maura (maura), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

my, try, sky, crypt(s)

vowels aplenty: queueing

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

MYRRH!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The reason my mom always beats me is that she always does these things where she puts down 2 letters that spell like "EM" and "EN" and 3 other words that somehow add up to 60 points. So... EM and EN... I hate you!

Aaron W, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mr. perry, Y is a vowel!

"cwm" is a new one to me, is it welsh? is it in the OSD?

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

vowel friendly = miaou

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

pygmy (assuming 'y' doesn't count as a vowel)

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes EM and EN have vowels... God, I need to go home.

Aaron W, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Cyst, gym, hymn, myth and wynd (Scots lane) for starters - there are way more but this dictionary I've just looked in is tiny. 'Y' is only a vowel when it appears as the last letter in a word.

But I DON'T PLAY SCRABBLE. Ever.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Y is a vowel when it acts as a vowel - it's rarely a consonant other than when it starts a word.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

'Y' is only a vowel when it appears as the last letter in a word.

!?!?!?!

i would be willing to buy "last letter in a syllable" but fuck ef, even in syllable it is a vowel.

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a school of thought which also claims that "w" is a vowel under certain circumstances, like "cwm". I have never been enrolled in that particular school, however.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But by that logic, 'w' is a vowel in the word "cwm". STOP STEALING MY THUNDER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

not really, it's probably a welsh world thus:

#1 kooky
#2 an exception

thanks for playing!

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh baby baby it's a welsh world...

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

title of thread says scrabble. In scrabble y is always consonant. Yes, in real life it's mostly a vowel. But we're talking about scrabble.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

W is only a vowel in Welsh, where it is normally a vowel.

Waddaya mean, Y is a consonant in Scrabble? In what sense are any letters particularly consonants or vowels in Scrabble?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the name for those words like "hmm" and "er" and "oops" that aren't actually words? Don't they disallow those in Scrabble because it makes it too easy to come up with stuff?

webber (webber), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the only words that are disallowed are those not in the Official Scrabble Dictionary.

the regulation is based on usage, commonality, etc.

you'd be surprised some of the words that aren't in the scrabble dictionary (maybe just me)...

some of the words you may be thinking of are examples of onomotopeia (sp?)

gygax!, Friday, 13 December 2002 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

xyzzy

and most controversially of all pH (using the argument yes, it has an upper case letter but as it's the second letter it's allowed)

OSW says its ok. Most of my past opponents have disagreed.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the book 'word freak' has a lot of these scattered throughout its pages, and is also an excellent read

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Y is a consonant in Countdown and that is my guide on these matters.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

In that case, I nominate WHY.
