new Star Trek movie: classic or dud

Oh sure it had its problems, but I had a great time. And Shinzon was wikkid.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed it bunches. I've never really gotten far into the Trek serieses, but I've seen most of the movies and this one was certainly one of the better ones. Oh, and hooray for screwing with continuity since they'll never make another Next Gen movie!

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it's bollocks, but I'll see it anyway just in case*

*yeah I know that's dumb

DG (D_To_The_G), Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they ever explain how an android has developed a middle-aged paunch and crow's feet?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw it yesterday, enjoyed it. Basically KHAAAAN crossed with Generations, but it was a decent waste of time anyway.

J (Jay), Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Shinzon, like I muttered elsewhere, was a great character -- the fella what played him did a fine job, the more so because the combination of look, costume and attitude made him seem like the chief Cenobite only without the pins. This is manifestly a good thing.

I liked it, though I think it's a very contemplative film in ways, one that spends its first hour building up things on a subtle level (the initial romp around that one planet on the semi-dune buggy) notwithstanding. I can see why some critics call it slow and dull for that reason, but on the flip side it's very character oriented, and when the tension starts ratcheting up in the extended battle sequence, it's handled very well.

Also -- staying non-spoiler here -- I didn't think it would end the way it did, and while the franchise has given itself an out, I appreciated the fact that this was made to be a final wrap up indeed of this particular series/group of actors. It works well, and I'll probably enjoy future viewings as they happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Between First Contact and Insurrection, how does it rate? (FC being for me the high water mark of TNG movies, and Insurrection being the ultimate nadir -- albeit with one heartstopping scene.) Also rate Patrick Stewart please.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 15 December 2002 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, which scene? (Agreed that it's the least compelling of the previous three films.) I would place it in the middle but leaning more towards FC's quality if not its breathless pace and focus. Patrick's as on the ball as always but the feller playing Shinzon (checks...a Tom Hardy, English actor) is more compelling in comparison, a good development out of the nature of the character. When the two work together directly, though, it's a good spark they've got going.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

When Picard and what'sherDonnaMurphyface are sitting by the waterfall and she stops time. Gave me shivers.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 15 December 2002 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Shinzon look like young Dr. Evil in that ridiculous Issey Miyake thing that Aphex Twin used to wear? In fact, I swear the costumes were ripped straight from that movie "Dark City" with Kiefer.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

But that was part of the appeal! We need more of that in the Trek universe, the Borg are not enough (imagine if Cronenberg had directed First Contact).

Hm, the stop time moment I don't immediately recall. Might actually have to rewatch it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't do it, Ned! I actually tried to re-watch that one again recently to see if I had actually missed some of its appeal, but in the end it's probably actually worse than Star Trek V.

I liked the new one just fine. As usual, some plot holes you could drive a starship through, but whatever. Fun escapism, I guess.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

in the end it's probably actually worse than Star Trek V

Bold words! But I admit I shall not test my counterassertion anytime soon. ;-)

Occurred to me that I didn't know who actually wrote this particular episode -- I see it's John Logan, a friend of Brent Spiner (who contributed to the story along with head Trek honcho Rick Berman) and the first person outside the general Trek extended family to pen one of the movies in a long while. Given some of his recent credits -- Any Given Sunday, Gladiator, The Time Machine -- I have to say I'm pleased it turned out as much of an on-form Trek effort as it did; I could have easily seen this as a Ron Moore/Brannon Braga collaboration. (Insurrection came from Michael Piller so if you want to blame anyone...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Piller ruined Voyager! (Assuming of course that Voyager was quality enough to begin with.)
