it doesnt really matter where it is anymore perhaps, but do you really think it could have worked in Ireland and Scotland...how would it compare to Austria & Switzerland, bearing in mind teams would have to fly between the countries to play some games with the former - and are the grounds really big enough (Hampden, Lansdowne, Ayrsome, Ibrix...anything else over 20,000 even?!)?

why didnt Italy or Spain go for it? too costly?

do you think UEFA were remotely concerned about the potential problems of England playing in Ireland AND Scotland...is it/would it even be a problem by then?

Des is alles sowieso a Schmarrn. Pfiat Eich!

Bearing in mind the last World Cup, I don't think flying between countries is much of a problem. They'd have to do that in Switzerland and Austria (which must have smaller stadiums than Ibrox et al) as well, what with there being the small matter of a big mountain range in the way.

It's a shame, it would have been cool to qualify for Euro 2008, haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

thats no way to talk about Lord Lynam colin...

perhaps they will knock some Alps out of the way and build a nice new road for the teams

the daft thing is Austria and Switzerland are unlikely to qualify for Euro 2004 and probably wouldnt make the next one either - its going to really knock the seeding thing out, a lot more than having Belgium as a top seed did (France, Holland, Cezch Rep and Denmark all in the same group seemed crazy at the time) in 2000

Ronan i'm gutted cos i thought Ireland might finally be able to triumph in a group where they are no longer underdogs but favourites...i guess they'll always do better as the former though - that said i still think they can make the play-offs, where a tie with England, Scotland or Wales tantalisingly awaits...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

omg, just realised it is a SERIOUS possibility that England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland could all make the Euro 2004 play-offs!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

if so, bagsy the jocks i think

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

and by 'make the play-offs' i mean 'end up in by the skin of their teeth' of course

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ayrsome??

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ayrsome?? what do i mean - the Celtic ground...is it Parkhead now? god knows

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

parkhead, celtic park, whaever, man. ayresome was boro's ground before the riverside.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Smaller stadiums = restricted supply = higher prices as scarcity value is higher.

Lennert Johanssen (daveb), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a joint Scotland-Boro bid it might just have won through.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think Gatehead might have to have been brought in too.
