Search : Being a pain in Canada's ass, Montreal, hot-looking girls aplenty, local culture and superstars being completely unknown outside of the province, making the French language sound all grungy and dirty.

Destroy : Worship of beer and hockey, crappy music taste, ubiquitousness of Celine Dion, bad TV, 6-month winters.

Patrick, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Forget French - making an obscure 17th century dialect spoken by Breton fishermen sound grungy and dirty, that takes some doing.

Oh, and about those transfer payments...you're welcome!

dave q, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, that's 'Norman' not 'Breton' isn't it? Whatever, it certainly isn't Parisienne, or even Peter Sellers

dave q, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And the worship of beer and hockey is somehow *not* descriptive of Canada as a whole?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All the French Canadians I've met are great. And none of them say aboot either.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

zacko, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy: Poutine. I've never had it but the idea of gravy and cheese intermingling with chips is not a one that I find aesthetically pleasing.

Search: The crazy separatists in Infinite Jest.

I wouldnt search or destroy Hell's Angels or Rock Machine. Just stay far far away from them.

Very Far.

zacko, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First person I ever saw shoot heroin was a French-Canadian, he just did it right in front of me nonchalantly while talking and watching TV. I was 15 and shocked. He just laughed and said, "I work, up north, big pay, nuttin' else to do eh?"

zacko, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Voivod = grand, oh yes. We need more of that. And hell, saw Kid Koala the other night DJing before Radiohead, and the man was well on form.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well folks, I am a living in Que. Canada and there is no nicer place on earth. :) Not everyone is into beer and whatever. We are just the same as anyone else. We may have our faults but we are hospitable. I am English speaking as you can see. When I was in school, I pledged allegiance to the Union Jack. Go figure. I would love to visit other countries. Pehaps someday i will. Gale

Gale, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ostensive defn of Europeans = person doing something nihilistic for the benefit of an audience while pretending to be nonchalent.

maryann, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weren't Voivod from New Brunswick, not Quebec?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Brunswick? No, Voivod are as French-Canadian as pea soup and 'Headless Bodies in Topless Bars'. I think you're confusing them with Daniel Lanois.

dave q, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't there a large Francophone community in New Brunswick?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep

anthony, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Prog-rock is not only socially acceptable but celebrated. At least 2 shows of experimental music per week in Montreal (newsweeklies include an "actuelle" section in the listings). The fact that you can buy wine at corner stores (though consequently liquor stores are fewer and further between).

Destroy: The filthy take on French that is harder to follow for someone schooled in Ottawa than the speech of someone from fucking Europe. I'm not sure which category to place the downpour of beautiful women in.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All the quebecois I know are professionally beautiful so I assume qubec to be a land of beautiful people (albeit it the global fashonista style). However 2 out 3 quebecois (sample size 3) never carry their mobiles with them are unrelaibale and still have my suitcase

Ed, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Catherine, I really hate to burst your bubble but French is NOT better than English sorry. In fact today the french use many English words and being half French myself I find Quebec French is slang and not proper French. I'd be happy to say we are equal. Wouldn't you? Gale.

Gale Deslongchamps, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ouija, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can honestly say I'm not one for fries I like chips in a bag myself. lol Potatoes today aren't fit to eat anyway. :( It's time people started to smarten up! Soon nothing will be fit to eat since there are no good farmers anymore. :( Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooooohhhhhhhh my freaking gawd do I love real Poutine, cheese curds, grazy and pommes des frites. Of course to the Acadians, Poutine is something completely differnt, involving mashed potatoes, pork and boiling water but thats a different point.
and I love Quebec, except for the openly racist cops. They have the Fremont Bakery afterall and make the best bagels available. Plus the girls on Rue St Denis et St Catherine, oh la la.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello
I'm Audrée. I'm a Quebecer. I believe both french and English are very beautiful languages ! English seem simpler only because it as been simplified for business reason, but it is still a complexe langage. It is also true that 35 % of English is composed of French word, mostly from the Middles Ages : for example : toast, alien, remember barbecue.... Only 5 % of French is composed of English words. Simply because of the famous battles of Hasting and the few hundred years the Frenchman spended in England between 1066 en 1300. That's history. Shakespears still wrote beautifully. A plus !

Audrée
