Duh. BOTH! A good book whilst having a warm bath is the greatest thing in the word. Especially if you are topping up.

(A way of proving a book is good, reading in a hot bath and then noticing when you finish that it has gone ver ver cold).

After careful thought, I'd go for a book. You can't take a warm bath on a long plane, train, or car journey.

Give me a good book any day. Warm baths are kind of meh.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Warm baths are indeed meh. Hot baths are where it's at (especially with a good book).

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

but without housemates banging on the door busting for the loo.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A flatmate who works nights is helpful.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So employ your flatmate as a bath attendant.

A good book, any day, no contest.

smee (smee), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

since we have problems with water over here, anytime i can afford a hot bath without feeling guilty (that means way up north, not at home) i find it fantastic. besides, you can listen to music whilst you're at it.
maybe i would change my mind and choose the book if i was used to bathing regularly instead of shower.

Both have important roles in my life. But reading a good book in a warm (not too hot) bath is a delight and a total classic. Even more so if I also have a drink with me.

I like to read while bathing, but I also worry about keeping my hands dry and not actually getting any practical bathing done. Plus, I don't like being wrinkley and I don't like cold baths... So best scenario is hot bath followed by curling up in bed in cozy robe with a good book. But since we're choosing between the two.... ummm.... I think I'll go with hot bath. It's good for your soul and all that crap, especially with candles lit. If I'm feeling down, I don't feel like I can concentrate on anything, even a book. I require full-on pampering.

One thing I am very much looking forward to with my upcoming move is having a bathtub again as opposed to just a shower stall. Mmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

a warm bath + cartoon = classic

we have a whole collection at my parents house of cartoons with water damage.

with my living situtiation i have not been able to bathe in a while, i mean i shower but not bathe, so i miss baths, cause i cannot read in a shower.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not had a bath in a couple of years! I don't miss them in the slightest, and I never read in the bath even before I had a shower available.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 December 2002 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

baths are boring.

books are better, it's nice to be grubby and reading.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 December 2002 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Cold beer + Hot Shower = classic.

I always drop the book into the bath, so I don't try it anymore.

webcrack (music=crack), Saturday, 14 December 2002 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear you about the cold beer and hot shower thing, there just aren't enough hours in the day and if you've got to have a few beers before facing the world these things must be done. Classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Generally it's after facing the world all day, but I never properly considered the possibility of moving it up the schedule. Hmmm.....

webcrack (music=crack), Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa I sounded like such an alcoholic there, I meant before I go out at night, not first thing in the morning.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

In considering a winner in a contest between a good book and a warm bath, it is useful to appply the Universal Rock/Scissors/Paper Principle.

Viewed in this light, it becomes obvious that water (like scissors) conquers paper, in this case not by shredding it to confetti, but by reducing it to a soggy mass of blurry ink stains. Therefore, the bath wins.

On the other hand, if books were printed on enormous sheets of blotting paper, they might conceivably gain the upper hand in the future.
