Why the butt of so many jokes?

matthew james, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You mean other people make fun of us? I thought thats what we had 22 Minutes, Air Farce, SCTV and CODCO for.

Chalk it up to jealousy.

zacko, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are jokes about Austria? And surely Ireland / the Irish get more jokes than Wales / the Welsh?

Emma, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i remember telling Pete he looked like an Austrian. then he started doing that ape thing in the street, presumably Austrians don't do that

gareth, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Irish jokes are somewhat passé, though. Everyone loves the Irish now. Wales is definitely the new Ireland. Welsh jokes also passé, in my opinion.

Nick, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

with the irish its a slippery slope. the jokes stop, and the next thing you know its theme pub hell all around

gareth, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dean Swift lives and walks among us!! Coffee-spit o'the day, gareth... (tho the romans one also is still funny also...)

mark s, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does this mean we are due an onslaught of Welsh pubs? Shit.

Emma, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a Welsh-French restaurant in Stoke Newington that inexplicably remains in business. It must be a front for an antiques shop.

Nick, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The decor is, um, conflicted: the pun that the enterprise is based on is fugitive at best (french = gallic = pays de galles = welsh). But the food is good — in a Beef Wellington for breakfast kinda way – and also cheap, and you can always get in, unlike the Blue Legume next door. Because the people of SN are all massive snobs of one kind or another.

mark s, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Try talking to a german person picked at random. Two out of five will probably mock Austria. Despite it's major cultural conhtributions, freud, schwaznegger, hitler....

matthew james, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone once told me that I speak French like a Belgian, and he considered that a supreme insult. Which I suppose it is considering the one Belgian I know speaks English like he has down syndrome. And he listens to a lot of death metal. And has bad hair. As for Canada, they gave us Bryan Adams. No forgiving that.

Phil-Two, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But the last-named, along with Haider, is the foundation of much anti- Austrian prejudice, surely?

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who makes fun of Canada? Americans? That would be ironic.

I'm a snob before I even enter Stoke Newington. I'm not sure about this eatery though...

Ally C, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still cringe when I think of the movie Singles in which the band claims to be *big in Belgium*. Like we would buy their records! We are still recovering from the Singing Nun fad.

nathalie, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Belgium has been both highly receptive to cutting edge House and Techno, and has produced more than its fair share itself. 'Big in Belgium' is a compliment.

stevo, Saturday, 25 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Technotronic, 2 Unlimited (Belgian producer) and New Beat. Seriously, Stevo, you are right. We're still making some good techno _and_ there's a big techno scene here.

Honestly, after you see "Helaasheid der Dingen" (Misfortunates), you'll just cry. No more belgian jokes. Damn that movie has fucked me up (in a good way) for good. Such a fantastic movie. Nearly cried at one point.

Can't even finish the trailer without wanting to cry.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 13:05 (sixteen years ago)

complacency against the natural enemy in an election year, dangerous.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

Bill, I am pretty sure it is available with subtitles. Might not yet be on DVD for you guys though.
It's not as depressing as you would think. It's an ode to his (alcoholic) dad. Still it fucks you up because, like the main character says, anything beautiful is crushed. I recommend it highly. Very highly.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

I'll check it out - looks like there's a Belgian DVD with english subtitles, but at 20 Euros it's a bit steep for my wallet, will do a little t0rrent scouring instead...

Bill A, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe Thomas Bernhard was right about Austria...
