crazy ways to avoid jetlag

i got up at 4:20 am! didn't plan to in advance (indeed didn't go to bed til near midnight), but there was a car alarm going off and i was like "hmm, if i get up this early every day i can get back to uk time before i leave and avoid jetlag". is this mentalism or genius? and what are your tips for avoiding jetlag?

My main one is NO NAPS once you arrive at your destination. US to UK flight times generally mirror a night of bad sleep as one tends to arrive in UK before 9am. Whatever you do, don't take a nap once you get back, and try to go to bed at a normal school-night time to ensure a proper wake-up next morning.

UK to US: same rules apply, because you fly from UK early afternoon and reach your destination at the 'same' time, seven or so hours later. Keep awake, but don't exert self too much and go to sleep at midnight or so.

Fists of toes. Though it means that later when you are fighting international terrorists (or actually common thieves (or actually "Exceptional thieves Mr McClane)) when they shoot out some glass your feet is going to hurts for a while.

according to my mother there is no such thing as jetlag. hah! this means that when you are traveling with her, you are NOT to enter the hotel room, jump on the bed and... sleep (like a sane person would do, I s'pose). I don't suffer from jetlag when arriving but when I come back home I feel extremely tired and sometimes even sick.

Last time I arrived in new york I had expresso before getting the subway into town, a couple of large cokes and a couple of pots of expresso when I go to where I was staying. A couple of big gins before going out. Stayed out till 5 ending up in a diner somewhere for soothing peppermint tea followed. Home bed up at about 9:30 for a normal day.

Britain to the US produces manageable jet-lag: lots of coffee, lots of alcohol, bed at midnight, nice early morning. But the return journey is a killer. Landing at 7.30am, you feel like you've missed about two night's sleep, and I know of no remedy that can stop your next few days from being confused and tired and shitty. I am not drinking my own urine, though.

You have made a rod for your own back.

I found it far easier to do the US-UK direction than UK-US but nobody else seems to agree with me. I find having no caffeine whatsoever from the moment you set foot on the plane until you go to bed that night (and not taking any naps before you go to bed) helps.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i always find the US-UK journey the nightmare. i'm particularly dreading it this time as i have to catch a flight to france two days later which is going to involve getting up at 4:30am or so, and i've got two nights of heavy drinking lined up already. still, i'm young, my body'll cope...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

flying is like drugs (hahaha, yes, but not like that silly!) you just got to keep going when the comedown hits...or you land. last zear, coming back from new york, i landed at 7am and went straight to work, i didnt sleep on the flight, just kept rollnig after i landed.

side question...do clubbers have less of a prob with jet lag?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always just put off a night's sleep until it gets to an early but reasonable sleep time, say 10 or 11 at night, then I let myself sleep a bit extra, but again get up at a reasonablish time, mayeb 10am. After that, I'm okay.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

US-UK is far easier than UK-US, I think simply because the fight is at night and you can sleep a little (unless some boreish australian twat stands in the gangway in front of you the entire flight drinking an spouting CRAP the whole way from JFK to LHR). It just feels like a bad night's sleep rather than a 36 hour day.

Ed (dali), Monday, 16 December 2002 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I think UK to US is the easiest; the other way, you arrive in the morning & have to slog through a whole day, instead of only an afternoon! The key either way for me is just to force myself to stay awake until after dinner when I arrive, by drinking loads of coffee & staying far away from beds, comfy sofas, and anything you could lie down on.

alas no weed for me: pregnant and in japan in two days. *sigh* also, jetlag possibly worsened cause of ophelia refusing to sleep on plane and instead walk around and play with me.

nathalie, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

Man those urine people're so eager to get other people doing it, they'll say it cures cancer next (actually I think there are claims it reduces antioxidants or something)
