do you do pub quizzes and that? where?

we are supposed to be doing one at The Rosemary Branch but we havent got it together yet...

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlf does one sometimes, somewhere in North London. I keep promising to join her team sometime. We should have an ILX one sometime. Maybe I'll try to draft some questions, or maybe not. Actually, I am thinking that Pete has first dibs on this kind of thing...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit, i did a Pub Quiz thread about 2 months ago!

i was attending one at The Frog & Forget Me Not near Clapham Common for a while but not these days...shame...i like the idea of an ILM pub quiz - this probably happened already as well

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I randomly go to one at The Hogshead in Streatham. The music rounds are always a bastard as they always go for obscure stuff. And bad obscure stuff at that - good obscure I'd have a chance. When giving you the answers, the quizmeister has this annoying habit of giving an answer, pausing for a few seconds, and then saying 'was the most popular answer, it was in fact blah'.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 13 December 2002 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There can never be enough pub quiz threads.

I sometimes go to more than one a week. The regular one is the Oxford Mail Quiz League, which ensures my pic is in said local rag every few weeks. Last night my team, the Shelley Arms had a narrow victory (one point!) over the Wobbly Watermen. This is the question which we answered correctly to clinch it (modesty prevents me from saying who knew the answer):

Which country was formerly known as French Sudan?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It should have been called the Oxford Mali Quiz League, shouldn't it?

Thank you ladies and gentleman you've been a marvellous audience my name is Jess Conrad wrap up warm in This Pullover over Christmas park your sledges nicely goodnight.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 December 2002 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

now you're sounding like Dale Collins! Did you ever encounter the "miracle" that is Dale during your time in Oxford, Marcello? The man who can't decide whether he's a quizmaster or a DJ?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

we sadly/thankfully do not have any pubs in bruges.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you should come over specially, Nathalie!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yesyesyesyesyesYESYESYES COME OVER COME OVER SUPA DUPA FLY NIXED but not necessarily to a pub heheh ;-)

ah, dale collins. a spectre which haunts the farthest recesses of my oxford mind. he wasn't even good enough to get onto the oxford channel was he? (unlike danny cox, who makes all oxonian ladies faint, and bill heine, who just makes people faint, period). i have never knowingly listened to fox fm and its better muzik mix puke.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 December 2002 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Collins got a short-period license for a radio station in the Ridgeway area called (oh dear) Ridge FM!

his quizzes were peppered with snatches of theme tunes from Pot Black to Grandstand and we had to hand in our answer sheets to him as the Countdown music erm, counted down. Didda dida didda der der (dum!).

Still "wowing" the "punters" at the Fox & Hounds near Donny Bridge on Sunday evenings, I believed. His former haunt, the St.-Annes-stoodie-bar-staffed Horse & Jockey is being converted into flats as I type.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

They've got rid of the Whore & Seccy? They'll be converting Magdalen into flats next. Jebus.

lol p xx, Friday, 13 December 2002 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

we won on Wednesday! on a tie-break too, nice.

chris (chris), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No more Horse and Jockstrap? Ho hum, wasn't that nice a pub anyway. Now if they converted the Royal Oak into flats, headz would roll.

We won the (Approach, Bethnal Green) pub quiz jackpot on Tuesday, also on tie-break, down to the wire ect. Was only £44 (comparatively small total) between 4, but there is a glow associated with real money as opposed to bar tokens (which we also still have £10 worth of) that you get for just placing in the general quizzes. And I nicked the lovely Hoegaarden pint glass that the jackpot came in, which makes me feel like a child when I drink out of it due to its chunkiness.

Pub quizzes seem to pay for themselves, which is nice.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I did one in London most Wednesdays back in the summer, the first night I was there we won the beer, which was cool, instant effect. They're classic I think, once they don't go on too long and you can get locked while you're doing it. My brother often texts me questions on Wednesdays which is cheating I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, we got fifty quid between six of us, but that's the prize every week, except next week, when it's a ton!!

chris (chris), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a crate of Carlsberg Export in the Forest Gate, which was nice for as you're getting kicked out on a Wednesday. (presume you watched last night's thriller Chris?)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a few old pub quizes of mine way back in the archive - though we tend not to speak of my days running the SOAS quiz as the ILE team caused me no end of strife by continuing to win every week si that one week I had to fake them losing. Sarah got most upset.

