long hair on boys: classic or dud

when I had hair, it was untameable, and if let grow long would turn into a whitefro. foolishly I used often let it do just that.

so for this boy, long hair = dud.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

do you have it like abel xavier now?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

How long is 'long'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, classic, classic... this thread is like the sideburns one for perving potential in me...

best = somewhere between ears and shoulders. bowlie, mop-top, pageboy, garagerock hair, yum. jawline hair w/fringe combination being most devastating. attractiveness goes down with ponytailability potential as hair creeps past the shoulders, but still can be quite lovely on the right person.

beware the white boy fro, though. this is clearly evil, but can be avoided by growing only the top, and keeping the back and sides fairly clean-cut, see jesus and mary chain circa 1985 for good curly hair management.

lovely, lovely long hair on boys.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh, Kate will never perv after me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I just perv after myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i've got great sideburns, but i'll never go long - my head is designed for bouffancy and to let it grow would result in a truly horrendous mullet that no amount of careful coiffering would amend

i am feeling very wordy today

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

my ex used to suffer from bouffancy if he washed, dried and combed his hair properly. so he stopped washing it more than once a week, and never actually brushed it, so it hung in lank, dirty dronerock longness around his face... uuuuhhhhh...

oh god, i'm perving. talk about long hair some more, please! and add some sideburns to the discussion!

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

long hair is actually not right.

[long=beyond shoulders].

RJG (RJG), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried to pursuade the boyfriend in the post above to grow sideburns, to complete the maximum-kate-attraction look, and he got very sniffy. raised the flaps of his hair to reveal these thin, whispy little strips of hair and complained that he had been growing his burns for YEARS and this was all that every resulted. aaaawwwwww...

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like short, but that kinda floppy long bangs almost hitting the chin is cute.

Genevieve, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Currently rather fancy a bloke with extremely long hair but this may just be because it makes him look like such a lovely girl... ahem!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm classic. Not to say I only like men with long hair, but there's something about a floppy fringe. Actually (incurs wrath of Kate)on some men the looser-curled end of white boy 'fro can be nice to push your fingers through. And proper afros look cute too. And I like peering from behind straight fringes. Or super-short hair with strokability factor. One boy had beautiful hair, about a foot and a half of glossy black waves, gave him a rather, ahem, primal quality. So I'm a hair slut. I appreciate men's hair. Good hair can maketh, if not man, then at least temporary crush.

I found out one of my male friends uses straighteners to achieve his carefully messy garage rock mop. He looked so ashamed when I found out I couldn't even bring myself to tease him.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

when I started shaving my hair, I found random girls I worked with used to stroke my head.

which was nice.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You have all just convinced me not to cut my hair. My hair is about shoulder length now and very curly and thick (kind of recent Ian Brown-ish). It looks great but it's a bit annoying to have so much.

Everyone knows that the way to avoid the fro is to use mildly heavy product (I like Material) and to only wash once a week.

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no shame in using straighteners. the great lost love of my life (c) used straighteners and a perm to tame his white boy fro into a garagerock pageboy. i saw photos of him in college looking like william reid and oh how i giggled...

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Long hair in three stages: classic. Other kinds of long hair: dud.

die9o (dhadis), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic on our Ned. Also classic on Karl Lagerfeld (possibly the only man living who can pull off a ponytail). Undecided on other male specimens.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the guy mentioned above (long black waves) could definately pull of a pony tail. Not something I ever thought I'd say, but there you go.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My famous ex-girlfriend tried to use straightener on my hair but it didn't work at all.

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My curls can't be tamed!

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I only found it funny because the friend in question wants to present an 'I'm too cool to care' image, but secretly does, massively. It was so him to use straigheners and then lie about it. It was quite endearing.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That's cute... but all people who are "too cool to care" actually care immensely.

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Super super super super super super super super super super super super super super DUD.

, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i am too cool to care.

i care immensely

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic on our Ned.

*blush* Aw, thanks. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah... I'm not too cool to care, I just care immensely.

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud on me, I turn into Moe Berg's double. Long blond streaky hair thats perfectly straight. Had it way past my shoulders in high school till Hanson hit it big. Then got a brush cut as soon as possible.`

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

DUD

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

especially if you need straighteners, in which case you are wasting far too much time on your hair.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

full disclosure: i did it in highschool

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

in my elementary school there was a kid named Jeff Lundy who got a perm.... he just showed up on the bus one day and his hair was totally curly!! we were like "wha...?"

(hello to Jeff Lundy's current/future wife btw if you've googled this.... mwahahahaha)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i have never encountered a boy with long and/or dirty and/or "i don't give a fuck" hair that did not spend HOURS trying to get it to look that way. this is what is so endearing about them! i don't think i've ever dated a boy who spent less time on his hair than me. i find it strangely appealing.

ok, i lie, i have, but it didn't last very long.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate's description of dirty-haired boys makes my heart flutter.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah, some day our bands should tour together, and we can be connaisseurs of dirty haired boy-groupies...

for some reason, tony robinson has long, dirty hair in this old, old episode of time team. i'm really disturbed...

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Now now that's not always true.

This picture isn't great (you can't really tell how long it is in the back) but it's from a couple months ago. And for the record, I spend about 5 seconds on it every morning (except when I wash it once a week and then I probably spend, eh, a couple minutes putting in product and combing cuz it gets in my eyes when it's wet). Notice how you can tell I slept on the right side cuz it's more matted down over there.

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

fortuantely now they have some her gel type products that let you get that "dirty/i don't care" look in mere seconds. guys who spend a lot of time on their hair may be endearing, but i hope for some chix at least those are the guys who they wouldn't end up dating for long.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well, they've actually made the products for along time, it's just that now they have hip brand names like bumble & bumble or fudge or whatnot instead of billantine or v05 hair dressing.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that look has always been a classic on this fella

http://www.saltspringmusic.com/artists/hooper/hooper.jpg

Kim (Kim), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm drunk, so this is going to come out wrong, but...

aaron, i like yer curls. they are wavy, rather than frizzy. OK, slightly disturbed by the vague resemblence to jim morrison in that photo. but this is GOOD handlage of curly hair without resorting to the white boy fro.

see? i'm NOT biased against the curly haired boys, really. i mean, if i ran into you in a club, i'd be hard pressed not to get in there and give it a good finger tousle... oh GOD, i'm perving, stop me!!!

g, i can tell the difference between real dirt and fake dirt, thank you. it's all in the smell when you get up close. fake dirty just SMELLS wrong, it smells clinical and vaguely floral. real dirty smells musky and male and pheremonal, and yummmmmm...

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.quicksilvershapeshifter.com/jonnymmm.jpg

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the fake dirt myself. Bathing isn't overrated.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate's making me blush.

Yeah, my hair was especially curly that day. For whatever reason. I guess I don't bother doing too much to it cuz it just does whatever it wants to.

I'm way too skinny to look like Morrison, but it's funny, the guy at Subway told me I looked like him a couple weeks ago.

Meh. I deserve a VERY HIGH in narcism from the personality test. I'm gonna go post pictures of myself in that other thread...

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hate it.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

aaron's hair = the new JULIAN CASACBLANCAS ASS!!!

fake dirt smells WAY better. sorry, forgot what country i was in, WELL better.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

but always thought that while short usually heart of hearts honestly looks better (snappier, more defined), longer is more enjoyable, for twirling, shaking, sculpting in front of a mirror, being comforting etc.
