Is this the I-R-A? I thought it was the UK...

I'm trying to research what's been going on with Ireland in the last year or so, and I'm finding it an insanely difficult task. Extreme information overload, hundreds of possible articles to sort through, and I only have 24 hours to sort it all out and finish writing my paper. (I'm not complaining: this is just business as usual for us easily-distracted ILX students. Hope you finished yr paper alright V.)

Could someone direct me to a site that might be helpful?

(If anyone wants to get into a big screaming debate about Northern Ireland, that would be great too, but I won't push it.)

Playing "Alternative Ulster" at full volume on repeat is somehow not as inspiring as it should be.

CAIN Web Service Conflict Archive on the Internet, excellent source for background info.

Newshound N.Ireland Newslinks

Reluctant to link to various political and paramilitary sites, for obvious reasons, but plenty exist.

You won't get through it in 24 hours Justyn but for anyone interested I thoroughly recommend Ed Moloney's recently published A Secret History of the IRA. Lifts the lid on the Provos, Sinn Fein and their gradual movement towards ending armed struggle. An excellent read.

you will not absorb the information in time.

The Vicar has spoken.

Is the pinefox related to the Border Fox?

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

no, but he is a good friend of the semi-urban fox

Who's the Border Fox?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

border fox = dessie o'hare, (ex?) INLA member who was put away for kidnapping a dublin dentist about 15 years ago. he is shortly to be released from prison under the terms of the good friday agreement.

he is not really a fox.

rener (rener), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he even good-looking?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

can't remember, n, but i think the general rule is paramilitaries = mingers. that's why they're so big into disfiguring perfectly nice-looking people, see? they're JEALOUS.

rener (rener), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think paramilitaries had parachute packs on their backs.

I used to think guerillas were gorillas.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think gorillas were men in monkey suits.

Dessie "The Border Fox" O'Hare is actually IRA, Rener.

He busted out of jail around a time everyone was going on about Dominic "Mad Dog" McGlinchy (who was INLA), and there was a lot of talk about how the two of them might get together for canine animal action.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My ex's ex was, erm, involved. Not a bad looking bloke, the politics were ugly though.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Border Fox is seeking release under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. His appeal began in 2000. The release is not necessarily going to happen any time soon but he has recently been moved from a high security prison.

He cut off two of John O'Grady's fingers off with a chisel and a hammer.

I am sorry for suggesting that there might be a relation between him and the Pinefox. From what I read, the Pinefox would not be so unkind.

Actually, I did alright. I just concentrated on the background and major names/events and kind of glossed over the recent stuff. Thanks for the links, stevo.