Damn that Mike Jones and his brane of all knowledge.

These days a Columbian girl doed the SOAS quiz as I have to go to school that night.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I take it the Columbian girl doed the quiz because you bucked it?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

missed last night Ronan, I was in my penguin suit at works' very swanky xmas do.

chris (chris), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Just as well, it was a "drab affair" to say the least.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bucked it? Is that some obscure Glasgae phrase that I would not understand. No I would still do it (I enjoyed doing it) but I have to go to learn about silent filums and James Bond.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it was a stupid and overcomplicated game with letter substitution that didn't really work but I hit Submit before reconsidering.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

if it's stupid and overcomplicated games with letter substitution you want, there's a couple of Scrabble threads to look at.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I won vodka.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 December 2002 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I left with nothing.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You left with your pride intact

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They can't pull down the H&J! Not because I particularly liked it as a pub, just... er... *cough* yes. (They'll regret it when I'm hugely famous and they want to put a plaque on the outside saying that I met my first proper boyfriend there.)

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 16 December 2002 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I can read that Rebecca. Tra, la la who needs Dollond & Aitchison?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 16 December 2002 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I left with indigestion brought on by Baileys, Snowball, Long Vodka, strawberry bootlaces and pie.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There was no fucking pie.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have a single one of those fucking things. but I suppose I didn't have fucking indigestion either.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There was too pie. Chicken and ham fucking pie.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No more pub quizzes (with their attendant mountains o' grub) until the New Year for me, I'm afraid. Boo hoo, how will I cope??

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh yes, every Friday at this pub. My team is currently second in the league, right behind our arch-rivals.

Last year, we did a grand Tour de Quiz of five quizzes in five evenings, bettered a few weeks ago with seven quizzes in five evenings

All linked pages are in Norwegian, I'm afraid...

OleM (OleM), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i still havent done one but i am doign one tomorrow night somewhere near Goodge St!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder if they are becoming less popular now its easier to cheat with wireless Palm Pilots or mobile phones or whatever.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Weren't the Super Furries supposed to be titled their new album "text messaging is killing the art of the pub quiz"?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Another pub quiz, another win. What do you get the man who has everything?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

socks.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I so do need socks.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

this season, the Oxford Mail quiz is wide open. Anyone could clinch it. The Butchers Arms are far from their usual mighty selves and are being thrashed by their B team (the Butchers Legs!). In fact, the Legs beat us last week!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

We are going to a pub quiz tonight. The quizmaster's compilation tape that he plays between rounds is invariably made up of Belle and Sebastian and Northern Soul stuff, which kind of makes up for the fact that the questions are bastardly hard.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

we came 3rd and won a bottle of wine. it was fun, the one tun is a good pub, i am surprised it has not been suggested for faps before. we shamefully couldnt remember current footballer of the year, and went for raul instead of ronaldo, but never mind

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer to N.s question is Penicillin

chris (chris), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I rather like the One Tun (it gets a bit mediaey - cos CH4 is down the way - I saw Ricky Gervaise in there a while back). I have a vague memory that it might have been used for a small scale FAP some time ago. Tuesday night central London Quiz - hmm I've got an idea.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been going to the Black Horse on Rathbone place on Mondays. I think the best thing about it is that it's free, so you don't feel like such an ass if you do poorly. We won a few weeks ago and had £25 or so in free drinks. Yay!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Pub quizzes are significant source of income for me so always on the look out for ones - but only with cash prizes, it's not the taking part that counts it's the dosh

Dadrockismus (Dada), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Errrr...maybe. Karaoke you say?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Won in a landslide at Presidents' Day quiz. Our team was called Taft Punk.

They used one of my go-to questions: Which prez was born Leslie King Jr?

