Does Human Nature exist?

Are we really governed by instinct or are we more thought/rational based creatures who can decide what we want to be?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If our behavior is based on thought and reason, wouldn't that be a sort of human nature?

Lyra, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm just waiting for the right point at which to post "There's something wrong with HUMAN NATURE!"

My general opinion: human nature = valid concept / human nature as excuse for things = monstrous dud.

Nick, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess what I am asking is do we have any justification in saying things like " Its the males' nature to want to be on top" ? Are we like animals at all or are we more like computers? Can we be whatever we want or is there some point at which we have to blame nature?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, people are animals. They do have natural instincts and stuff. But they also have minds and should be able to control base instincts and do what they need to do.

Ally, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think humans have instinct per se. I think we are just taught t think that way.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why?

Ally, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Instinct is like " I feel for some reason like building a nest" not " I feel liek for some reason I want to be with that girl"

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We have done this topic before. People like Josh K said wise things. I cannot point you towards it, for the usual reasons.

Instinct is like finding a dry place when you're wet or crying when you're sad. You can avoid these, but it takes more effort to stop than to act, so you're going against your instinct.

Lyra, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we find it funny = we smile = instinct
we find it funny = we frown = against instinct
we watch nash bridges = we smile = culture

mark s, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, I want to go make a nest now. That's a great idea.

Ally, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pad your nest with pasrty shell, TART.

It is my belief that the subject on human nature is a very tricky one that shouldn't be taken light-heartedly. Firstly, what is human nature? This complex question has no wrong answer, but has no one correct answer either. It is my view that human nature is something we learn whilst we grow up, meaning that it is socially constructed, which in turn means that human nature definately exists and I'll prove anyone wrong if they care to e-mail on the address shown. Thank you for your time.

Is David's post a satire on high school essays?

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't really see a difference between wanting to build a nest and wanting to be with a girl. Why is one an instinct and one not?

Sam, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is nick really so sad that he read all that i said? Twat.

David Allan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, it was only 4 and half lines. I'm a quick reader!

Nick, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You even counted the lines? So sad.

David Allan, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to my health teacher, the only "real" human instinct is sucking. And there are many opinions on this subject that may or may not be correct....

M, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, this 'sad' thing could run and run!

Nick, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my answer was best but no one noticed

mark s, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't really understand it. Could you elaborate?

Nick, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh nicky boy, is there anything you can understand in this world? Sad gimp.

David Allan, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Univeral Human Nature = comforting myth. It's a way of denying cultural/induvidual difference. People are different: differences in history make us different. Denial of history by culture which attempts to make itself appear natural = ideology = don't trust it!!

I disagree. "Asparagus" would definitely be the wrong answer.
