I mostly rent at a local store within walking distance to my house. But if I actually wanna see a big budget film I sometimes have to go to BLockbuster because I know they'll have a million copies of it.

Frank J. Biondi, Jr. was the President and CEO of Viacom from 1987 to 1996, and was the Chairman and CEO of Universal Studios from 1996 to 1998. Currently, Biondi is the director of Amgen, Cablevision, Harrah's Entertainment, Hasbro, Yahoo, and Seagate.
Sumner Redstone, Viacom's chairman at the time, is still worth about $2 billion.

looking at the 8 year old orig. post, I mean while I think whining that Blockbuster had to look you up cuz you didn't have your membership card (ya know, which you're supposed to bring) is lame, that an employee has no business eavesdropping and telling you essentially that you have no right to criticize his store. I'm not exactly thick-skinned and yet I never lipped off like that to far worse comments that were to my face!
― funky brewster (San Te), Friday, 27 August 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

i keep waiting for the blockbuster (aka 'cockthruster') here to die but it still seems to be going, despite a way better and cheaper mom-and-pop store across the street and a red box in the grocery store right next to it.
― joygoat, Friday, 27 August 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)
blockbuster (aka 'cockthruster')
that's a different thing.
― Mark G, Friday, 27 August 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)
In my experience, the only blockbusters that had Last Temptation of Christ were ones that had bought out an independent store and took its stock.
Grew up going to Blockbuster, and I still like the tactile sense of going in and browsing for a movie to have on the night (the problem with netflix or lovefilm for me is that sometimes I'm in the mood for something particular right then, not a day or two away, but that's minor complaint), but I've not actually been to one in a few years and it is time to put it to bed.
― a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Friday, 27 August 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
The worst thing about Blockbuster was how they'd send you to collections so fast for even the tiniest amount of late fees.
― sharkless dick stick (Abbbottt), Saturday, 28 August 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)
los angeles has a couple of fantastic rental stores that are doing well. the only time i went to blockbuster was when i couldn't find a copy of 'rapid fire' starring brandon lee and for some reason they were the only ones nearby who had it on short notice. anyway, r.i.p. blockbuster. r.i.p. brandon lee, too.

Yep. I'll miss the foreign film tokenism too. Six copies of Jules et Jim, Manon of the Spring, My Father's Castle, Cyrano de Bergerac, Kolya...

My last time at a Blockbuster was in spring '09 -- I wanted a copy of "The Wire: Season Four." It felt great to say, "I want it NOW" and to drive to the one five minutes away.

I forgot to mention that working at a non-Blockbuster video store is pretty much the best crappy job ever.

the independent place I grew up going to, the one that always got a ton of business even with a Blockbuster across the street (it had a bigger selection, esp foreign stuff as it was run by an Indian family, plus rentals were 1/2 the price and if they knew you were a reg customer they'd usu waive late fees w/in a day or two) recently closed down :(

like I said before, we are doing OK. We had to move to a pretty crap location thanks to our building changing hands, but all things considered we're surviving. we've been around for about 20 yrs and we have a really good selection. and pr0n. all of these things help. (if you think renting physical movies is becoming an anachronism, you'd be shocked at the number of people who shell out for DVD pr0n.) xxp

one time (before the late fee rule changed) I got charged $6 in late fees for 3 games, amounting to $20. This was amusing to me since I'd returned all three games on time.
Being that I'm meticulous about attention to detail, I looked at the card I got in the mail that describes my infraction, and the due date these geniuses listed for the game was exactly one day BEFORE I rented the games. Now that's funny.
That was back before I went through my consumer advocate phase so I paid it (I was in high school, I didn't know no better)....

i have one at the convenience store that's on the corner of my property. it's great if you wanna see a new release...pick it up, watch it, walk back to the convenience store, one dollar.
if you wanna see something more obscure, then it sucks! but that's not what ti is intended for

― joygoat, Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)
Hilarious, that happened to me a few times. Then you make copies of everything and they are still a bitch about it. Like, they'll still collect even when their paperwork is wrong.
― i just like barbecue rib, whatever (u s steel), Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)
redbox is awesome. i didn't try them for a while figuring they had to be a hassle, but they'r so easy. swipe a card, pick a movie, dollar a night, love it.
― Kerm, Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
weird, the redboxes i've seen always seem to be stocked entirely with straight-to-video releases (or movies sufficiently unsuccessful that they might as well be straight-to-video.) I assumed they were some attempt to monetize worthless dvd overstock rather than an actual business model.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 29 August 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)
well there IS a lot of that in there, but they have major a-list dvds, ie, they had KickAss the day it came out and stuff.
― funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)
the redboxes near me are pretty good about stocking the bigger "indie" releases -- a single man, moon, even derrick comedy's mystery team. they also randomly had the "final broadway show" recording of rent that came out a few years back.
― it sucks and you all love something that sucks (reddening), Sunday, 29 August 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i love looking at the front of the redbox just to contemplate some alternate universe where people are clamoring for a movie about sharks that only talk to cuba gooding jr. or where steven segal and wesley snipes are both yakuza members

blockbuster 'rewards' program was a godsend for the couple of years i worked a graveyard shift (2000)(at one point my off nights were like tuesday and wednesday, so boring AND i couldnt hang out on the weekends), i would rent 3 or 4 movies a night and it worked out to no more than a buck a movie (mostly vhs, the dvd rental prices were always a nonstarter and probably why i stopped going but the rewards thing gave you a new rental on either format after every 3 rentals so it worked out really well for a while) and the (3) stores in my town are pretty good on classic/foreign etc. though it was thinning out after two years of power moviewatching. lost my card prob 5 years ago and got netflix anyway i think all those bb stores are still open here, still never seen/noticed a redbox.

― funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 13:10 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, this. One opened by the house in '96, and was a godsend until it closed in 2004. Its classic and foreign film selection put Blockbuster to shame. I watched lots of RKO films that didn't come back in print until a couple of years ago: Sylvia Scarlet, Hands Across The Table, etc.
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 August 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)
LOL re: Last Temptation of Christ. Our last BB lost it's lease and is liquidating. I picked up their LTOC for $8. While I was being rung up, two people called asking if they still had LTOC. Score! In exc. condition for an ex-rental, too. Only other Crit I saw in stock was The Life Aquatic. Pickings were pretty woeful. Maybe because I'd already bought up most of their TLA and Kino titles when they hit the $3.99 bin. Might go back one last time for Silent Light and their IFC exclusives, like Summer Hours and Puffball: The Devil's Eyeball. Anyone need a copy of the non-Crit Gommora? Or Targets? saw at least six copies of that one - totally OOP, I think.
― babytown frolics (Mr. Hal Jam), Sunday, 29 August 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

I'll miss wandering through a blockbuster for half an hour with a friend, looking for something we both might enjoy, making snide comments (mini-reviews?) about every other movie we see on the shelf, and then, because we couldn't find anything that was both new and enticing to us, settling on some nostalgic classic to rent that we wouldn't watch.