Going quizzing this evening...it's a ridiculous quiz with a "classic rock" music round worth as many points as all the other rounds combined, but it's good fun.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 July 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

we won! and it was just my friend steve and i, whereas nearly all the other teams had 4.

He's worked in cartography, so he came up with the names of the only two "double landlocked" nations on earth. (ie, you have to go through 2 bordering countries to get to water.)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

My wife, her coworker, and I won a global-affairs-themed pub quiz a couple weeks ago. Had a similar sense of pride b/c some of the teams we beat had four (or more).

The double-landlocked question is fascinating. I want to think about it.

I think Liechtenstein must be one of them.

central african republic is bordered by five countries that are each bordered by at least five countries though.

ledge, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

idk i knew uzbekistan already but took abt 15 seconds to suss liechtenstein

they would likely be either in central asia (furthest distance from oceans, large nations), central africa (distant from sea but smaller nations hence more borders) or european micronations

manticore values (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I guess that's it. But only if the Caspian Sea doesn't count.

Most mortifyingly, I missed the only baseball question of the night.

good work nakh

C.A.R. i meant

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

central africa (distant from sea but smaller nations hence more borders)

This was basically why I guessed Zimbabwe and C.A.R. -- but if my sense of African geography was better, I'd have realized they weren't it.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

for some reason i was talking about the central african republic, i was trying to remember which president it was who murdered schoolchildren who refused to purchase their uniforms from his own company

hey London! does anyone have a good quiz with lots of music questions that's on a Wednesday night? or, dream of dreams, a music-only quiz?

ͼѾͽ (sic), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 10:07 (eleven years ago)

I, too, am interested in knowing about this.

kate78, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago)

There's a film quiz tonight at the Boogaloo (they do a music quiz but not tonight :( ) but it apparently starts in 2 minutes

kinder, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago)

There's a purely music quiz at Aces and 8s in Tufnell Park on Tuesdays if that helps. It was a bit too hard for me when I did it.

this is for in a couple of weeks. I found a bunch of music-specific ones on Sundays and Mondays and Tuesdays, but this is planning in case a couple of people flying in on a Wednesday morning aren't too jetlagged.

This one on Wednesdays says It’s a quiz like no other! This unforgettable music quiz takes Jerusalem Bar & Kitchen by a storm! Make sure you head to Jerusalem Bar London on the last Wednesday of each month to take part. Check out our Events page for more information., but has no information at all on their events page.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 7 November 2013 03:12 (eleven years ago)

So my team, PT 109, won last night... I think we were one of the few to identify "Warmth of the Sun" in the audio round (which Brian Wilson wrote the day of the Kennedy shooting). Also had to identify actors and character names from pics of the cast of JFK and the Seinfeld "second spitter" episode. (obv as a Mets fan I could ID Roger McDowell)

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 November 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago)

Controversy ahoy in our local last weekend, as we lost by a point. One of the photos in the picture round was of Dustin Diamond, who played Screech in Saved by the Bell. We couldn't remember his name, so left it blank, then found out that the team that beat us had been given a point for writing Screech. The question was "name the actor", so we understandably didn't put down the character name, assuming that Screech was just going to be wrong because that wasn't the name of the actor. FFS.

ailsa, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago)

glaring gap in your team there ails

quizmaster at my fav quiz gave us a wee trophy last time we were there for winning so often

conrad, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago)

Not as bad as a few weeks before, when the question was "what sport do the Philadelpia Atoms play". We wrote down football and the lassie goes "the correct answer for two points is soccer but if you put football I gave you a point". WTF, did we MOVE COUNTRY? (also they don't even exist any more, and haven't for about 25 years, but whatevs)

We get booed and accused of cheating by jealous other teams because we win so often. I'd prefer a wee trophy :-(

ailsa, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago)

That Screech point is some BULLSHIT.

conrad, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago)

We don't really care because we have lots of lovely free booze and food and money and we know we're not cheating, and the folk who run the quiz know we're not cheating.

ailsa, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago)

yes that's a point - the pot at our quiz is never v large

ten years pass...

