Where did yours come from?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Got a nice white heavy canvas tote bag ten years ago as a gift. Unfortunately the way my monogram was put on it makes me look like a member of the NRA.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly I'm going to have to be the first person to mention Lloyd Cole.

the pinefox, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't have record bags when I was at school. But they did have records. One of life's little mysteries.

I imagine Lloyd Cole would have a stachel.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds like a kind of German rifle, or perhaps a Russian holiday home.

the pinefox, Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops! I forgot the Motorhead dot-dots over the 'a'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

alan, diesel ROCKS. i wuv that brand. almost as much - if not more than - miss sixty.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I long for a Diesel wristwatch.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Leather shoulder-slung briefcase w/expansion zipper & a nice amount of pockets. Only problem is the ball/socket joints for the strap wore out and I had to replace them with carabiners.

Also a standard padded blue Jansport backpack when I need more carrying load.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah reminds me that mandarina duck did some good bags a coupla years ago, slightly too italian if you know what i mean but they got it right a few times

diesel?!

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheap, black, canvas.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

My bags:

Black Kate Spade handbag with matching wallet - great because of the anti-mugger flap.
Patchwork cloth bag navy/grey/orange/red/brown/khaki bought for £3 at Holloway Road shop which colleagues always admire.
The Streets promo rucksack.
Gold rucksack for storing Grandmother's velvet bias-cut graduation dress.
Red patent Bloomingdale's handbag.
Black leather satchel with perfect A5 pocket for diaries, purchased on moving to London.
Adidas Sonar freebie as described by Ed upthread.
Astro Boy holographic print handbag.
Silver handbag with long chain from charity shop.
Dark green patent bag, very small, with silver clasps.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

today i am carrying a small brown purse that i got at h & m for nine dollars. it has one of those magento-snaps.

maura (maura), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i have one of those little cases about the size of a briefcase which is blue, you know the old fashioned ones with the bits of plastic covering the corners? yes, no? it was my 8th birthday pressie from mum and dad and i used to use it to carry piano sheet music around in but now its pretty much a handbag for the lady who likes to carry more stuff than will fit in a handbag eg wallet, day planner, diary, pencil case, sunglasses, reading glasses, you get the picture.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i never yet wore my elle bag to a fap

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have three bags - a blue sachel sort of thing with National Geographic on the side (my dad got it free with his subscription), a black backpack type thing with brown bits and my favourite, a wonderfully tacky white fake leather one with pink paisly on the inside and a singapore airlines sticker that I got from an op-shop for approx. 20 cents.

Livvie, Friday, 13 December 2002 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mandarina Duck did do some nice bags, although they were mighty pricey. I bought mine in Milan for about sixty quid, but it was three times that when I saw it in Urban Outfitters back home. I've still got it, but it feels kind of dated now.