Thinking about ways I could get a bit of extra pocket money without having to work tremendously hard, I struck on the idea of running a pub quiz.

Anyone here got any experience of this? Is it even worth doing (assuming I can get heads through the door, which I assume is the hard bit)?

There's a big old pub near my house that is struggling to pull in the punters but would be a perfect place to hold it, and the landlord seems open to the idea.

So is this a foolish gambit, or could it be a bit of fun with nothing to lose?

Sade of the Del Amitri (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 13:25 (one year ago)

What rounds? Guess you have to know your punters a bit?

Classic - movies, intros (have a working sound system that you don't have to fiddle with), current affairs, picture round, etc
Dud - streams, lakes and waterways (one of the worst rounds I've endured)

I love a pub quiz but ime you need to be clear about any weird questions, how many rounds there are, when the breaks will be, who marks the papers, and what to do if someone's cheating on a phone. Also whether you'll accept EITHER "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101" OR "T-800" as an acceptable correct answer.

kinder, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 13:32 (one year ago)

Are you looking to write it yourself or buy in from an experienced company and just host it?

ailsa, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 13:38 (one year ago)

If doing it DIY, you need to think about how long it'll take to write, how much it'll cost to print answer sheets. Do you want to do picture rounds as that'll be a different set of colour pics each week rather than just blank paper or a plain-ish grid. What are the prizes and are the pub providing them, or are you, or are people paying an entry fee and that's the prize money? How much therefore are you invoicing the pub for each week, and does that cover paying someone to host if you're unavailable.

ailsa, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 13:47 (one year ago)

I would write it myself. I think it might be fun. I've got it in my head I'd like to make it a bit unusual rather than just the usual questions and answers. There are already a bunch of pub quizzes in the area, so making it a bit different might work. Plus the pub is big and kinda quiet but also on a main strip in the city - it might intrigue people enough to go.

I was thinking of doing things like having a round called "The Really F*cking Difficult Round" where correct answers are worth 5 points each, and then following it up with "The Really F*cking Easy Round", where you have to answer wrongly or you get 5 points deducted (or maybe wrong answers are worth minus points, I dunno, I'm still figuring it out).

I'm not good at sport knowledge, so rather than going around looking up sports trivia and potentially getting in arguments with people who know better, I was thinking of making it literally a sports round, like a mini-obstacle course, or a toy golf putting challenge taken on by a nominated team member (the pub is big enough to set something up like this).

Defo up for doing music rounds - I think the pub has a PA, I could bring my laptop to trigger sounds. I'd love to get a big screen up for visuals, but I don't think I have the tech.

Speaking to the pub, I suggested the prize would be something from the bar. But obviously it would need to be up to them to supply it and therefore worth their while.
I think about £2 per head tends to be the going rate, so I'd definitely want to make sure enough people turned up. I'd probably market it in a similar way to how I do my club nights: Give it an identity and try to build up some enthusiasm via Facebook/Insta/local events listings sites etc.

Sade of the Del Amitri (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 15:22 (one year ago)

All I know is my other half hosted a 'fun and quirky' pub quiz in lieu of a celebration party (friends only) and spent absolutely AGES thinking of rounds and perfecting the questions and ordering the props... Was fun though, had physical games type rounds. I've got a few ideas for rounds if you want - that may or may not work, ha. But I can see it becoming a time suck! OTOH over Covid we were making up our own quizzes to do over Zoom and once you get into the groove it was easy enough.

Just remember people are going to talk all over you when you're explaining 'wrong answers only' no matter how many times you explain it

kinder, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 15:31 (one year ago)

It's their loss! Mind you, I can be very loud on the mic - I don't intend to hold back.

Cheers kinder, if this comes to fruition I'll let you know

Sade of the Del Amitri (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 19:25 (one year ago)

I think it's a great idea, but yeah, probably a lot of advance preparation.. especially if you want to have current events from the last couple weeks
